This lens deserves more praise than it deserves and I honestly think this is a very under-rated lens. I have used this lens exclusively for shooting macro photography and I have captured a wide range of subjects from water/oil drops to arthropods. Keep in mind, it has a very shallow dept of field (Refer my butterfly shot) but definitely tack sharp.I am not a professional but more an hobbyist and here are some of my observations on how to get maximum effect from this lens.1) Get real close to your subjects. That is key for Macro photography. I can't stress on this enough2) Use a speedlite/ring flash for extreme sharpness. It makes a world of difference with and without flash even if you shoot in broad daylight3) Use photoshop elements at a minimum for editing ... MoreThis lens deserves more praise than it deserves and I honestly think this is a very under-rated lens. I purchased this for use with the ES-1 slide copy attachment on a D7500 body (also sometimes on a Z50/FTZ). It is excellent for this purpose. Sharpness, linearity and freedom from color fringing and vignetting are great wide open, although I usually stop down to f/5.6 or f/8 anyway as insurance against bowed or warped slides. As a general-purpose macro, close focus working distance is very tight and subject lighting can be a challenge. I prefer the 85mm or 105mm micro for general closeups. However the 40mm f/2.8G doubles as a decent general-purpose normal prime. At f/2.8 it's not super fast, and its autofocus motor speed is modest, but it's tack sharp even wide open and not too heavy. I don't have the 35mm f/1.8 DX but I think maybe with this on hand, I won't need one.

Purchased for macro work, delivers tack sharp photos. I sold my old Nikon camera using the pics obtained with this lens. Nice bokeh wide open, and good low light performance. Good walk around lens and lightweight. Recommended.

It was a great lens compared the the Nikon D60 lens that it came with. When taking pictures of things up close (i.e. a flower) it would be really crisp in the middle but the petals of the flower would be automatically blurry. If you tried to take a picture with the whole flower in the middle, it wouldn't be as crisp.Overall it was a great lens, but it was my bad that the lens I ordered wasn't exactly what I wanted. I'm going to look to rent a different macro/micro lens from them! Love their service and the idea is just brilliant!!
If this macro lens was to be rated solely in terms of value for money it would clearly be a top choice. I purchased it primarily for use in a film scanning setup with my old, reliable D7000 and the combo works superbly. This 40mm jewel renders tack sharp, balanced contrast images that, frankly, surprised me considering its modest price. Nikon has apparently not compromised the optics at all in an effort to produce an affordable yet excellent product. Sure, the lens body sports a fair amount of plastic and its focusing barrel is less than silky smooth in operation when compared with a ruggedized "pro" instrument costing three times as much, but for "informal" use as a normal or macro picture taker, I doubt that you can do better.
This little lens worked awesome on a recent trip. Close-ups and real macro photos of plants came out crisp and vibrant. Autofocus was unreliable up close (but I expected that), and I would prefer to not have to turn the focus ring as far to get AF to deactivate. As a portrait or general use lens, pictures were also clear with a pleasant bokeh. Some reviews I saw complained about the focal length being too short, but for me it's not an issue as I don't really take bug pictures. For plants, food, and assorted other (mostly) stationary subjects the focal length wasn't an issue.Overall, this lens worked incredibly for what I needed. Would buy again even if there was an extra $100 on the price tag.

There are a lot of excellent photographers out there with legacy Nikon glass that do not care for these modern, lightweight plastic lenses. Being a chap of a certain age, I appreciate the weight/cost saving and, without prejudice the excellent optical performance this lens can produce. In particular, I had been researching a suitable micro lens to partner with the ES-1 slide copier. It seems to be a well-kept secret that you can very successfully copy sides/B&W negs with a DX camera, although Nikon insists that the more expensive ES-2 Camera kit (ideally suited for use with the Nikon D850) plus extension tubes and a 60mm micro Nikkor is the only way to go. The digitization results I have obtained far exceed any flatbed scanner I have used, and you have the option of producing a camera RAW file that will allow further manipulation in Photoshop.
Got a used version of this lens for long exposure landscape photography with my D7500. First off, condition was perfect. Even with a 10 stop ND filter, images are as sharp as a tack. The distance scale is a real plus for focusing. Great buy, especially for the price.
This lens rocks for inside use, especially on people. I'm talking it looks like professional photograper photos. But I've tried to use it on flowers and outdoor photography and can't get the correct settings. (If I could it would get 5 stars) On outdoor pics everything is either washed out, overly vivid on flowers to where they look fake or just not focused well. I would say if you want indoor photos of people this is a great lens for that. I'm a new Dslr/Mirroless user so maybe I just need practice but I'm pleased I got it for indoors. I have it attached to a Nikon Z50 camera I bought a few weeks before I purchased this Nikkor40 mm f/2.8 macro lens, so I had to buy a Z mount to use the f2.8 lens on my camera. I'm pleased with it.
