Native Instruments Traktor Kontrol Z1 DJ Controller

Provides the exact feel and functionality as the Traktor S4 mixer, but in a more compact hardware version. Instead of lugging around my flight case I can just bring my Z1 whenever I need to travel light. - DJ Northstar

Whilst the X1 is a formidable beast, I really had to have a regular mixer layout. Together the X1 and Z1 are a brilliant and very ergonomic team.

A great product...

Bought this, then bought the X1 and will shortly be buying the F1 - I am using these with a laptop and Pro 2 so you really need the full set to have a full setup. Really good build quality although the crossfader is too loose for my liking. The only issue for me is going to be that I will need to get a USB hub as MacBooks only have two USB ports and these units cannot be daisy-chained. I bought the bags with the two units I have so far which are excellent quality and also act as stands so are well worth the extra few quid. As another reviewer noted, the bag only fits the unit so you will need to put the leads somewhere else.

A lot for your money!

This is great - you get a decent mixer, some nice (if basic) visual level monitoring, a decent quality sound card and - this is the best bit - headphone monitoring for cueing your tracks (essential for those that want to get stuck into proper beat matching). Ok, it lacks transport controls (unless you remap it), but stick it alongside an F1 and X1 and you’re a fully fledged mobile setup. Get them second hand (I did - all from CEX for less than £200) and they’re a steal. Awesome!

Basic but works well!!!

Ok, it doesn't have the functionality of the larger controllers, but i bought this for when i am away from my studio and can still mix. I can plug it into my laptops usb and my headphones into my controller and i'm lost for however long in my own world. The only thing i wish is had was a dedicated play button, but there is a get around, as with everything. Great, no frills, light, you don't need a mains lead, what is there not to love! Go...seek...purchase and have fun!

Great Slick Control Board

Very helpful bit of gear that has both easy connectivity & interface. The only thing unintuitive was figuring out how to hit play on either side of the deck [you hold “mode” & then either A or B respectively]All in all it’s very useful for those DJing from a laptop at a budget

Great bit of kit...but could have been excellent!

Lets look at using it with the iPad first.So to make use of the Z1 with your iDevice, you will need the following: an iDevice, the TraktorDJ App, a Z1, and if like me, you bought a lightning equipped iDevice, a Lightning to 30 pin adapter. (Note: I did try a USB A to USB B adapter using my Lightning cable into the Z1 and it didn't work).Setting up:Plug in the Z1 power cable, plug in the USB to 30 pin connector (for lightning devices, you plug the 30 pin cable into the adapter, then the adapter in the iDevice) into your iDevice, plug in some speakers via the RCA on the Z1 and some headphones into the front of the Z1 (because of the way TraktorDJ works, headphones are really required, but I wouldn't not use them...just in case!).When you plug the Z1 into your iDevice, you will be asked if you want to allow it to communicate with TraktorDJ...say Yes. TraktorDJ will automatically start and your off and running.In use:One thing to remember with the Z1 is that it is primarily a mixer, but in the last update to the app, NI did give it basic transport controls.So what do we have available to us. Well, the main thing is dual output stereo audio, via the 30 pin. That means you have master and PFL audio channels both in stereo - no more splitter cable nonsense!It also give you full control of each channels Gain, High/Mid/Low EQ's and volume as well as Crossfader, Cue Vol and Cue Mix, Master volume, 7 segment VU indicators, PFL buttons for each deck and two rotary knobs that control the Filters and FX (in the X Axis only), depending on the mode selected, of each deck.Transport control is simply Play/Pause and is used by holding the MODE button whilst pressing the PFL button for the deck you wish to start/stop. An interesting aside, is that when you press the MODE button, the PFL button lights up for the decks that are playing - nice little touch.The Z1 does charge your iDevice, but I have found on my iPad with Retina, that, even in Airplane mode, it maintains the charge level, it doesn't add to it. i.e if my charge is 90% when I plug the device in, it maintains the charge level at 90%.What's it like with Traktor Pro...that is a very simple one to answer - It's plug and play (make sure you have the latest version though). It is a mixer when used with TP2...oh and the Filter/FX knobs only control the Filters in TP2. The basic transport controls (holding down MODE whilst pressing a decks PFL button) do work in TP2, but really you will need an additional controller, such as the X1 (which is what I will be ordering).For me, the Z1/X1 combination is the ideal portable setup for Traktor Pro 2, as it gives you a mixer with soundcard and a control surface in two very cost effective units that have a small footprint.Conclusions...There are always going to be things that I would like any device to have, and the Z1 is no exception. For me, I would have liked the unit to have two Play/Pause buttons, one each side of the crossfader, as well as a touch sensitive rotary encoder (as used on the X1 Mk2) that would allow me to browse tracks on my iPad, then load the selected track using the PFL buttons. Also, and this could be done in software, have the Filter/FX knobs control pitch bending (state would be something like Filter OFF/FX OFF, MODE button pressed, turn anti-clockwise to Push, clockwise to Pull).Overall though it's a great piece of kit, that will form the basis of your modular, multi-platform system. I understand why NI stopped short of giving it features, such as I have mentioned above, as this would have given it a strange place in the product line-up...but would have made it a must have.One last point, regarding the cases available. It looks like only the unit fits into the bags, so you'll still have to find something to put the cables and powerpack in.

Mix from your iOS device

I use it mostly with my Mac book using the Traktor 2 Pro software which comes with about 20 + Effects and allows me to use 3 Fx at a time. I would have given the Z1 five stars, but I took off a star because it didn't come with the free LE Traktor version as described on the box. It instructs you to go to the Native Instruments website to download it, only to find you have to purchase the Traktor Pro2. My best on the go DJ piece.

Overall:The mobility of this piece is perfect. My wife and daughter went to the Philippines for some kind of church commitment. The place where they went was hard to find DJ services, I wish I could bring my DJ equipment. But, unfortunately I couldn't go with them. I told my wife to bring the Traktor Control Z1, and my iPad Air loaded with music, and with Traktor Pro2 installed, and all necessary cables. I showed her how to use it. When they got there, she showed one of her cousins how use it, rented a couple of loud speakers, the party was a blast with amazing sound system. I am a big Traktor fun, I have Traktor S4, X1 MK2, and F1 with 2 Bose L1 1S and a pair of Bose B2 Bass module on my mobile set up. I use my Traktor Z1 for small gathering. Love them. Useful controller and good audio interface

Great controller. Works seamlessly (obviously) with Traktor Pro and DJ.Audio interface is good quality as well. Would have preferred XLR or TRS outputs, but can live with the outputs with a conversion cable.
