A Networking Powerhouse with Antiquated Software

Sitting out in driveway I still receive just as good connectivity as I do in the bedroom (the unit being in the kitchen.)Appearance-wise this is a unit that looks like it should be small and cute, but it's actually quite large - heavy too. Antiquated and looking like a throwback to those 1990's websites, the interface is slow on just about any action. While it offers a lot of what Power Users like, it can be frustrating waiting for the page to refresh.Using the Genie software provided by Netgear, the Orbi seems like an aberration. While Genie works, you can definitely tell it wasn't meant for the Orbi.Hopefully Net gear comes up with updated software that offers better usability with the style a beautiful device like the Orbi deserves. In Conclusion: For a 2,000 square foot cinder block home, this unit has been able to handle heavy use all on it's own. Coverage hasn't been an issue and the nice matte finish means the router doesn't stand out as much while sitting on my kitchen counter. If you can get past the aging software interface you'll enjoy a very power-user friendly device.

Changing the password bricked the device

I chose this based on its aesthetics and the promise of better WiFi. Setup was straightforward, but after I changed the router password, it froze and I could no longer connect to it. The factory reset procedure didn't help either. I've found Netgear to be unreliable in the past, so I packed this up and returned it, rather than waste my time troubleshooting. I was also unimpressed with the flimsy build quality, so I'm not surprised by the reviews saying this falls apart in six months. I purchased a Linksys EA8300 instead and it's been working just fine. The product sounded promising, but it didn't deliver.

Excellent coverage in range and speed.

I have only owned this router for a week now and covers my 1900 square foot one level home with no problems. Much better speed and signal coverage from the opposite end of the house. Before this one I owned the Costco exclusive Netgear nighthawk 7900 model similar to the 8000 model and this didn't give the coverage needed. When setting up the Orbi for the first time make sure to go to the routers login page in the browser 192.168.2.1. Login with default username and password you can change later. You must use MAC address from old router for the Orbi. This was the only way I could get it to connect to Charter spectrum. Would highly recommend Orbi.

Great Wifi Coverage and Speed
1 June 2019

The Wifi signal all across our quite large house is now at full bars or at worst one bar less than full in the odd room, this compared to the original Wifi signal from our TalkTalk router which was at about one bar or two bars in most rooms. We are now getting full speed internet everywhere which is great for my Sonos system and for the kids xbox and other gadgets which used to struggle due to the lower speed of the connection. It was also so easy to set up and connected to our original router with the supplied ethernet cable with no problems and no settings needed to be changed other than turning off the Wifi on the old router. After logging in with the app and adding the satallite it was all set up! I really wasn't expecting Orbi to be that good but have to say ... MoreThe Wifi signal all across our quite large house is now at full bars or at worst one bar less than full in the odd room, this compared to the original Wifi signal from our TalkTalk router which was at about one bar or two bars in most rooms. Love My Orbi!
28 September 2018

My house has HORRIBLE WiFi reception! We called my cable provider numerous times trying to figure out the reason. I finally purchased several routers and extenders, which did solve the reception problem, but there were numerous network names and passwords. I purchased the Orbi system, and it is working perfectly! Great reception throughout the entire house (and outside - using the outdoor expansion). The best part, we only have 1 network router name and only one password. I highly recommend the Orbi system!

Met my expectations
1 June 2019

Unlike before I now have wifi everywhere on my property. I also have a sonos speaker system which uses wifi so I literally have music in every corner of my property which is excellent for bbqs. I can also monitor my kids internet usage as well as turn their wifi off via my phone so they aren't gaming when they should be studying or sleeping. Definitely an advantage in my house hold. I will take credit over the orbi, only because I researched and chose the orbi and it definitely met my expectations. Great work Netgear.

Perfect condition
25 April 2022

I had the newer version which was actually has a slower processor, no Voice, USB port (now to find something that can make use of it as it doesn't always work with portable drives I hear) and less RAM. Bought these instead, returned the other ones. Great WiFi coverage (corner to corner about 80 ft), nice big sound, and Alexa ability without buying more echo products. Got delivered early too.

Piece of junk
20 March 2021

It worked great for about 9 months to 12 months then it started disconnecting daily. Sometimes a simple reconnect via app but increasingly having to disconnect Orbi and modem. This was happening EVERY day for 6 weeks. Admittedly we'd just use the modem (Frontier FIOS, which is great) at times because of the time involved but it was difficult sometimes impossible because of the distance her work computers were from the Frontier modem and Orbi router. We had to Orbi satellites also. When I called to get some help from Netgear (after the free 90 day warranty/help period). They gave me an online case # and said to call within 24 hours. I called immediately and got hung up on twice. They act like they're going to look at your case number then I hang up. It seems after the 90 day window they know their product is a pile of junk and don't want to be confronted with it. I would never by an Orbi again and would most likely not buy any of their products. They don't work and the company offers no help or support. They just hide.

Super Easy Set up...but jury still out
3 December 2016

I bought Orbi to replace my Apple Airport Express - which was great but started to drop connection several times per day. Research showed some sort of glitch between the Airport and Cox (my internet provider). I also loved the idea of stronger signals for multiple devises. Set up of Orbi was super easy - and the signal does seem stronger even without the satellite. It solved the dropping issue for about 3 weeks - but now has started to drop randomly. Still digging for a cause - noted on support forums that others are experiencing this as well. I did purchase a 2nd unit for a residence in another state that is 2 story and set up the satellite there and it works great - it has not dropped at all and the signal is super strong everywhere. Wonderful range
1 June 2019

Being a network engineer I originally stayed away from domestic products for home. This time I wanted something simple and low maintenance. This way my wife wouldn't need to call me at work after having technical issues. After doing my research I had chosen the orbi. I have a large home and didn't think two devices were enough. After unboxing and plugging in the orbi I was surprised. The speed and reception is amazing. I recommend anyone this product for their home. It's a wonderful.
