Let me give you a bit of background before I launch into why this item is garbage. I have had and loved a Plume mesh system for many years that has worked very well and any problems I had tech support (talking engineers here not tier one agents, for complex firmware bugs in a 10g network) were able to resolve. Again a great mesh system that rarely had issues. But it was beginning to show its age as I brought more and more wifi 6e devices into my network. The devices were faster than the old wifi five could serve up and Plume has yet to release a 6e network so I set out to find the best replacement that I could and found the orbi. It had it all 10g wan, 2.5g for backhaul, and a dedicated wifi backhaul system that promised to be the best ever made. It had it all 10g wan, 2.5g for backhaul, and a dedicated wifi backhaul system that promised to be the best ever made. The youtube reviews raved about its speed and capability so I bought it thinking this would be the system I could grow into for a few years. Unfortunately the reality could not be further from the truth. I setup the mesh system and right off the bat I knew something was wrong when my wired speeds tanked from 900 up and down to a measly 10 up and down. We are going to set aside the wifi problems for the moment and just focus on the lan. So I called up tech support and got someone that insisted that this was normal and that I just needed to let the network sit for 24 hours like this would magically improve the copper connections. After much face palming the tech support eagerly killed the call and I set out to do some testing on my own. I found that the system was completely unstable on even simple task one moment the network would blast off and I would get gigabit speeds then the next it would tank again. I quickly sought to isolate the problem and did numerous test with my 10g switch on or off the network, changing ports, etc but never could get speeds to work consistently. All the while I fought the same issues on the wifi network devices would connect to the 6ghz band and get just abysmal performance. I tested this locally and externally with a half a dozen known good devices. After all this testing the magical 24 hours had elapsed and I called tech support yet again and went through a gamut of removing and rebooting devices. To no one's surprise this did nothing for the consistency and the tech support finally gave up and told me to return the product to get a better unit. Like a wifi lottery system where the roulette buy in is $1500 a shot. This is to say that the tech support would not agree that the unit was faulty only that I needed to get a "better one". All this to say that my old Plume system is back in place and my hardwired speeds are rock solid again and I will just have to wait for the day that they offer a new mesh system as the orbi is simply garbage.

This system has definitely enhanced our quality of life where use of the internet is concerned. The cons have been mentioned before by others. First, the price tag was hard to swallow, as this system is about 300% more expensive than the next one out there. Second, for that price, there is a lot of stuff like parental support tools and internet security that other, less expensive mesh units include in the price. The price might be easier for me to justify if this were a comprehensive internet access and security system.I experienced on issue with setup that was easily resolved. I had plugged the two remote nodes into the same outlet and set them side by side in the same room as the base station to set them up. The initial setup software seemed to hang and failed to program the satellites. After about 6 minutes, an error message came up on my phone indicating the failure. I moved one of the satellites to the other side of the same room and plugged it into a different outlet, and then ran the setup again. This time, it proceeded without a hitch, and the system was fully programmed in minutes. I then put the base station and both satellites on the second floor. The cable and main TV room are on that floor, so the base station is in the middle of the house on the second floor, and the two satellites are located in the north and south bedrooms on each end of the building. This resulted in great coverage throughout all rooms, including a very large area on the first floor that has no second floor above it that contains 3 rooms. In fact, when I leave the property, I get about 200 yards from the property (which is 2.5 acres itself) before my phone drops the wifi signal.

Everything in the home works as it should. We can immediately stream HD content with no buffering or pixilation. All our smart devices respond immediately. The kids have remarked on the doawnload speeds to their gaming platforms. And we can stream music to multiple speakers without fail. Robie is easy to administer and the two satellite devices extend the range to our entire home and a little beyond of coverage everywhere. The dedicated channels for IOT and base-to-satellite units give you the ability to add lots of smart devices to the network. I also love having 10 Gbps and 2.5 Gbps ports on the devices for hardwire connections. We use this for our Xbox in the basement which drastically improved the performance. I cannot recommend this system enough for your high-performance networking needs. Money we’ll spent.

System was easy to setup and get running. Had it for several months now and no issues so far. I had been on the fence about getting a mesh router system, but with my old routers (10+ years old) aging out technology wise, I decided to give it a try. Even though my house is only 3,200 sq ft, the layout presents some challenges from a wi-fi perspective. Before installing the ORBI system, I had 3 different routers (two running in access mode only) and a wi-fi extender in my detached garage. I was able to get it to work, but was not very reliable. I often had to restart and/or reset the access points and/or extender to keep it running. Also my extender would not work with the same SSI, so I had a separate wi-fi network name in the area. Now with the ORBI mesh system, it ... MoreSystem was easy to setup and get running. Also my extender would not work with the same SSI, so I had a separate wi-fi network name in the area. Now with the ORBI mesh system, it is all seamless. Installation couldn't have been any easier. I have one satellite hard wired back to the main unit and two others connecting back via wi-fi. I love the fact that the satellites communicate to themselves and the main unit on their own network/frequency. I had bought the additional satellite because of my previous experience, but honestly I don't really need the extra one. Since I have it I decided to use it, but it is really unnecessary. The coverage this system provides completely blankets almost my entire property (~2 acres). I now get decent signal and performance almost everywhere on the property.Another reason I decided to move forward with this ORBI system to to future proof my wi-fi network. Once Wi-Fi 6 become prevalent, I'm all setup to support it.
I bought the Orbi wifi 6e system after promising research seemed to indicate it was the best system out there for robust wifi coverage and a rock solid system. After all, it’s the most expensive solution on the market, so it must be top of the line, right?Wrong. The only thing that lived up to its marketing was the strong wifi coverage. We have a 3500 square foot house with a good mix of personal phones, computers and smart home devices, and I ordered 1 router + 3 satellites; more than enough. Like other striking similar 1-star reviews of this product, I work in tech and have a strong understanding of how networking / routers should work / need to be set up.From day 1, it was constant problems. Smart home devices either simply wouldn’t connect to the network (that had been perfectly fine on my prior router), or would connect to the network and have no internet connection. We’d have the whole internet just randomly go down for 10 minutes at a time, then just come right back up as if nothing happened. Mobile phones connected to the network would show connected but periodically have no internet connection. The amount of time I spent/wasted on this has been incredible; as I really wanted it to work. Between calls with our internet provider confirming it wasn’t them (it wasn’t), troubleshooting with our smart home devices that wouldn’t connect (not their fault, read to the end), it was wifi chaos for 2 weeks. As other reviews have mentioned, the Orbi app is the most unhelpful thing I’ve ever seen, surpassed only by the extremely poor Orbi admin UI in a browser. After 2 weeks I gave up and returned the system.
I have been configuring routers and WiFi access points since the first one came out in the mid-1990s. This router/AP set has the most confusing user interfaces, incomplete instructions, and the units fade-in-and-out of the interfaces, so one can't figure out what is operating. If Netgear spent more time building an app that worked for configuration and less time on the part of the app that is trying to sell Netgear Armor, extra support, etc., it would be better. There is an Orbi app, a web interface for the router, and then another web interface for the satellites. The app doesn't allow much detailed stuff to be configured, nor does the satellite web app. The web app for the router is the only place where more advanced things can be set. To add satellites, one uses the Orbi App and then clicks a sync button on the unit; in one place it says to do them one at a time, in another place it says to do it all at once. It is hard to tell if the sync worked, since there are only lights for problems, and no indication that the system has synced. The website shows a huge picture of 10GB jack on the back of a unit, implying that all units will have that, but only when you get the unit, or scroll down several screens, do they show that the satellites only have 2.5GB. I just upgraded to 5GB fiber, so that was not a happy discovery. But it doesn't matter, as I was never able to get the wired backhaul to work on the satellite, despite trying for hours.I tried contacting support, clicked on the Phone Support button the website, got routed to the Chat Support, and everytime I got to the top of the queue, I got disconnected.I have a Netgear Nighthawk 6E router, a separate Nighthawk 3-unit mesh system, and a 24-port Netgear 10GB switch -- those all work great and were easy to set up. This system, however, is a disappointment. It can't figure out if it is a system for novices to get better coverage or a more professional system (which its huge price tag would imply. If it were marketed simply as 1) Must have the router as the router (can't switch that into Access point mode), 2) The Satellites can't be used with a wired backhaul, and 3) This isn't your system if you want to buy if you want to do sophisticated configuration of the router, the system would get 3 stars.Again, I usually love Netgear's stuff, and am a computer scientist working on the Internet since before it went public, so my troubles were not from lack of understanding or ability.
If you read any review to the end, please read this one as I would really like to save you a ton of money and aggravation. I purchased the Orbi 960 in December of 2021. By the end of the first week I was having problems with reliability. I called and started a case. Since then I have spoken with at least 20-30 people, not exaggerating, and each time I sit on hold for 5-30 minutes waiting for someone to pick up. I have been told to reboot the main router, reboot the satellites, update the software, do a factory restore, change the channels, put legacy devices on the IoT network, put legacy devices on the guest network, turn off the 5GHz radio, lower the power of the 5Ghz radio, and the list goes on and on and on. I am fairly competent when it comes to IT and support the computers at work and home as well as lots of other networking related accessories including lots of Ubiquti hardware and other mesh network hardware. I would say that I have invested 10 hours minimum doing my own searching through the forums on this Orbi 960 and at least 20 hours on the phone with many different people at Netgear. Each time being told this should definitely solve my problem. What was my problem? Devices dropping offline. My new HP printer was doing it all the time as was my pool controller, my irrigation controller, my generator, my doorbells, and the biggest one seemed to be my thermostats. Once they dropped the connection they wouldn’t reconnect. I tried booting those devices but never any success. I would go to network settings and try to reconnect but was always given some sort of error. If I rebooted the main Orbi 960 router, all devices would immediately start working again, for anywhere between hours and weeks but by 2 weeks there was always at least one device that would disconnect. I was told that it sounded like a DHCP issue but there are no real settings for setting lease timing etc.Incidentally I did express concern that if they can’t get it working then I need to be able to return it and they assured me as long as the case was open, no problem, if they can’t get it working then they will refund it. After about 4-5 months I exploded on them and finally was told I was being escalated to level 2 tech support. Over the period of 2 months I was asked over and over to upload more logs and screen captures etc. etc. etc., which I did exactly what they asked, but I never received any instruction calls or email on what to do to fix the issue. At about the 6-7 month point, and getting tired of my family screaming at me to deal with it, I have told Netgear I’m finished with it, I have boxed everything up and want to return it all. They agreed and told me it would be submitted for refund and because it was level 2, this is a done deal. I then purchased an Eero Pro 6E system using a total of 5 boxes for the mesh. This was a month ago and it has worked flawless, at a fraction of the cost. No drops, no issues. I know, the IT people will say
Orbi 963 Review Highly Recommended!!!I had the Orbi RBK50 (router and 1 satellite) before this Orbi RBK963 (2 satellites) and a lot has changed!!!I also had lots of other routers through the years, many ASUS router (that got stunning reviews, BUT just sucked at real world usage/reliability), Linksys, Dlink. The ASUS had the most features BUT again, the absolute worst in stability. USB ports on routers, well put it this way…. Remove them, useless!!!I had absolutely no problems after I firmware locked my Orbi RBK50. I actually had a hard time justifying the Orbi RBK963, especially at the price. The only thing I can say I had problems with the Orbi RBK50 was Apple/ Verizon WiFi calling, on calls it would get choppy at times and I did not know the Orbi RBK50 was ... MoreOrbi 963 Review Highly Recommended!!!I had the Orbi RBK50 (router and 1 satellite) before this Orbi RBK963 (2 satellites) and a lot has changed!!!I also had lots of other routers through the years, many ASUS router (that got stunning reviews, BUT just sucked at real world usage/reliability), Linksys, Dlink. The only thing I can say I had problems with the Orbi RBK50 was Apple/ Verizon WiFi calling, on calls it would get choppy at times and I did not know the Orbi RBK50 was the problem until I replaced it with this Orbi 963 and updated my cable modem to the Netgear cx2000, from Netgear CX1000.I purchased this extremely expensive Orbi RBK963. I also learned a lot, like my iPhone 13 max pro has WiFi 6 BUT not WiFi 6E, WiFi 6 uses the 5ghz band, WiFi 6E uses 6ghz band. So I have a future prof WiFi Router now that all I can say about this router is WOW, flawless, we’ll just as good as it’s going to get, nothing works 100%, but this comes close and makes the 963 the best you can buy .Orbi gives us the best 5Ghz band for our devices, the lower 5Ghz.Lots of smart devices still only use the 2.4Ghz band and future products we buy will support the 6E and in two years or more WiFi 7 that uses and is fully backward compatible with WiFi 6E, so no worries for years (as my Orbi RBK50 I used for years and purchased used worked just outstanding, second to none!!)If you want that fancy, useless crap Asus offers then be my guest and best of luck. I have never tried TPlink and since these Orbi’s, well I don’t care to try anything else out now!!I had a little hard time with firmware updating, had to run it twice as the first time I had a glitch, as most routers I had, had glitches that would not go away, but this one after the second firmware load (same firmware, must have missed a step below) is near perfect. The device list in the app is not perfect and wrong at times, as my iPhone shows as wired. I run speed tests all times of the day and I do get with Speedtest.net all kinds of results BUT at no time did I ever get any hiccup in usage. These Orbi’s just work!!!!!! Thank you Netgear! For the ultimate in stability, reliability, a product I don’t have to reboot every few days or weeks, and for a product that is actually worth the high price!!!!WiFi calling now is perfect, super fast internet speeds. All on WiFi back haul. The way you update this router.Need a computer, laptop….1. (Skip this step, if you updated firmware and reset the Orbi system) download the latest files, RBRE960 (Router) and RBSE960 (satellites)2. Log into the router “192.168.1.1”, with user “admin” password you set it up with or just continue with the setup (if it’s the first time, or you reset the devices), wait for it to detect 2 satellites, if you have 2.3. After quick setup (note: change your WiFi SSID and password last), change the DHCP range in the “Advanced” “Setup” “LAN Setup” to 100 to 2004. (Skip this step, if you updated firmware and reset the Orbi system) Update firmware on Satellites first and wait for them to connect then the router last. To find out your IP address go to “Advanced” “Administration” “Attached Devices” and you will see the satellites ip address that you open new web pages and log into each, in their you will find a firmware tab.5. (Skip this step, if you updated firmware and reset the Orbi system) After all Orbi’s are back online, check their firmware and make sure all 3 have the same latest version, now reset all of them, by putting a paper clip in the reset hole and holding each one for 15 seconds. Let them boot back up then go back to step 2.6. I unchecked “Known DoS attacks and Port Scans” in “advanced” “Administration” “Logs” as I was getting lots but the router is doing what it does best at, blocking those so I don’t need to know that.7. Then went to “Advanced” “Setup” “Wireless Setup” and changed my SSID, WiFi password, 2.4 ghz channel (NOTE: I changed my 2.4ghz channel from auto to a channel that I found was not used in my neighborhood), left unchecked “Enable 6 GHz Only Network” (note: the 6 GHz channel is automatically on without this enabled, enabling this is only for testing the 6ghz channel so you can choose and log into the 6ghz Chanel only), and turned off the “Enable IoT Network” (my preference only!), if I was setting up my entire house again, I would use this LoT for all smart devices (like. Light switches, frig, washer, etc like that.8. Let the Orbi system boot up9. Now power everything off, all 3 Orbi’s and the cable modem. Wait 2 minutes then power the cable modem back on, wait 2 minutes, then power on the Orbi’s, wait 5 minutes then all should be up and running great!
After giving up with the never ending issues of my last Mesh System I bit the bullet and purchased the AXE11000 Mesh System. The Orbi System was replacing a 5 node mesh system that had “fairly good” reception save for one node but a system that experienced endless firmware upgrade issues!! The Orbi installation was straight forward, the satellite integration was unbelievably simple!! The whole process took about 10 minutes. The performance is OUTSTANDING!! I have solid connections/performance throughout the house. WiFi speed checks through all units indicate modem connection speeds, the System ROCKS! The only “Con” to the entire package is the “Orbi Armor” provided by Bitdefender. The only “Con” to the entire package is the “Orbi Armor” provided by Bitdefender. I use Bitdefender Virus protection on my computers but chose to add Armor as a second layer of protection. BUT, I’m tired of being nickeled and dimed (as only Bitdefender can do) for every feature, VPN, and “added layer of protection” Bitdefender wants to add to my WiFi and all the devices that touch it! Please, you have an outstanding system here with a descent Dashboard. You offer your Armor protection which I chose to enable but the endless “Add this for $1.49 a month” is ruining the entire experience! This system deserves 5 STARS, you received 4 because of the poor implementation of your App with the Bitdefender. You have a good package, quote a single price for the package and end the endless “For a dollar more we can add this”!! As I said, this is an outstanding system that provides exceptional performance which meets all of my needs BUT is distracted by poor salesmanship of “additional security software”!!
I originally purchased a Orbi AX4200 unit as I had recently upgraded my internet connection to 1.4Gbps and needed a new unit that supported Gigabit connections. The AX4200 showed on the box that it supported up 4 to 5Gbps but found out in the end that it does not, maybe router to satellite but not actual internet speed. It supports UP TO 1Gbps, if your connection is over 1Gbps you are out of luck, at best you will get is around 950Mbps or less, so I returned the AX4200 and purchased this unit (AXE11000).Setup, same as the AX4200 was a breeze and the nice thing was I did not have to remove the old unit from the app, I just tapped setup new Orbi system and setup did the rest. I've seen several complaints regarding the Orbi setup, but I did not have any issues; ... MoreI originally purchased a Orbi AX4200 unit as I had recently upgraded my internet connection to 1.4Gbps and needed a new unit that supported Gigabit connections. I've seen several complaints regarding the Orbi setup, but I did not have any issues; unplug internet modem, plug in modem and let it boot up, plugin ethernet cable into the ethernet port into your modem, plug ethernet cable into Orbi router (Gigabit port yellow ethernet port), connect power cable to Orbi router and plug it in. Give it a few minutes to boot up, open the app and follow the instructions to finish router setup and connect satellite(s), it's as easy as that! After setup I ran a speed test, download speeds were between 1.4 to 1.5Gbps, upload side around 40Mbps +. My primary workstation is a PC with external drives connected that are shared over the network that is plugged into the Orbi routers Gigabit ethernet port. One external drive has a lot of video files on it. From my laptop, I accessed the drive via file manager, double clicked an mp4 file and the video started playing almost instantaneity. Anything internet relate is super-fast!!Make sure in setup (orbilogin.net or go to the IP to login in a browser), go to Wi-Fi, make sure you enable Wi-Fi 6. What this does, if you have a device that supports WiFi6e, when you scan for available networks, it will show in available networks and is much faster than WiFi6.Another thing, if you are connected via Wi-Fi and are connected to the router, a speed test will show very high speeds (same as your internet connection), if you are connected to a satellite, speeds will be slower. Example my connection is 1.4Gbps down, speed test showed 750Mbps down when connected to the satellite, upload side was not affected. Of course, anyone considering buying one of these units will have internet speeds in excess of 1Gbps; I am saying this because if you have less than 1Gbps you are wasting your money buying an AXE11000 as there are other Orbi units that support up to 1Gbps that cost much less.I hope this review helps anyone who is considering purchasing a 960 unit. Yes, these unit(s) are very pricey, but in today’s world you get what you pay for. Bottom line I highly recommend the AXE11000. One final note, Orbi support is great, they are 24/7, very helpful, and they actually know what they are talking about!
