The Nike Air Griffey Max 1 “Jackie Robinson” is a special edition colorway of Ken Griffey Jr. ’s signature shoe that honors the model’s 25th anniversary and the immortal former Brooklyn Dodger. “Junior” wore the Air Griffey Max 1 during perhaps one of his finest seasons with the Seattle Mariners in 1996, the same year Nike released the performance trainer. Here, the “Jackie Robinson” makeup salutes the man who broke baseball’s color barrier with the Dodgers back in April of 1947. Overtures to Robinson include Robinson’s famous quote: “There’s not an American in this country free until every one of us is free” on the ankle strap. Robinson’s “42” jersey number, which was retired by Major League Baseball in 2014, graces the lateral side of the strap and on the footbed. Griffey’s former “24” jersey number with the Mariners had previously been located in those locations on the shoe. Buttery black leather forms the base. A white painted midsole with visible Air bubbles completes the look. Release date: April 24, 2021.
