## SetupI own the 1st generation of the Nanoleaf Aurora panels and aside from some occasional WiFi disconnects, I've been very pleased with them. The newer version (now referred to as Nanoleaf Shapes), gives you more flexibility on how you create your "layout" of panels. Each side of the triangle now has two connector slots (previously, there was only 1 connector in the middle of each side), allowing you to stagger the panels more and also connect some of the other "shapes" such as the hexagon and the mini-triangles.You can use the app to layout the panels first or use it to "shuffle" through different designs if you need some inspiration. This makes it much easier to remove the panels from the wall if you were to move. The unit is compatible with Apple's HomeKit which allows you to access some of the functions from the Apple Home app. HomeKit also makes setup a breeze and your iPhone can transfer your WiFi information automatically to the Nanoleaf unit.## DesignThe panels can get very bright and I typically have the brightness set below 30% so that it provides a comfortable glow. I really like the ambiance the lights give off: it adds a modern look and a splash of color to any space. I don't recommend placing them in the bedroom as any type of power interruption causes them to come on at full brightness when it boots up.The app comes with several built-in "scenes" that provide both soothing animations as well as "flashy" effects for parties. You can adjust the colors used in the animations and create many other customizations in the app. For example, you could create a relaxing flicker similar to a fire or some colorful strobe lights to celebrate. I could spend hours playing around with the available options in the app.You can also use the app to select a scene that responds to music, which creates a cool effect for parties or for when you're just relaxing with some tunes.## SummaryOverall, the Nanoleaf lights look awesome whether you need a cool background for your YouTube channel or if you simply want to add some ambiance to any room. The app can be a little overwhelming at first with the many available options and can take some time to understand, but you can create some really cool designs with some patience.

There is no doubt that these lights are cooler than having standard LED light strips. They create kind of like an art piece that you can adjust by an app, change by the little control panel or simply by touching and swiping depending on what gestures you may set up. They are bright and colorful, providing practically every done of color you can imagine. They will certainly catch the eye of anyone that sees them for the first time. The install is fairly simple and guided through the app, but requires some planning. Be sure to get an idea of the pattern that you want. The app has a AR tool that lets you visualize the design, but I couldn’t get it off of the hexagons and the AR portion only worked for a brief moment. Be sure to get an idea of the pattern that you want. The app has a AR tool that lets you visualize the design, but I couldn’t get it off of the hexagons and the AR portion only worked for a brief moment. So, I just went analog and laid it out on a flat surface with a concept that was inspired from the little included pamphlet. The instructions say multiple times not to install on textured surfaces because it is only using double sided sticky pads for install. However, I have a fish scale style texture on my walls and it is holding really well. Even popped the panels off of the bracket a couple times to attach the connectors. The odd thing is though, they have 2 holes in each bracket but never mention if there is an option to use screws. Considering the way these are installed, there isn’t much option for adjusting them unless you get some extra double sided squares. The kit connects to 2.4 Ghz networks but the app works on your local network only. So, if you are not at home connected to your WiFi, you can’t change the lights through the app. You can use the default light patterns, customize the pattern yourself or download from many others that have been shared. You can have steady lights, changing lights, music reactive lights and even play some touch games like memory and simon. You can also set it to work with other smart devices like Google and Alexa.Overall it is a different twist from typical lighting. It can be fun and interactive or just be a glowing source of light. It is certainly something I wish I had more panels for that wouldn’t break the bank and cover a whole wall with the three different shapes available.
LED mood lighting is all the rage these days, from the LED light strips popular with TikTokers to the full range of LED lightbulbs integrated into the modern smart home. I have long used “smart” LED bulbs in my light fixtures to enable dimming, but these are simple white bulbs, no color. Having tried a few multicolor light bulbs I came away unimpressed, not seeing the practical use beyond a fun party trick. Now having tried the Nanoleaf Shapes, I am converted. These multicolor LED panels are possibly the most fun I’ve had with lighting in a long time, and are well-worth the investment for a few reasons.First, the ease of use: installing Nanoleaf is more complex than screwing in a lightbulb, but surprisingly easy for something so flexible. These multicolor LED panels are possibly the most fun I’ve had with lighting in a long time, and are well-worth the investment for a few reasons.First, the ease of use: installing Nanoleaf is more complex than screwing in a lightbulb, but surprisingly easy for something so flexible. The Nanoleaf app guides you through the process, offering the critical layout exploring tool that gives you the ability to preview your chosen Nanoleaf layout on your phone and, if you’ve a compatible smartphone, on your wall in AR. This worked particularly well for me on my newer iPad Pro with LIDAR sensor, which was able to quickly display a layout on the wall. I was able to get a layout preview on my older iPhone as well, though it took more finagling. After choosing a layout and a location on the wall, you attach double-sided sticky pads to each shape, snap in the connector pieces, and start placing them on the wall. I learned right away it’s critical to make sure you attach the connector pieces properly before attaching each shape to the wall, but thankfully the mounting plates on the back of each shape snap on and off so if you forget, you can snap a piece off the wall without removing the adhesive. Once I’d decided on my layout the Shapes were installed on my wall in a matter of minutes.Plugging in the Shapes and syncing them with the Nanoleaf app was a cinch, very straightforward and without any hiccups (not always the case for smart home gadgets). Nanoleaf integrated right away with Siri and HomeKit, and with a few clicks was linked to my Google Home as well.Nanoleaf includes a variety of pre-made scenes in the app to get you started with Shapes. You simply click on a scene and it starts playing on your Nanoleaf setup immediately. Scenes include rotating colors designed to mimic nature, as well as feelings like calm or active. My personal favorite is the “Cocoa Beach” scene, which rotates through soothing pastels and creates a nice ambiance in my living room. The most fun - and certainly the reason to invest in Nanoleaf - comes from the rhythm scenes. These scenes use a built in microphone to respond to music playing on a nearby device, and wow is it ever fun. Set your Shapes to a rhythm scene and play some tunes and instantly your room is a dance party! Not gonna lie, after installing my Shapes and starting a rhythm scene my friend and I spent the next few hours completely entertained by the Nanoleaf dancing to the music. The microphone is sensitive enough to pick up regular conversation, meaning you don’t have to blast your music to make it work. This is a great feature for anyone living in an apartment like myself.Furthering the fun, Nanoleaf panels are touch-sensitive, with scenes that respond to touch and the ability to assign actions to certain gestures. Because my Nanoleaf is above my TV I have not been making full use of the touch gestures, but I can see this being a very useful feature if your Nanoleaf is located within easy reach. The ability to trigger HomeKit actions with the Nanoleaf is awesome and I can think of numerous uses if your Nanoleaf is located near a door or in a well-traveled room in your home.Add on top of all this the ability to not only create your own custom scenes, but to download thousands of scenes made by Nanoleaf and Nanoleaf users in the “discover” tab of the app. It took me a few hours of playing around to land on this section, and wow, are there ever a ton of options. I of course downloaded a Christmas lights scene straightaway and now I have Christmas lights up without even trying. Truly, the possibilities are endless. In terms of lighting utility, I was pleasantly surprised to find the Nanoleaf is bright - bright enough to illuminate my entire living room with color on full blast. I have been keeping it dimmed to around 50%, which provides plenty of ambiance without blinding. I was able to watch multiple hours of TV at night with Nanoleaf playing happily in the background above my TV. Certainly if you install your Shapes near a chair or bed they would provide plenty of light for reading, with the brightness and color completely within your control.Overall, I am very pleased with Nanoleaf Shapes. I knew they would be fun, but I’m impressed with how much utility they provide, and how well-developed and integrated the ecosystem is. Installation and use couldn’t be easier, and while the app is a tad overwhelming at first (so, so many choices), it’s easy to figure out. Voice control works well, and integration with the rest of my smart home devices was seamless. Friends who have seen my Shapes are already looking at purchasing their own, and I have to say, I can’t wait to get another set for other rooms.
The Nanoleaf shapes are a fun way to bring light and style to a room. I have installed these in one of the kid's bedrooms to act as a nightlight and to help him wind down at the end of the day. Of course he much prefers to pair them to his music and put on a full house light and sound show.In the box are the panels, connectors, controller, cord and instructions. Physical set up is super easy, attach adhesive and place on wall to make up whatever design you want, providing at least one side of each panel is touching. The wall must be smooth, and I had no issues with the panels staying put once adhered. The connectors have two spots on each panel to connect with, and only one connector is required, allowing for many different designs. If you do not have a dedicated 2.4 GHz connection, you must configure your router. This was the frustrating part of the process and the reason for 4 stars versus 5 due to the lack of flexibility or setup assistance to auto-select the connection. However, once I configured a 2.4 GHz connection and paired with an Android tablet everything worked seamlessly. The panels work with Amazon Alexa, which is easy to pair, however I haven't figured out much functionality other than remotely turning on and off the lights with Alexa. The features are nice, there is both a touch feature as well as a music feature shown in attached photos. The app allows for prebuilt and user submitted color themes, or you can build your own. The app recognizes the wall design upon pairing, so all lights fade and move as expected without user editing. I also like the fade feature, you can control the LED brightness allowing for low ambient light or sun rise effect. Overall a really neat techie light show without any coding or excessive user input to control. I recommend as a unique gift or a great way to add a unique light style to any room.
The lights are gorgeous and the touch panel works well but the connectors between the panels are super flimsy. On top of that, I bought two starter sets on sale for $100 each, but the power brick decided to just die on one of them after two weeks of operation. The app is also buggy, and firmware updates seem to take ages (like over ten minutes for some lights??). The wizard color feature is cool, but nanoleaf leaves a lot to be desired when competitors like govee are coming out with less flimsy feeling products that also look great and have better app support. They also do a terrible job of sticking to the wall when using the included pads, even after prepping and cleaning the wall first too.
Mesmerizing. These Nano shapes have so much potential for fun uses. They can be programed to touch or to be sound sensitive. And the colors used as time passes/music is played has endless possibilities. From the NanoLeaf app you can choose from hundreds (maybe thousands) of pre-programed sequences. I put this starter collection under my living room sound bar, I wanted to see how it responded to music/TV audio. I had no idea my wife would love it, she thinks it's entertaining, and it can be easily be disabled via the app or via voice using Alexa/Google. It is also part of apple home kit automation (so it can also accessed via Alexa/Google); event changing the selected scene (the color pattern currently in use), and you can use the automation part to changed the scene ... MoreMesmerizing. The panels need to be connected to the adjacent panel via simple snap in place connector (provided), there are 2 connectors per flat side (only one needs to be used). On the back of each panel in the center there is push on/off plastic wheel that via double sticky foam can be attached to any flat surface. They claim the foam can be removed easily, I haven't tested that, but I'm sure double sticky silicon tape (Alien Tape) would also do the trick (and it can support several lbs).Nanoleaf makes several other shapes (squares, small and large hexagons, and a smaller triangle) which can be connected to this set or used independently. That also have multiple type of connectors that bend or connect via wires so you can create patterns that are 3 dimensional, not just flat, they can go around corners etc. They also have a handheld remote, but you smart phone provides plenty of control. In the series of images below I was playing Christmas music to a Christmas pattern (predominantly red, white and green (and shades in between)). If my wife lets me, I plan to wrap a corner of my office with these (and some more). A couple of notes, the controller uses wi-fi for communications, at only 2.4ghz I had some difficulty getting mine set up, I had to reset controller to the factory defaults (hold in the on/off button while plugging in) several times before it was properly programed. There is a lot of good information on the Nanoleaf web site, many clever ideas. Now that I have play with this set of 7, I'm anxious to do something bigger, more and complicated.
Due to WFH, being a shopaholic, and watching too much twitch. I've been on a buying spree of everything and anything that can make my home office more "cool"/"dope"/"hip"/"sus"/"no cap" (I dont know what the cool kids say these days). So naturally this brought me to buying some nanoleaf. So straight up, the app is one of the worst apps I've ever used and most of this review will be me complaining about how bad the app is. But I am still keeping it partially because I like it and partially because I am too lazy to take it down after all the effort I put in to find the right design and mount it to the wall. After unpacking the shapes, I had both the triangles and hexagon shapes, I loaded up the app to use the AR so I can test different designs in the room. This completely failed because the app didn't have the new triangle shapes and could not do the hexagon + triangle shapes together, this was basically a couple days after it got released on BestBuy. So I had to just go old school and cut some paper into shapes and tape them on the wall.To mount it to the wall I ended up using 3m command strips and that was a pain because the interconnects between the shapes kept on popping off.Once I got it all mounted, after much drinking and crying, I loaded up the app to pair the controller. I could not pair it until I ended up using the QR code that was on a piece of paper in the box. DO NOT throw this paper away because I've had to re-pair it a couple times and the only way I've been able to ever successfully pair it is using this QR code on the paper. I've photographed it, made 100 copies, laminated it, gave it to my 100 closest friends and family for safe keeping, mailed it to myself through slow mail so it shows up in a few years, just in case. After pairing it, I had the joy of going through the app to find different scenes. While it shows you the basic colors that are part of the scene and whether its a music/beat based or a fixed pattern scene, it doesn't do a good job of telling you what that particular scene will do. Applying the scene was never a 100% thing for me, guesstimating I would say I had around a 85% success rate where I didn't have to apply it through the app multiple times before it showed up on the device.Once its going, its actually pretty cool and I currently have it set to a relaxing scene which provides some nice ambient lighting/mood in the room, perfect for some late night coding and/or reading. That is until it just randomly turns off, randomly turns on, or just says bye felicia and pretends it doesnt know who you are. Its really disconcerting when you walk into your room and the nanoleaf is just on doing its thing, where you swear to yourself you turned it off last night, and you stand there staring at it thinking A) Its possessed and telling you a message, like get out of my house. B) Someone is hiding in the walls of your house and turning it on/off randomly to mess with you. C) The app is total garbage. D) All of the above. Most recently, an update got released so I decided to apply it to my devices. Not shockingly, this was also a terrible experience. It was super slow, didn't do a good job of telling you the progress, it basically went from 0 -> done with nothing in between. Finally the update screen still thought an update was available even though the devices were reporting the latest was applied,Anyways, I like the product, I hate the app, if you do buy it be prepared to deal with a crappy app, maybe it will treat you better, who knows.
Decent functionality... awful attachment mechanism. The Nanoleaf was easy enough to install. Had some difficulty because the WiFi 6 router provided by my ISP does not have separate SSID for 2.4 GHZ and 5.0 GHZ bands... but I was happy with functionality of the native Nanoleaf app and the brightness of the Nanoleaf.I have two major issues with both the product and the company.1. Razer Chroma Integration is awful. The Nanoleaf module that is no longer supported seemd to have greater functionality that the bridge provided through the nanoleaf app. This is, in and of itself, not a major issue or wouldn't be if Nanoleaf did not market the feature heavilty.2. Far greater issue is the attachment mechanism... Simply the adhesive is not reliable enough to keep all ... MoreDecent functionality... awful attachment mechanism. The Nanoleaf was easy enough to install. Far greater issue is the attachment mechanism... Simply the adhesive is not reliable enough to keep all panels attached for extended periods of time and the stretch to remove feature doesn't appear viable either, as I attempted to carefully stretch the adhesive pad from under the nanoleaf as instructed by their Youtube videos and still had the pad crumble and then cause damage when I had to forcibly remove the piece to reattach the three initial triangles that fell.As you can see, all the pieces have fallen and I'm working with their support currently.I'm guessing I won't make much headway though as directly in Nanoleaf's limited warranty there is a passage that reads as such:"Damage to paint or installation surface is not covered under the warranty, exercise care."This indicates to me that Nanoleaf does not have a reliable solution for securing their product to most mounting surfaces and yet, still want to sell customers on easy attachment and detachment.I'd consider this a bit of an alpha or beta product and not one suitable for full commercial release.
