1080 for long runs. This for everything else.

Absolutely love this shoe! The way the stability plane is implemented is very comfortable and smooth. The stability is there but it's not obtrusive. Maybe it's the EVA film or dual density foam but it feels like there's an extra pep that makes it more enjoyable than the 880v14. If I had to choose one for long runs (~10 miles) I would still choose the 1080v13 but I would absolutely choose the 860v14 for everything else including shorter and faster runs.Compared to other stability shoes, I prefer this much more than the Kayano 30, which is very cumbersome and clunky in the heel compared to the 860v14.For people with wide feet, the extra-wide 860v14 is wider than the Vongo v6 extra-wide. The foam sole needs a firmer support layer (below the foam). The foam is so spongy that your foot can rock from side to side as you walk (not a matter of shoe fit). This could lead to injury or joint pain from improper alignment. The 2E version of the show tapers too much at the toe to be comfortable for those of us that require a wide toe-bed. The side of the shoe right below the ankle bone doesn’t come high enough to give proper support/stability.The tread of the shoe is similar to my previous 840v4 2E but thinner and softer. So the treads will wear out even faster than my old shoes.All-in-all the shoe isn’t all that bad for someone with a narrower toe but without a more durable tread and ergonomic support layer, I can’t say the shoe is going to work well.

My wife and I purchased the Fresh Foam X 860v14. This is the third consecutive generation of the 860 model that we have owned.I generally like the shoe. I find it comfortable and it fits well. I wear a mens size 14 and there is proper room in the toe box and no constriction at the ball of my foot. I wear the shoe five days a week for my exercise regimen. I have worn it consistently for about three weeks now and it seems to be holding up very well, consistent with other New Balance shoes that I have worn. I generally replace shoes every 8 to 12 months.I replaced the standard insole with an a custom arch support orthotic insole and it fit perfectly. The added cushioning also makes the shoe feel less stable. I don't know exactly how to describe the sensation but I feel that I make more corrections when walking in order to stay on a straight line.- Heel Tab. The heel tab tends to rub the back of the foot. The prior version of this shoe (v13) had a flared heel tab that curved away from the back of the foot. It's a minor annoyance that does not seem to serve any positive purpose.- Instep. I have a slightly high instep and the v14 model does not seem to have quite as much room in the upper. The stretch laces help.Overall, I am pleased with the 860v14. They make changes to the model each year and each change brings positives and negatives. I don't feel that these are quite as comfortable and stable as the v13 in some respects.Quality is excellent. Comfort is between 3 and 4.

One of the very few shoes for men in extra narrow.
26 July 2024

This is the only company that makes a few styles of shoes/running shoes only, for men with narrow feet that I could find. Many companies only have C widths as their narrowest. That is very, very bad. Many companies go from D to much wider, not caring for the folks that need a narrow size. If a company has a few C widths, they run out fast...So why not carry more then? No one knows. New Balance does not seem to carry walking or hiking shoes/boots and no work boots in narrow much less extra narrow that I need. I guess that work boots or hicking boots in narrow or extra narrow are not important for us minority narrow footed guys...Thanks that they have about four styles of running shoes that come in 14 extra narrow for me to wear...but none in walking, hiking, or ... MoreThis is the only company that makes a few styles of shoes/running shoes only, for men with narrow feet that I could find. Say goodbye to stability
21 June 2024

The 860 has been my go to NB sneaker for many years. I've always appreciated the stability underfoot of this particular model. Those days are gone. The update to the shoe itself looks great. I love the fresh white look of the shoe. Asthetically it's a very nice shoe. Quality seems to be fine in terms of construction. Unfortunately that's where good things end. There's no reflective material as one small detail, which is perplexing given that it's a running shoe. Worst aspect is there is no underfoot stability. The foam is squishy and squishy to the point where the outer heel and front foot feel unstable. I could not envision myself training or running in v14, walking is a little bit of a challenge with these. The density of the foam is poor, it is incredibly soft. ... MoreThe 860 has been my go to NB sneaker for many years. I've always appreciated the stability underfoot of this particular model. For those seeking stability, and a soft yet firm slab of foam under your feet, look elsewhere. Very disappointing update to a shoe that's been mostly sensational through the years. NB needs to relabel these, because they are NOT a stability shoe. There are neutral shoes with more support and that's pretty sad.

This Shoe is Basically the Ugly V12 (Not a Fan)
10 September 2024

So happy you guys kept the gusseted tongue!!!! But this fit is weird and why did you guys go with this boring bulky tongue? I love the V13/V11 tongue. I’m going to sit this model out. It’s comfortable but not like the previous 860 model. I also fit in a standard width V13 really well but this V14 model feels wider in the mid section and I don’t like it. I don’t understand why you guys went back to this old man look that the (V12) had…. The V13 was so cool and modern looking. Wish you guys would stick with that. Another family member stated the same thing that the new model feels wide in the midsole and not so snug. I’ll just order the V13 on Amazon and wait for the V15 to release. Not impressed with this one at all.

Toe netting wears out too fast before rest of shoe
19 November 2024

This review is for the 860, I believe 13. These shoes were fitted correctly to my feet from the Shoes That Fit store in Modesto, CA. The shoes are incredibly comfortable. BUT! As with the other NB shoes I bought before this, the part where the 'netting' starts on the top of the shoe gets a hole in it. My toenails are kept short; there's no reason for this. The part of the shoe that goes around the netting is far superior in durability. I get that the netting is for breathability, but the 'pointy' look of the netting is incorrect. It should be more of a round line. As much as I like the fit and comfort, I won't be buying any more of the NB shoes as they wear a hole in the toe area on any of the NB shoes I've bought, and they are the correct size and fit....AND this ... MoreThis review is for the 860, I believe 13. This cannot be a coincidence. This is a problem that can EASILY be fixed. I would send a picture, but the optional 'Add pictures" doesn't seem to be working.

Waste of money
7 October 2024

I wanted running shoes because my normal shoes are better for CrossFit and short runs. Wanted shoes for running heavy workouts over a 1km. Had foot gait analysis and was told to buy these even though I told them I had flat feet and a previous ruptured tendon, they maintained based on video analysis that I should buy these shoes. I tried wearing them for a day at work to break them in and my right ankle with old injury started to hurt and they haven’t hurt in a long time. I’ve switched back to my old CrossFit shoes and these shoes are living under the bed unused other than the time I wore them at work. Waste of money. Bad advice given and listened to. I am more mad at myself because I should know better and just cos someone works at a shoe store and has video gadgets ... MoreI wanted running shoes because my normal shoes are better for CrossFit and short runs. They’re probably good for someone else but I don’t recommend them for flat and wide feet. They don’t feel supportive. Too much like pillows under your feet, soft but feels unstructured. They feel good in the store but not out in real life. You want stability? Don’t get these.

Worth it for sure

This is the first time I have bought custom fitted running shoes. The critic I will share with Yh staff and managers is this: when you have done the foot profile they ask you: which shoe do you like. That means you first get the feel that they narrow down potential shoes and the. Afterwards say: now choose any shoe. That means you start feeling that the whole foot profile doesn’t matter. That made me insecure about my purchase. I then went to the hair dresser some days after and he said the exact same happened to him. I changed my white shoes to a black pair but same model. I’m very happy with my shoes and it feels different and I now I have more support. But I think it’s very important that staff say: based on your profile these are recommended shoes to choose ... MoreThis is the first time I have bought custom fitted running shoes. [Rewarded Review] Decent stability shoe - not for everyone!

I'm a flat footed runner who needs stability shoes to go the distance. I've run in the Asics Gel-Kayanos for a number of years and wanted to try a different brand out for my training rotation. The Fresh Foam X 860v14's are a solid pair of stability shoes, but they might not be for everybody.
