A fantastic lens that makes good compromises.

This lens does sacrifice some image quality aspects to hit a low price and focal length of 300mm. My assessments are all done on a focus calibrated D810. Wide open contrast is below average but not poor and sharpness is OK. You really do need to stop the lens down to get really good sharpness, especially at 300mm. The extended lens barrel at 300mm does have a slight wiggle when pressure is put on it, but in normal use it's perfectly straight. That's really all the bad I can say about this lens, all other aspects are wonderful. Focus is fast and accurate, it's light weight, and the VR works well. Choose this lens if you value versatility and price over ultimate performance.

An excellent lens

This will sound strange but I hadn't bought a new lens for my D7500 in quite a while, rented a few for special occasions but never bought. When this lens came I thought there was a problem with it since it was extremely tight trying to put it on. Even called the help line but no one offered that opinion. Took it to my daughter who has the same camera and she popped it on, admitting it was tight but that's the way new lenses are. I used it to photograph a horse jumping show over the 4th and am very pleased with the reach and fast focus. I especially like the option of the sport selector on the lens. Im glad I tested it with her camera and didn't return it. It is definitely a big improvement over the kit lens the camera came with.

Appreciated upgrade.

Coming from a same focal length zoom Tamaron kit lens. Right out of the box the build quality is impressive. Little more heft, but not objectionably so. Focus was a little off, but very nice sharpness once I calibrated it. Also a very small amount of chromatic aberration at the long end, but big improvement over the Tamaron. VR, so far is amazing. Shooting at 200mm, 1/60th of a second hand held and getting very good results. Autofocus also seems much more responsive, more decisive than the Tamaron. I personally love the zoom range for shooting events, sports, portraiture. So while the Tamaron was a good start for my frugal, early years, this is a much appreciated upgrade in all areas, now that the above details are more meaningful to me. Great value for the money. ... MoreComing from a same focal length zoom Tamaron kit lens. Right out of the box the build quality is impressive. Little more heft, but not objectionably so. At last, a 70-300 zoom that doesn't disappoint at 300 mm
11 September 2019

Up to now, all the 70-300 mm zooms I've used gave good quality images up to 200 mm and maybe a bit past that, but at 300 mm you got images that were acceptable but not up to the kind of sharpness you can get from a 300 mm prime lens. This new 70-300 zoom from Nikon is not like that. It gives very sharp images at all focal lengths, including 300 mm. I'd rate the performance at 300 mm as very close to my AF-S Nikkor 300 mm f/4D prime lens, which is very sharp. That lens is still a bit sharper, but not by much, and it also has more contrast than the 70-300 has at 300 mm, -but that's something you can tweak in post production and is therefore not that much of an issue. At 200 mm and below this zoom has very good contrast. This new 70-300 is sharp at all focal lengths even wide open, -although you might want to stop it down by 1/3 to 2/3 of a stop to get the best results, and maybe a little more to bring the corners up to the center sharpness. But overall this lens delivers very impressive results at all focal lengths and apertures. The AF-P autofocusing is very fast and nearly silent. The fly by wire manual focus takes a little getting used to, -you're not actually changing the lens focus directly, but instead you're setting focus via the AF-P motor and the focus ring is just an encoder telling it what to do. Focusing this way is very smooth and precise, and that's what counts. The VR works well. I've been able to get sharp photos hand held at shutter speeds as low as 1/15th at 300 mm, and 1/5th of a second at 70 mm. The VR does have the annoying habit of noticeably re-framing your shots when it works, -for instance, a centered subject may turn out not to be in the center in the final photo, but I've seen this in other Nikon VR lenses and this lens seems to be one of the better ones in that regard.I have only two small complaints about this lens. The AF-P motor resets the lens focus to infinity when you turn the camera body off instead of holding the last focus setting like all the other Nikon AF lenses I've used. And since the manual focus is completely electronic there's no focus distance scale. It would have been nice if Nikon had added a small LCD or LED display to the lens to show the focus distance the way Zeiss did with some of their AF lenses, but that would probably have increased the price.Be aware that there can be incompatibility issues with this lens and some earlier Nikon DSLR bodies due to the AF-P autofocusing and E type electromagnetic aperture. Most current Nikon DSLRs are compatible with AF-P and E, but you should check the Nikon USA website as there are charts there listing which cameras are or are not compatible with those two features. I'm using this lens with a D500, D7100, and D7200, and all those bodies are compatible, although the D7100/7200 required a firmware update.By the way, this lens works very well on DX as well as FX, and if you're currently using a compatible DX body you might want to consider buying this lens instead of one of the two Nikkor DX 70-300s as that would give you the ability to later upgrade to FX without getting a new lens.I highly recommend this lens!

Fantastic Lens

As a general rule, I don't buy anything Keen Rockwell doesn't rate highly. A few years ago, I purchased this lens in a DX format and the photos were soft and disappointing. I tried again, buying this one in the FX format and could not be happier. The images are sharp, all through the different ranges, not only on my D850 but also my D500.This is my new "walking around" lens and unless I need a specialty lens for something, it stays mounted to my D850. I finally upgraded to this when it went on sale
22 May 2021

I have the older version AF-S of this lens and have wanted to get this updated, faster-focusing AF-P version for a few years now. When it went on sale I jumped on it. It's not only faster and quieter to focus but the optical performance is also improved at the long end.NOTE, AF-P lenses only auto-focus on newer camera bodies, check compatibility. My intended use for such a lens is mostly landscape, close-up and maybe a little bit of wildlife and bird photography where the faster focusing is very useful.I did some quick testing with it on my Z6 using an FTZ adapter. Pretty satisfied pairing with a Z6
13 June 2022

I'm a hobbyist doing some birding, and bought it with the FTZ adaptor since the Z6 doesn't have a lot of lenses yet.I'd say the autofocus is slightly slower than with my Z6 kit lens (28-70mm). It sometimes struggles at 300mm, but it seems to be happening in low light situations, and it still finds focus after a couple of seconds.Of course, its not awesome for low light, but its manageable using a higher ISO. In the forest, I usually manage 1/125 at ISO500.I'd say its a more than acceptable beginners wildlife lens.

I bought this lens this week to use with a cropped sensor D3500. I've been testing it daily, and I'm blown away by it (blessed be the gentleman from B&H who encouraged me to step up to this full frame lens from the DX version I had in mind, he knew what he was talking about.)The lens build is fantastic; the materials feel absolutely pro level to the touch and the huge zoom ring is not only absolutely smooth, but a pleasure to use. Nevertheless, AF-P also means that prospective buyers must check for camera compatibility. If your camera model is AF-P compatible, then you're in luck, this is one of the best prosumer lenses Nikon has ever made for both FX and DX bodies.Somewhere, I read a couple of reviews mentioning that this lens is not good in low light conditions. With all due respect to these people, if you can't get great low light shots with this lens, most likely it means you don't know how to properly take photographs in low light. The only exception to this I can think of are photographers who need to shoot fast moving sports or wildlife subjects with a shallow DOF—or people who, for some inconceivable reason, insist on shooting everything ISO 100 or lower in low light, at full aperture, handheld, and still expect perfect sharpness (???) People in these exceptional circumstances do need to go for the super expensive, top-of-the-line 70-200mm f/2.8.I've attached 6 photos I took last night from the High Line in Chelsea, NYC using this lens on a Nikon D3500 between 8:41 and 8:56 pm, all handheld with VR in Normal, the Empire State Building being the furthest away subject 1.1 miles (1.77km) away. Most of the images were shot at f/11 with Auto ISO ranging between 100 and 6400, and I've uploaded them straight from the camera, no post-production of any kind. After coming home and seeing the results on my screen, I was so happy I could dance. This lens is worth every single penny I paid for it.

Very Happy Customer
19 July 2022

I recently purchased the Nikon AF-P 70-300mm lens for my Nikon D810 as I do a lot of hiking (and occasional street photography) and have missed many opportunities to capture wildlife or other shots simply by being too far away. I lamented for a while since most good zoom lenses are priced out of my budget range. When I realized this lens was not only something I could afford but also had great reviews, I jumped at buying it!I am so glad I did. I have only had it for a couple of weeks and have not yet taken it out for a proper workout. But I have used it in a few situations already and am very pleased by the quality of image it produces. I lamented for a while since most good zoom lenses are priced out of my budget range. When I realized this lens was not only something I could afford but also had great reviews, I jumped at buying it!I am so glad I did. It is very light, which is nice. I also find the VR is quite good when extending the zoom.Overall, I am plenty happy with this purchase! I am excited to get out on the hiking trail very soon to really give this baby a proper initiation, but I have every confidence already that I will not lose any opportunities that I had missed before!

Wonderful Lens at this Price Point
14 September 2022

I had the opportunity to use this lens for the first time outdoors this past weekend and I was not disappointed. I have a Nikon D500 camera and felt like this lens paired well with the body. Focusing was quick--not lightening fast, but VERY quick. The zoom range is nice and I was able to capture some beautiful shots. The lens is relatively lightweight (less than I expected). At this price point, it is difficult to imagine finding a better lens. The B&H shopping experience, customer service, shipping, etc. was awesome as always.
