I have never owned a good pair of binoculars and after using these off and on for a couple weeks I am wondering why I waited so long (I am in my 60s). The optics are excellent and I am astonished how easy it is with these 8x42s to follow a bird or flock of birds in flight. I still have a lot to learn about birding but I feel I now have the right equipment to pursue this. Low light performance is really impressive. The one minor complaint I would have is the low quality ocular lens cap, which has a tendency to pop off. Overall, outstanding pair of binoculars.

These binos are great for archery. I was running the 10x42 swaro EL's but were just too big and bulky for my archery AZ mule deer hunts. I wanted something small, light, and with great glass. I was going to go with the 830 Swaro CL but then I found the monarchs. At 1/3 the price, it boasts a larger field of view than the CL's and come with outstanding clarity. The focus knobs are tight and responsive. While yhe monarchs may not be quite as bright or clear as the cl's in low light situations, they are pretty darn close. I needed a binicular that was small enough to be unnoticeable when stalking through the desert on my hands and knees, yet clear and powerful enough to determine what is ahead of me during my stalk. This is not a binocular that I would reccomend for big country glassing as there are better hmmmm options. For my needs, I believe this is the best bang for my buck. At the end of the day, if you want to drop 2X+ the swaro CL's are a great bino, grab em! The Monarchs provide 98% of what the cl's offer in this sweet little package.

Review of Monarch 7, 8x42Primary binocs: Pentax dcf sp 8x32. Zeiss Fl 10x42My old trusty Pentax were losing their edge so I got the Nikon M7sI really love these at dusk and dawn, and in the deep woods. They are excellent in low light. I like how they fit my hand and how the focus (depth of field) racks with a single finger on the focusing wheel. Better even than my more expensive Zeiss which are a tad bit sharper. The M7s provide a nice sharp, wide view too. They do not handle a lot of light quite as well but are still good. They loose a little contrast and the light sometimes bounces around in the barrel in an unhelpful way. I?m more familiar with flare in camera lenses. Each lens has its own way of handling direct light. I carry binos for a couple hours a day ... MoreReview of Monarch 7, 8x42Primary binocs: Pentax dcf sp 8x32. Overall it?s nice glass, excellent in shade and low light. They don?t loose to much on the Zeiss and actually pull focus better.

Love those little 'nocs. I know I compared sizes in theory, but the size is perfect for my girl hands. And w the low weight they're perfect for one handed use. Image is super clear. And the deep eye-relief means I can use em even w specs.fyi: the eye lens caps are shit?I had to line the inner rims w foam tape for a tight fit. Also I did notice a small amt of blue chromatic aberration in shady conditions as my eyes track to the edge of the lenses. But overall I like how they perform; even in twilight. Also, apparently Nikon might be or already has discontinued these? So I feel quite lucky that Adorama got this little kit with cleaners and harness into my hands for list price.May 2021
I've spent several weeks comparing these binoculars side-by-side with Vortex Razor HD binoculars. In everything but the dimmest light conditions the image quality of these binoculars is equal to or better than the Razors (which retail at 2x the cost of these Nikons). The field width of these binoculars is among the best available in an 8x42 binocular. The depth of focus is excellent. These two attributes taken together make it easier to locate birds in the bins after finding them with the naked eye.The image is very sharp on center. It appears that the compromise in performance to achieve good breadth and depth of field is in edge to edge sharpness. The sharpness does drop off a bit toward the edge of the field of view. It appears that the compromise in performance to achieve good breadth and depth of field is in edge to edge sharpness. The sharpness does drop off a bit toward the edge of the field of view. Central sharpness is excellent. The softening is noticeable but not objectionable.Image brightness in the daytime is very good. As the sun sets and the light begins to fade, the more expensive Vortex binoculars begin to shine. The Razors do maintain contrast better in low light conditions.I also compared these to the Nikon Monarch 5 binoculars. The wider field of view, sharper image quality, and overall greater brightness easily justify the extra investment over the 5's. Overall these are by far the best birding binoculars in their price category. You'd have to spend several times the money to find a better pair of binoculars. No wonder these are regularly picked by birding magazines as the best value winner.
I waited for these binoculars with a mixture of anticipation and anxiety - both from the description and from info on the net not knowing how well they would really be constructed or how they would actually perform in the outdoors. My expectations in the event were far exceeded. I have been using them to watch rare birds and survey wild flowers in the nature reserves of southern Portugal and the views have been really, really good. These binoculars are not only easy to use but are durable yet light in weight. They are also mist proof and waterproof, so are ideal for these often wet coastal habitats.
Love these...I own Vortex Razor HD 10x42 and Minox BL 8x44HD.(latest version of both)Nikon’s a gift to my daughter for birding.I have no experience with the heavy hitters Leica/Zeiss/Swarovski.What I will say, is that these have a very wide engulfing view that is very, very clear. Focus wheel is just right. Eyecups function and feel great.Compared to what I own and use, these are equal to my eyes.My other two made in Japan and Germany respectively. The Vortex Razor’s at $ The Minox $ or so.The Monarch 7 ...Made in China.Summary: Excellent!!! Well done Nikon.
These are not very expensive (vs. the EDG line) but seem like a very good set. 22.9 ounces is fairly light for an 8 X 42. we like the wide field of view of 420 feet and ability to close focus to see something only 8.2 feet away. They seem very sturdy. The curved body fits in my large hands and also my wife's very small hands. The Nikon Monarch family has three levels: 3, 5 and 7. The FOV on the 7 is much wider than the other two, The provided strap is wide and comfortable- but it takes a while to get it attached with the provided lens cap. It turns out that we have a lot of birds in our yard (including a red-tailed hawk) and that is what we have been watching so far. We bought these on line at a $100 savings from the store price. These were a step up from my first "bins," Bushnell Legend, 8x42, purchased 13 years ago for around $150. Nothing wrong with those. Served me well for birding, but I was intrigued by the idea of a better pair. Wasn't sure the increased investment in the Nikons would be worth it--but it was. The Nikons provide markedly brighter and sharper viewing. This was evident during a recent visit to a nearby lake to look for some uncommon migrant gulls. The weather was overcast, and it was late in the day, so lighting was not good. And yet, could still pick out key field marks on moving birds. A good investment.
