There is mostly small ridges and large flat areas on the bottle which does give great traction on smooth surfaces or carpet. When I first tried on the shoe I was wearing regular cotton socks and it felt like the shoe was crushing my foot. I put on a thinner pair of socks and the shoe fit perfectly. (True to foot size.) I immediately went for a 4 mile walk on concrete, asphalt, snow, and ice. My feet never started hurting and they didn’t get cold. I work in the medical field and decided to wear them to work in which I stood or walked for about 12 hours of my day. My feet, ankles, knees, and hips never hurt. I have never had a new shoe that I was able to stand at work all day without having to switch them out with my old broken-in shoes at some point. These shoes are awesome for walking, possibly running, working out in the gym, or wearing to work indoors if you have to be on your feet a lot. They didn’t quite match my khakis, but they would look great if you were wearing dark scrubs. They had great grip on smooth surfaces. Some of the downsides of the shoe is that it offers zero protection from above. (If you drop something on your foot, you are going to feel it. If something wet gets on top of the shoe, it will soak through to your sock and foot.) These shoes are snug and probably wouldn’t be great for someone with wide feet or who prefer a roomier shoe. Due to the minimal traction, these shoes aren’t the best for outdoor use. Concrete and asphalt will wear the sole down rather quickly. I don’t think I would even consider taking them on a mountain trail. All in all, I would buy another pair once I wear this pair out, although I think it is going to take a long time to to wear down that sole!... Personally, I found that stand up straighter and my back hurts less when I have these on. I love the look and feel of these sneakers! Love the clean white teeth like soles! (See pic)My only complaints about this sneaker is that they are hard to get on cause of the high arch (how ever it makes it so comfortable when on) and the shoe laces aren’t quite long enough for me to pull them tight and tie a decent sized bow on them. The Nike Free Metcon 5s are super comfortable, durable and supportive. 4/5 would recommend.... Where other athletic shoes I’ve owned have felt stiff, my favorite feature of these shoes is that the “firm hug” I felt upon first putting them on has stayed throughout my activities. If I had one critique to offer, it’s that my feet sometimes got too warm while wearing the shoes. It’s an easy fix with different socks, but it was notable for me. Overall, I’d highly recommend this shoe to anyone looking for a solid shoe for HIIT/variable workouts; it’s a comfy winner!... Show more

Great looking shoe but runs very narrow with a tight toebox. Size up!

Seriously great looking workout shoe that is lightweight while providing awesome supportive cushion to take the impacts your workout throws at you. While I absolutely love the look and lightweight feel of this workout shoe, unfortunately they did not work out for me because the shoe was too tight and narrow on the toebox to comfortably complete my workouts and weight training sets. For reference, I am 6'2 (175 lb athletic build) and wear a true 9.5 mens and am typically on the narrow side when it comes to shoes however, the Nike Free Metcon 5 were just too narrow at the toes that adding pressure up front during weight training was painful and uncomfortable. Lunges feel awesome in these shoes as the ankle material lets you move unrestricted which I LOVE! I love the Nike Free feeling where your shoes feel like they are an extension of you.One thing that stands out for me is the wide heel which really helps you feel stable during weight lifting workouts. The stable wide heel takes pressure off my feet and lets me feel secure to lift weights and reach new personal bests.... Show more

Great shoe for lifting
4 February 2023
This shoe is fantastic for weightlifting. I noticed an immediate difference when I used it at the gym. They really provide next level stability which especially great for full body exercises like deadlifting, but I noticed a difference even with some more targeted exercises like a shoulder press where I still need to plant my feet firmly. I loved that this shoe made me feel like I was taking things to another level. If you do a lot of cardio or running though you'll want to bring another pair of shoes to the gym though. These are perfectly fine for walking around in but I'm a pretty serious runner (4-5 times a week) and these are clearly not meant for even short runs, they have no arch support at all. Doesn't hurt that these shoes look pretty good and the black that I got is nice and neutral for whatever workout gear I happen to be wearing that day... Show more

New Favorite Shoes

First I want to say I love this shoe and it has become one of my favorites. This shoe fits and feels fantastic, the shoes feels pretty comfortable and very responsive. The feel of these shoes gives you a low-to-the-ground feeling while still providing good support. I love the materials incorporated in this shoe, they are extremely comfortable and fit my feet extremely well. I believe these shoes are very stylish and look good with whatever outfit you’ll wear. These shoes are very easy to take on and off. Walking/running or any moment in these shoes is comfortable with the design and flexibility of the shoe’s cushiony sole. This shoe can definitely be worn all day without any problem. Nike Free Metcon 5 Review everyday wear/workout and running
22 January 2023
I wore the Nike Free Metcon 5 for about a week, both around town in everyday wear/working out and running about 15 miles in total over the week. After running in them a bit I can say they provide good support and toe protection, I was able to switch over from my Brooks running shoes with moderate ease. Being training shoes they don't run as well as a traditional running shoe but can still supplement short runs. For working out the thick sole offers great support and a good firm base for whatever I was doing. Im not an avid gym goer and don't classify myself as a weight lifter. But the shoes were a definite step up compared to my normal shoes I wear to the gym.I work out plus/minus 3 days a week and for about 45 min - 1 hours doing weight workouts, HIIT workouts, ... MoreI wore the Nike Free Metcon 5 for about a week, both around town in everyday wear/working out and running about 15 miles in total over the week. This shoe worked great for all of it.My main comments were oddly going to and from the gym in the shoe and wearing out and about. I have had a variety of shoes over the years, mainly Nike tennis shoes/running shoes and Brooks running shoes. This was the first shoe to have such a thick "platform"/sole and made walking in them initially a little awkward. Lastly, while I do have a bigger foot (typically fit a 11-11.5 but I am always are more comfortable in a 12) there seemed to more than normal cushion on the roof of the shoe in the toe area. I'm sure you would get used to it, but it was not something I've had in a shoe before, its not that they didn't fit, my foot just felt very snug and secure. (something I noticed right away)Overall I think its a great shoe for the Gym, I would not say its a largely versatile shoe. But the Nike Free Metcon 5 worked great for everything I threw at it and it definitely met my expectations.... Show more

Sharp looking shoe, but could be more comfortable!
19 January 2023
As a work from home Mom, with 3 little ones to chase around all day, I was so excited to open my new shoes to try and they did not disappoint! They are so sharp looking with the black and white and the Nike swoosh going upwards. They look so sleek, I couldn't wait to put them on! I love the design of them, along with the contrasting colors. I was a little concerned that maybe I had gotten the wrong size, since they are unisex, but the 8.5 fit my 9 1/2-10 size women's foot just perfect. Initially trying the shoe on, I found it quite difficult to get on, especially with my orthotics. The fact that the tongue doesn't come away from the actual shoe made it much more difficult to wiggle my foot in and get my insert to stay put. That's definitely something I would change ... MoreAs a work from home Mom, with 3 little ones to chase around all day, I was so excited to open my new shoes to try and they did not disappoint! The fact that the tongue doesn't come away from the actual shoe made it much more difficult to wiggle my foot in and get my insert to stay put. That's definitely something I would change with this shoe. I decided the first day wearing I would try to wear inside all day as a home shoe to break them in. Although comfortable for the first few hours, I could not see myself literally wearing these all day long. I work out before my kids get up and was looking forward to tying these up for my first workout the next morning. Again, although comfortable, they are not a walking shoe in my opinion, but more of a lifting/cross fit shoe. With that considered, I switched into them when I started my lift and they worked great. Good cushion, but not overly soft. They provide just enough support to get me through my workout. I felt like I could jump, run, lunge and do stationary exercises all the same and felt good doing them in these shoes. I would definitely recommend these shoes, as my husband is jealous and wants a pair for himself!... Show more

The most comfortable shoe my husband owns.
21 January 2023
Our household is already full of Nike sneakers, from the toddlers to mama and papa. It’s slightly embarrassing, but we own probably close to 100 pairs of various styles between us all so we know the different fits well. My husband is an avid cross fitter, weight lifts, and is generally very active and athletic. He also has bad supination in his feet and has easily twisted his ankle on numerous hikes, runs, et cetera over the years since most of his shoes don’t have adequate support. Thus, he was really happy to have the chance to try out the Nike Free Metcon 5 since there’s a lot of hype about its release as the best cross fit shoe out there. The heel base is very wide to ensure a stable, well balanced stance during weightlifting and the upgraded Nike Free sole allows the foot to smoothly flow forward into a jump or other exercise during a cross fit session. The whole time the foot has a solid heel base to keep it from rolling outward while maintaining great flexibility. My husband brought his new shoes to our lake house for the weekend to test out, and he was easily able to jog on the uneven country road while pushing our 14 month old twins in their stroller. He wore the shoes all day and neither his feet nor ankles ever felt tired or weak. The Metcon 5 is easily the most versatile, stylish, and supportive shoe he owns and I have a feeling it will become his new everyday favorite. The understated grayscale design is fresh and modern and can be worn with basically any fit to add a dose of style while maintaining great all day comfort. This shoe exceeded our expectations and I can’t wait to pick up my own pair.... Show more

Very comfortable especially for lifting
21 January 2023
The shoes were very comfortable and felt light and mobile. They fit as I would expect a quality lifting shoe to feel, but did not have the rigidity to the upper that some lifting shoes do that keep you from wearing them all day.The design allows them to be both comfortable and stable when doing complex movements. The heel is a little high to wear all day (for my particular foot structure) but they fit well enough to have on for several hours and last through an extra long WOD. With highly arched feet, finding shoes with the right arch design can be difficult for me. These shoes fit the bill with a solid and appropriately arched sole, that doesn’t aggravate my foot throughout my workouts. My favorite feature is the lightness and mobility.
