Not a lot I can say that hasn't been said, but I will confirm what others have said. When I first took it out and tried it in the yard, it didn't seem to focus any faster than my 200-500 - which was one of the reasons I'd purchased this. I've concluded that the light wasn't good enough on that overcast late afternoon. I took it down to the lake where I like to shoot, and it was amazing! Fast focus, and frame-filling 600mm. When I looked at the shots on the computer, I was even more pleased. I walk up to four miles with this thing (okay, walking is my exercise, so that part isn't unusual), but just carry it at my side with a Peak Design slide strap, and swing it up for shots! It's that easy to manage!

I finally took the dive and bought this magnificent piece of engineering art after years of lusting. Even more so when the new E version came out. The Nikkor 600mm f/4E FL ED VR is the best lens I've ever used and I have a lot of Nikkor Gold-Ring N lenses, including the recently introduced 400mm f/2.8E. The deep and subtle color rendition, bokeh, flair resistance, light weight and spectacular clarity/ sharpness make it stand out. The ability to point it directly in the direction of the sun and still have ample contrast and flair resistance is truly impressive. Autofocus is virtually instant. VR works extremely well as I've achieved tack sharp test images at 1/60th of a second hand-held with static objects. My copy doesn't seem to need any calibration to my body as ... First I want to say thank you for trusting a customer with this lens for an extra 4 days before I actually rented it. That kind of service is above and beyond what I expected and I'd be happy to tell anyone that. As a matter of fact, I did tell everyone in the photo tour group on my recent trip to Yellowstone how you sent me then lens early.It allowed me some time to get a bit familiar with using a long lens such as the 600.The lens is sharp but it weighs a ton. I lugged it around Yellowstone in the snow and it was really a pain--NOT your fault! Thank you Nikon for making a heavy-weight 600mm lens...Another person on the tour had the Sony version of the 600mm and it was half the weight!Otherwise great lens and terrific service from Lensrental!
This lens is nothing short of amazing for wildlife photographers! Having owned the previous model of this lens, I have to say this new version is a much welcome upgrade. The biggest thing you notice is the 3lb weight savings and the balance. If you?re walking or hiking around all day with a tripod every little bit of weight savings is welcomed. Sharpness and focus are lighting fast as to be expected with Nikons super telephotos. I also love the new upgraded single piece lens hood vs the older 2 piece design. This lens lives on my D850 and Gitzo tripod. Throw in a Wimberley Gimbal WH-200 and you have the best wildlife set up ever. Highly recommended to any serious advanced / professional photographer.
I have been an internationally recognised bird photographer for over 20 years now, working in the tropical jungles of Ecuador, Colombia and Peru, and i would say that this lens (and D850 (ISO!) combo!) makes my work at least 50% easier -The WEIGHT is a major deal, even though i didnt think it would make such a difference, it is so much easier to carry and use on the tripod in low-light rainforest conditions,plus the VR is incredible - a whole new ballgame after the previous lens!! Shooting at 1/100 hand held.. who of us older guys could even imagine that!Coupled with the weight deal is the BALANCE.. it just feels right!!Then the AF is just that much faster and exacting for small birds, and the way it works with the D850 is outrageous for tracking moving ... I did love my 500mm f4 VR prime but many of my bird shots were cropped more than I'd have liked and this extra reach makes that much of a difference.The lens, when on a D4 feels lighter than my 500 used to. Faster than my 500mm f4 was. The tracking seems to be excellent but I've not used it much yet. Pictures I have taken have been sharp too.I can put this lens in to my carry on luggage and it fits within the length restrictions for airlines. (maybe not the weight but this is not going in the hold) I did this by replacing the useless bulky lens hood with a bespoke third party lens cap made in the US.For use with my Gimbal head I replaced the existing foot with the foot that I was using for my 500mm. The foot works but is a little too short so if you loosen the tripod head then the front of the lens dips but until the company who made the foot produce their new longer foot (apparently in June 16) this will do.In short... I'm a little short of cash for a while but I've got a smile on my face whenever I'm out there.

DXO has not reviewed the 600FL or 500FL yet, but it's obvious based on tests of the 400FL that these new designs are about shedding pounds and that optical performance is equivalent. This 600FL is about 3 pounds lighter than the previous 600/4, 2 pounds lighter than the old 400/2.8, and even weighs 1/5th of a pound less than the outgoing 500/4. It's not just total weight, however, because the new design is much less end heavy and more balanced as a whole. Can you handhold it? Well, I have been handholding the 10-pound 400/2.8 for years so this 8-pound 600 feels dramatically easier to handle in every regard. It's still physically large and requires good technique but since weight has been my #1 sore spot (literally) regarding super telephotos I pre-ordered this lens as soon as I saw the technical specifications. The price hurts but the FL primes are significantly easier to handle, carry, mount on support equipment, handhold, and travel with. If those things are deciding factors for you, it's an investment you won't regret.

When it is functional the images are superb by any standard. I compete in photo competitions, consistently scoring among the highest. My issue is quality of construction/design. The lens is now in Nikon's repair department's hands for the third time! It will not auto-focus with any of my F or Z mount bodies. I am not saying don't purchase Nikon products. It's a little more expensive too, but to be honest it's worth it. Built to last and worked to death, looked after this lens will last a lifetime, or many, many years if worked day in day out. I do use a mono pod and tripod when using this lens but I can hand hold it and get tack sharp images, better than the older variant.
