Nikon AF-S 24-70mm f/2.8E Ed VR NIKKOR Lens
This Nikon AF-S NIKKOR 24-70 mm f2.8E ED VR Wide-angle Zoom Lens is great for taking shots of architecture landscapes and other large or distant subjects. Image stabilisation for steadier shots Nikons VR Vibration Reduction system effectively counteracts camera shake so that you can shoot at shutter speeds up to four stops slower than you normally would. Take crisp detailed photos of your subjects using this great feature. A Silent Wave Motor which works at up to 1.5 times the speed of that used in the Nikon 24-70mm f2.8G allows for much quieter autofocusing. This is an invaluable feature when you need precision and dont want to disturb your subject. The lens also offers a sturdier design that helps maintain better stability. Precision optics With its aspherical ED glass element the Nikon AF-S NIKKOR 24-70 mm Lens is able to offset chromatic aberrations and other unwanted visual artifacts so that your images are purer and truer to the original scene. Light fall-off is drastically reduced by this innovative element which also allows for full resolution levels at peripheral positions in each frame. Weather resistant The Nikon AF-S NIKKOR f2.8E Wide-angle Zoom Lens is fully weather sealed with a fluorine coating on its front and rear elements to actively repel water dirt and dust without affecting image quality. Cleaning the lens glass is much easier thanks to this coating which reduces the risk of damage while youre wiping. Achieve stunningly clear and richly detailed images with the Nikon AF-S NIKKOR 24-70 mm f2.8E ED VR Wide-angle Zoom Lens which is ideal for larger subjects and scenery.

Review is based on using this lens with a D850.One of the reasons I bought this lens is for the VR, and I'm not disappointed. Coming from the original 24 - 70mm f/2.8, Iread countless reviews before making a decision. Most of them were of the opinion that a competing lens at $400 less was a better value, and provided quality images, so I tried it. It isn't in the sameleague. The Nikon lens produces better color, is sharper, and VR works better. You can read all the reviews, charts, and graphs and drive yourself nuts, but where the rubber meets the road is in processing RAW files. And that is where the images from this lens shine. SOC RAW images are exactly what you want and need little work. The depthin each file allows you to process to phenomenal quality. ... MoreReview is based on using this lens with a D850.One of the reasons I bought this lens is for the VR, and I'm not disappointed. If you're in the 'da more color, da better' camp, you can push these images to cartoonish before losing shadow details and subtitles. Contrast and color accuracy are terrific.Back to the VR. I have a few lenses with VR, but for whatever reason, it seems to work best on this lens. The D850 is not very forgiving. I haven't measured how many 'stops' this lens is good for, but I can tell you that at 70mm, 1/30 second, the images are crisp. I even got a few at second that were good. An added benefit is that it allowsthe D850 to be used for video. I know many are going to mirrorless with IBIS, but this lens does a good job and provides nice stable video with all the color depth and sharpness found in still images. If the D850's autofocus was better suited for video . . . . .Conclusion. At the new price, this lens is a no-brainer.

This lens replaced an older 28-120 f/4 NIKKOR lens that started acting up. I am so glad the old lens was crashing because this lens outshines it big-time. Although the maximum focal length is shorter, just 70mm, it is long enough for everyday use and picking up the wider 24mm (over 28mm) is a big advantage. The faster speed (f/2.8 vs f/4) significantly expands the opportunities for hand-holding the lens. The focussing mechanism is a gigantic leap forward over the 28-120 f/4. It is super fast and accurate. This is the lens I leave on my camera. An interesting observation I made and hope to learn about is that the lens (which is longer than my old 28-120 to begin with) is shortest at 70mm. First new lens in 20 years. To go along with a D850 purchased about 2 months ago. Did hours of resolution testing on my cache of Nikon primes from 24mm up to the first 300MM ED. Big differences were corner resolution and contrast improvement. However, at 5.6, 8 and 11 these older prime lenses are pretty good. The 200MM medical macro and the 55mm f/3.5 macro are especially good. VR is fantastic, shots at slower speeds than I ever would try before. Only downside is big and heavy.

The lens fits my grip and the narrow lens barrel is comfortable to hold and the wide rubberized rings are easy to adjust. The 2-level vibration adjustment is amazing. The lens is pixel peep sharp from f2.8 to f8 at zoom range 24mm to 70mm, except at 50mm that falls off at f2.8. There is a small degradation in sharpness from f11 to f22. This lens is made to be used wide open in natural light! There is noticeable chromatic aberration in out-of-focus high contrast areas, with near areas shifting to red, and far areas shifting to blue. There is an internal focus shift on f-stop down that happens after auto-focus is triggered. The SLR view through the mirror and prism is normally done with the lens wide open at f2.8. When the shutter button is pressed the lens is auto-focused, then the lens is stopped down to the working aperture and the picture is taken. When the lens is stopped-down, the focus changes slightly. In practice the focus shift on f-stop down will not effect portrait work because the shift on THIS lens is linear and moves away from the focus point. In other words - if the subject's iris is in focus, the lens will keep that iris clear from f2.8 to f16 because of the increased depth of field. Clever optical engineering. There is some focus shift while zooming the lens that will effect the lens in manual focus mode and will require refocusing upon a change to focal length. All zoom lenses in this category change their point of focus on focal length change, but it is best to keep this in mind while in manual mode.
Bought this lens because I use a mid-range zoom more than any other lens and I wanted the Vibration Reduction because I've got no choice but to hand hold the camera for most of my shots. It's flawlessly sharp and the VR is incredible. If I half depress the shutter button and deliberately shake the camera the image stays locked in the same place in the viewfinder or on the screen. I can move the camera side to side more than it seems possible for the lens to stabilise and the image stays locked in place. To get maximum sharpness set the camera on one of the sharpest Picture Control settings. Landscape or Vivid, for example. If the camera is set on Portrait it will deliberately soften the image. I'm very pleased with it. Wish I'd bought it a few years ago to be quite ... MoreBought this lens because I use a mid-range zoom more than any other lens and I wanted the Vibration Reduction because I've got no choice but to hand hold the camera for most of my shots. I've owned and used the standard 24-70mm 2.8 lens for many years. It was my go to lens for most of my professional work. Over time it developed "zoom grind", so I decided to buy a new one. When presented with the choice of the standard lens or the VR version, i decided to "upgrade" to the VR model. So far it has naturally been everything i loved about to original and more! It's slightly larger and heavier, but not nearly as much as many online/YouTube reviews led me to believe. If you can carry around the original, then you can handle this one too. If you're worried about the weight of your lens, neither 24-70 is right for you. Go buy a prime lens instead. The Vibration Reduction has already proved itself worth the money in my wedding work. I've developed shaky hands over the years, but now i can confidently shoot around 1/50th of a second (when i have to) whereas i dare not go below 1/100th with the original (I could go down to 1/60th but it took a great deal of concentration and effort.)I'm not sure if there is any difference in the glass used, but I have zero complaints about sharpness. Like i said, i have no complaints about the OG 24-70, but the images I've created (from portraits to landscapes) have been absolutely beautiful, and dare i say just a tad bit "more better".I've also heard people claim the auto focus is "too loud". But i find that to be a complete myth (at least for photography purposes). The active vibration reduction is noticeably quieter than the 70-200mm 2.8.Whether or not it is worth the extra money depends on your budget. But if you can afford it, I would absolutely get this lens over the non VR version.
I had the previous model of this lens, the one without the VR. Since I used this lens so much and my previous lens was over 15 years old, I went ahead and splurged and upgraded to the VR. The VR is amazing, and I mean amazing. I'm in my 70s, my hand shakes a bit, and I take a lot of low light photos. I was amazed that I can hand hold down to 1/20th of a second and the photo is clear at 100 resolution! In addition, as with the last lens, the adjustment is fast and with crystal clarity. I'm very happy I upgraded to the newer model!
We used this lens for a short vacation to New England. It worked very well in low light and bright environments. The focal range was excellent for our travel and portrait photography. Of course the trade off is weight. It’s a beast, but still possible to use comfortably. Worked very well with our D750. Would definitely rent it again for important events or trips. It came with a nice carrying case and lens hood.
Fresh out of the box and the differences are very noticeable. I purchased this one to replace the one that I bought 7 years ago and has been my workhorse for the entire period. First, the 82mm front element tells me that this is going to be different. I attached my mandatory UV filter and then the D800 body and the MarkII R2 trigger to the hot shoe and we were off. The focusing is extremely fast and quiet. Took a couple of shots of one of my orchids that I usually use as test subjects and the difference was apparent. This was a good move. Fast, crisp, quiet and sharp. No regrets on the purchase at thos point. The older model will be sent in for cleaning and go into the bag as a backup. I do tons of events and I am sure that I will be updating this review. If you can ... MoreFresh out of the box and the differences are very noticeable. This was an update, replacement for older version of this lens. I am a Nikon shooter, who matches lenses to my Nikon cameras. This lens is perfect for my D750/850 cameras. It works well with my D7000/D90 DX models as well. The only draw back for most folks, might be it is heavier than the cameras. But man, it is great through all of the Fstops. Crisp/sharp, and the dynamic colors on my D850/750 is off the charts. even though it is heavy, I love it. I only wish I could find a lens ring so I could mount it to my tripods. This lens has no equal in my view in the 24-70 lens range.
