Full disclosure- this is really more an indictment of Google and its inability to support the Nest ecosystem it assimilated in 2014 than a review of (mostly excellent) legacy Nest products themselves.What remains of the support team evidently has *no* idea how these products work or how to troubleshoot them. They're assigned to individual device categories, so you'll find yourself completely without meaningful support if you have multiple devices (e.g. Nest thermostat, doorbell, smoke detectors) and they fail, in my case, to assist each other in setup as they're designed to do. I installed this as a standalone installation (without an existing door bell chime). I used the google power adapter purchased from the google website. The doorbell was easy to install. I am extremely happy with the person and package notifications that I get promptly on my phone and apple watch. This doorbell integrated seamlessly with my google nest wifi / google speakers. A few seconds after someone rings the doorbell my google speakers chime.My only complaint is that the camera view could be a little bit wider. I I would like to capture a little more of the floor infront of my door. I could probably angle the doorbell down a little to accomplish this.

I switched to the Google Home ecosystem from the Ring ecosystem... The leading factor being the Ring doorbell was so inconsistent! Not connecting to live feeds or dropping signal, having to restart it etc.The Nest Doorbell was a great switch! The video quality is better, it connects EVERY time I go to Live. Catalogs footage better and makes it easier to navigate. It also pops up with the Nest Cams in the Google Home app which is nice to have it all in one place.I have seen some reviews where peoples covers have begun to fade and peel from excessive sun exposure. Currently that would be my only worry for this living in SE Texas. Mine however looks perfect still. My old SkyBell doorbell camera had its motion sensor recently damaged by a would-be thief. The camera would inconsistently miss people. I was looking for a replacement when I learned from my Goddaughter’s husband that he has Nest equipment set up. I took the plunge and got the Nest doorbell. The wiring at the doorbell chime was the difficult part as I had the back door doorbell and the transformer wires all using the same color wiring. I had to play around with the wiring to get it right. Once that got out of the way it worked like a champ. Now I’m looking at the other Nest products to see what else I can get.
TDLR: Internal Battery on the WIRED Nest Doorbell will eventually go bad and doorbell will not function properly.Sadly, Google Nest doesn't tell you that there is a non-user serviceable battery inside the wired Nest Doorbell. This battery acts kind of like a capacitor that gives extra juice to power the speaker inside the unit as well providing protection from voltage drops if you use a physical door chime. It's a very small LiPo battery that unfortunately, overtime, will slowly degrade and fail.It's an incredibly poor design decision by Nest. When this happens, you won't get notifications and videos won't record upon button press. I’ve had it a couple weeks and so far I really like it. Installation isn’t as easy as Google makes it out to be. There aren’t really any included directions. Just a paper card showing what’s in the box. The directions are supplied via the app when you run it. Every home is a case by case situation so that’s probably why the directions are so vague. It’s poorly designed in the sense that you pretty much have to install it and then see how the camera angle is. Then if you need to make changes, take it all off again and start over. Potentially making new holes and dealing with the wire situation. My setup is directly into the woodwork and in a 90 degree corner. I have no room to push the wires back into when installing. So they must be shortened. Google provides extensions with push locks that are so big, they may or may not fit behind the doorbell based on how yours is installed. I also had to buy small butt wire splicers to connect the wires. So, when I installed it, I was getting too much of the sky and the nearest wall on the left. I then had to take it off the wall again, I added the included wedge and that was still not enough angle/tilt. I ordered a 3rd party adjustable swivel online and went to the hardware store and bought thick plumbing washers. When the new 3rd party swivel arrived, I installed it again, (making even more new holes because I couldn’t reuse the last holes with the included wood screws) and put the plumbing washer through the top screw in the back to give it downward tilt. That all really worked great. It has a really wide angle view. Take door chime install was pretty easy, it did supply images of normal setups and it was just connecting a couple wires and you might have to let the new Google chime sit outside your door chime housing depending if there’s room enough to fit it in the box. If you have OCD and things have to be perfectly straight, depending on how this needs to be installed, this doorbell might not be for you. Without the mods, 35% of the view was my wall and it was cutting people off at the knees and I couldn’t see the ground. With the mods, everything is now in view. My first free cloud month hasn’t ended yet so I don’t know exactly how much the subscription will be, but I’d probably buy it agin if need be.

I find only a still snapshot with no video stream recorded for any event. This is even after signing up for the Nest Aware trial subscription.FALSE ALERTS are problem. MISSED EVENTS are a worse problem. The shear number of false alerts (more than 90% of the alerts) by this product are a SERIOUS problem. You can't adjust the limits (Google is supposedly protecting us from ourselves,) but you can turn off the microphone to stop sound detection. Of course, that totally removes any intended potential benefit of the feature, but broken is broken. I received video notifications when I retrieved a package from beneath the doorbell. I received NO NOTICE WHATSOEVER that anyone had arrived on my porch to make that delivery.Integration between the original Nest Home and the new requirement of Google Home is weak and buggy. GUI features needed to configure options in Google Home finally appeared DAYS after they were needed. And they're no more effective than those available out-of-the-box.Support exists in name only. Bot responses are absurd and unhelpful. Documentation (if you're lucky enough to actually surf up something on your own) is a mixed bag of contradiction, broken links, and DIY communities where info must, yet again, be considered suspect.

But any function that requires that small battery back will turn the Nest Doorbell off and on.Just wanted anyone thinking of buying this device to consider the annoyance they'll eventually face. The first 2 years of ownership were pretty great. But you gotta ask yourself, is 2 - 3 years of operation good enough for the cost? Buyer beware.

The video footage is saved to the cloud and must be downloaded if you really want to have a copy of it for whatever use you might have for it. To me this is nothing short of a ripoff for most consumers. Also, depending upon how far it is away from your router it most likely will lose connection and without Nest Aware you probably won't even know that it is not working.
