Easy Setup and Good Range

The setup for the Orbi RBR863S was easy and straight forward. Using the app is mostly for initial setup but you will need to access the web interface for customized setting such as changing the Subnet (if desired), IP reservations, port configurations and wifi broadcast options. The interface is a little slower to respond then my previous Netgear R6300. I used ethernet backhaul since I was already setup to do so but it also worked fine using wireless backhaul. I have a 3 story 2400sqf. house and signals are good in most portions of the house and don't have any issues with throughput. I have seen online where others have had this same issue so I believe it to be more of an issue with the device than the Orbi since I also had some problems over the last few months on my R6300. Ok, now for my only real complaint. At over $1K I think there should be built-in fine grained firewall options for parental and device controls without having to pay for a subscription based app that is lacking in configuration options. I find this to be just a money grab for continued revenue steam. I have a couple of internal services I run that use port forwarding and with all the port scanners out on the internet they obviously hit and get sent into the device. Thankfully they are secure connections which get rejected but would like to have the ability to block inbound IP's before they even hit my devices or have a list of approved IP's for the service. There are no options for that so you have to relay one the Orbi's "PAID" Security Interface. If it does find an attack, it merely states an attack was found an blocked but only shows you the IP and no info on what kind of attack it was. Overall I am pleased with the Orbi RBR960 and would recommend it. I am taking one star away due to the lack of built-in controls at this price point.

One other thing I would say is that for what it is, it's very expensive. I have used the Amplifi Alien router and that is less expensive and seems to work just as well, with a much easier to use app. Also, for the price while it has a 10 gbs incoming connection the outgoing ethernet ports should probably be at lease 2.5 gbs. Am I satisfied, yes, it works well in my situation, but the setup with the app could be much better.

Great investment

I upgraded from a 6 year old Asus router and have been very happy with how reliable the Orbi has been since I put it into my home network. The wifi easily covers my 2800 sq ft home and the triband system keeps all my devices connected with very little interruption. I have not explored the more advanced features thus far, but plan to look more into the parental controls to protect my children. Will likely upgrade my system with a Orbi satellite unit in the near future!

Meets my expectations

My previous Orbi was getting quite old. I wanted better speed and coverage. This isn't the current top of the line with Netgear but it is what Netgear recommended for my conditions and considerably cheaper. I have a 1400 square foot home with a finished basement. The router gave me very good coverage everywhere in my home on it's own. 600 to 800mps average. One satellite extended good coverage with average of 600mps coverage to my patio and at least 50' into my backyard. I only got about 40mps in my outbuilding 35' behind the house which I believe is because of it's aluminum backed insulation board. I was concerned the signal was to weak to sync the other satellite. I have 7 items wired to the main router. 4 directly and 3 through a splitter and about 6 items regularly using wireless. All the speeds listed were wireless using my Iphone to run the speed tests. I have 1G service. I am quite satisfied with this purchase. Plus I got 15% of the purchase price back by recycling my old Orbi through Best Buy!

Compared to my Netgear R6300 this is not doing so well. Had issues setting it up despite the claim it would be easy with Xfinity. Had to call them and have them flip some switches and spent some time on support. Then like 3 days later had to reset the system to factory and redo it again as speeds and performance awful. Finally settled in and was doing good but I have and avg 1600sq ft cape home and cant even get signal to stay connected on my back deck. With my old R6300 I could go sit in my garden 50 ft from house and still watch youtube with no issues. This one...constantly buffers and says Not connected...back online.. Not connected... I pay for 350mbps service and a few times have gotten 350+ but usually 200 -250 wired. XboxOne though seems to get only 25 - 60 ... MoreCompared to my Netgear R6300 this is not doing so well. Handles enough devices but not stellar with speed or range for claimed 2000sq ft coverage. Software also not impressive and have had about a year now and never got a firmware update so far. No QoS settings either. Just links you to SpeedTest. Software also seems catered to mesh but using this as stand alone unit as advertised 2000sq ft coverage but not getting that at all. Also, I have ended up turning off 'Circle' as it caused issues with my sons ability to use Microsoft store despite permissions and just didnt have the level of fine tuning I expected. Personally I would have liked a newer version of the R6300 with some of todays modem features. I like that its a Modem and Router in one but still needs improving. For the high price tag - expected better. Family wants me to ditch it. Have rebooted it like 6 times in as many months trying to get better performance, range and stability but so far its not impressive.

Price had me worried, but the product does not disappoint!
14 February 2023

I was a little concerned at the great price that was being offered, that perhaps it wasn't actually new as advertised, but it came sealed in the box and set up in no time. Works great so far. Set it up at home to try it out (thought it came with free parental controls as my Nighthawk did, but apparently they are subscription only), and it gave about a 75% signal everywhere in the house as opposed to the direct line hookup. Took it to work when it didn't provide the home options I was hoping for without a subscription, and it works great here. Even better than expected. I get a 100% signal wherever I go around the office/lab. Very satisfied with this unit and it's satellite and really couldn't beat the price.

Terrific Mesh System
21 December 2021

I'd previously been using a Netgear Nighthawk wireless router and extender; however, with a growing population of home automation devices, it was time to upgrade to a mesh network. I'm using two RBS850 satellites with the RBR850 router (in AP mode) with terrific results. Excellent video and audio streaming results, strong backhaul signals in our mid-sized tri-level home. Orbi iPhone App works really well for initial setup, basic configuration and day-to-day management. Web app provides more advance features. Super-handy Ethernet ports on the back of each module allow a mix of wired/wireless devices and provides extender-like capabilities. I have nothing bad to say about this mesh system.

We had cable service techs coming to my home at least 3 times to do a wire trace from the outside box through the house like sherlock homes trying to track down a ruthless bandit following cable run, splitters, boxes etc... often replacing them along the way. However none of this worked in resolving the issue of not having the consistent, stable and fast internet that we were paying for. To comc@st's credit they always worked with us, pro-rating a credit for us when we would go days and sometimes a week without service waiting for a tech or support to call us back. So I thought you know let's try the modem (who knows) ...comc@st had replaced my current leased Arr!s model 2 times already so I knew this was a stretch but I was willing to try anything. So I researched cable modem routers and eventually found this Netgear Orbi CB-40 model at Costco. Once I got it setup my family and I stood around this router watching intently like a life boat in the middle of the ocean, holding our breath, saying a silent prayer and crossing our chests hoping this would resolve 14 months of internet madness. To our great surprise and much delight this incredible piece of equipment fired up in a minute...blinking lights started shooting across left to right, blinking then steady, blink then steady...with each light we gripped our hands tighter until the final light went steady. We looked around at each other like, can this be, was it that simple.... in disbelief we started checking our phones...check, laptops....check, then finally the holy grail, tv streaming.... CHECK! We ran around the house jumping and skipping, the neighbors came over to make sure we were OK....however I secretly harbored the dread that this could not last. The next day, still going strong....good, a full week no issues....great, a full month, not a SINGLE solitary issue...excellent. It has now been about 10 months now, let me tell you we have not had 1 (that's ONE) issue with this cable modem and the satellites make the coverage to the whole house SO SO good, there are no dead zones. Setup and management of this router was so easy, I cant believe how much better this system is than the rest. I work in computer IT and security (I do not work for nor am I affiliated with Netgear in anyway) and I am soooooooo impressed with Netgear on this system. Kudo's to any person, group, team or aliens responsible for the Netgear Orbi Cable Modem and Satellite WiFi Mesh system.... grand slam baby! Keep up the good work, keep your prices reasonable and this will continue to be a HUGE success, I am bragging to co-workers, family, neighbors and random strangers I find in the grocery store lines.... so impressed!!!! Sincerely, your new and loyal Orbi customer!

not compatible with RBS850 satellite

This router was a huge fail. It is NOT compatible with the RBS850 satellite as advertised on the Netgear website. The satellite will appear to sync (solid blue light), but does not show up in the Orbi app or the web admin panel. Other issues: WiFi printers and Sonos devices are not recognized on the network. WiFi signal also intermittently drops. Summary: BRICKED Outcome: returned it and replaced with the RBR850, which works flawlessly (none of the above issues)
