Excellent Weight to Quality Considerations

I shoot for skiing, snowboarding and mountaineering periodicals and winter sports production companies. My focus is on big mountain, backcountry and extreme sports. I've been using this lens for almost nine years. Have shot thousands of RAW files with it, first on a D800 and the last year on a Z7. I've shot location and studio portraits with it, I've shot editorial location, and I've shot architecture and interiors with it, and been on very rough construction sites with it all day. I even shot a 'Gladiator Run' all afternoon in 100+ heat. I have shot fine art landscape with it. I work all my files in LR Classic and finish in PS. I'm attaching a shot from 2020 of pecan trees in the winter. Sharpness is MORE than excellent. The new 24-200 Z is supposed to be even better, when it's finally available.

Conclusion: the 24-70 is the best lens, but it weighs 1210g (with hood), vs. 805g for the 24-120, and 534g for the 24-85. It's huge. If you need f/2.8, and if you're not going to be moving around a lot, then go for the 24-70. But if you're going to be walking around with the camera, go with the 24-120. It's nearly as sharp as the 24-70, but it's significantly lighter.

I had been considering this Nikon 24-120mm f/4 lens since purchasing a Nikon Df a little over a year ago, and I've been monioring it on Nikon's refurbished products web site. Research performed online revealed generally high ratings for this lens, so it was a no-brainer to keep considering this for purchase. But the regular retail price even for a Nikon factory refurbished model is high, so I decided to wait for a killer deal from a reputable Nikon reseller. When I searched eBay recently I discovered prices for this refurbished lens that were significantly below Nikon's site, but I was hesitant to act under the theory that "if it seems to good to be true, it probably is." When I searched eBay recently I discovered prices for this refurbished lens that were significantly below Nikon's site, but I was hesitant to act under the theory that "if it seems to good to be true, it probably is." After checking prices on eBay regularly for the past three weeks, I located very reasonable prices offered by Buydig. My decision to purchase was triggered by an email I received from eBay over the weekend, offering an additional savings of $80 on a refurbished 24-120mm from Buydig. Of course I had read the reviews on eBay that warned about products shipped slowly, or arrived damaged or inoperable. But after receiving the email offering the additional savings, I placed my order. My order was entered on Saturday, and the lens was delivered to FedEx on Sunday. Subsequent tracking reports indicated the product was in transit on Monday, and was delivered on Tuesday. Upon arrival the outer package was in excellent condition, and the box inside containing the lens was packed identically to shipments of refurbished products I've purchased directly from Nikon's web site. My package excluded an instruction booklet, and front and rear lens caps -- while perfectly fine -- were not made by Nikon. I was delighted to find an official 90 day warranty issued by Nikon for my lens, same as I typically receive when I purchase refurbished lenses directly from Nikon. The overall condition of the lens seems perfect, with clean, clear glass and a new appearing exterior. The zoom is a tiny bit sticky, which I think will smooth-out over time with usage, and the focus and VR function appear to work similarly to my also refurbished Nikon 28-300mm lens. The lens has a US serial number, and the markings on the lens' exterior are clear and easy to read. I've taken over 100 pictures since opening the box, and images are clear, sharp and perfectly usable... even when taken indoors at night without a flash. Exterior shots taken from my window overlooking a typical New York City street are identical in overall quality to my Nikon 28-300 and close in quality to my Nikon 24-70 f/2.8. My plan is to keep this lens on my Nikon Df as my "go-to, general walkaround" lens, just as I keep the 28-300 on my other Nikon Df. The 24-120 is slightly lighter and shorter than my 28-300, but doesn't have the lens creep that's evident in the longer 28-300, and certainly won't be a problem to carry around for a day's worth of shooting. In a nutshell, my new refurbished 24-120mm completely meets my expectations. But my shopping experience with Buydig was exceptionally positive, and a real eye-opener. Based on my experience, I highly recommend both the Nikon 24-120mm f/4 VR as well as Buydig.

Great all rounder but too many compromises

I bought this lens as a travel lens for my D750 so I didn't need to cart a bag full of lenses around with me. My current go to lens is my treasured 24-70 F2.8 but this doesn't have the range and is a big lens to cart around. I did plenty of research before taking the plunge, ignoring the concerns regarding barrel distortion and vignetting and decided this would be ideal as a travel/general purpose lens that I could leave on the camera for most shooting situations. Unfortunately, results have not been so good, even with the in camera lens correction activated. Both distortion and vignetting are intrusive, particularly at extremes of aperture/focus and need a lot of post processing to bring to an acceptable level. The complex optical formula of 17 elements in 13 groups with two ED, three aspherical elements and Nano Crystal Coat all contribute to great performance throughout the zoom range. I am happy to add this lens to my collection. Very applicable cost for this type of quality lens. My best regards for everybody.

Long ago, in a trailer park far away, I owned a first generation 24-120 f/3.5-5.6D. With my beloved F100, I shot a good many beach portraits and weddings. There was a silly Canon period during which I foolishly parted with my Nikon equipment. Now I'm starting over with a D610. Having played with the new 24-120 f/4 a friend owned, I knew I had found love again. After putting it through its paces over a weekend, I shot a few paying jobs with it. Handles beautifully, I like the balance and the fact that it feels substantial. The only complaint I can come up with is that (as long-range zooms tend to) it is somewhat subject to flare and haze. The solution is easy, don't point it straight into the sun, stupid. This Nikon 24-120 came well protected and in a white box with pouch and manual. Everything was wrapped in original Nikon wrap and appears brand new. I have used the lens for about an hour on my new Nikon D850 and the images are tack sharp with great color. The lens is made in Thailand (as is the D850 ). The lens serial number is a non-US (grey market) number, but that doesn't make any difference, it is the exact same lens as those sold in the US and this price is 50% less. Therefore, it doesn't come with the Nikon warranty, but you can buy an aftermarket warranty and Mr Photo has a one year warranty. I needed a "walk around" lens for travel as my "holy trinity" f 2.8 lenses are way too heavy to carry all day on a trip. This range is perfect. I've been shooting people events with this lens for several years. It has never let me down. Tack sharp, excellent color & contrast. Recently I tried the 24-70mm f/2.8 VR zoom just to compare. I could not find any case where that lens made superior images. It costs twice as much. It's heavier. It wasn't as fast to bring up, compose and shoot as this smaller/lighter lens with it's longer range. For me there is no need to look further. If you'll be banging into other photographers on a news assignment or hiking through tropical humidity, get the 24-70 f/2.8 VR. It's probably more durable. But I'm retired. I take care of my gear. In this environment, the 24-120 f/4 can't be beat.

I needed a lens to get a single picture for a book project. I'd be photographing from a boat, from varying distances, hoping for the best. None of my lenses had image stabilization, or the right focal lengths, so I had to do some research. Everything pointed to this lens. I rented it for the day, and was impressed. The autofocus and image stabilization worked perfectly. I was in a small inflatable pontoon motorboat in the East River, shooting handheld with a d800, and had no issues at all with motion blur. The winning picture was shot at 86mm, f8, 1/160s. It's not quite as sharp as the other images in the project (made on a tripod, with more expensive lenses) but is more than good enough, and would look good printed 20x30 or so. This wasn't an issue for me-there was just sky there-but if you need a high degree of sharpness across the whole image field, this lens may not be the best choice. I owned the 24-70 f2.8 for a couple of years, and while this was not my favorite lens in the world, it definitely outperforms the 24-105 in corner-corner sharpness. Alas, it isn't stabilized, so would have been lousy on the boat. Overall, I think the 24-120 would be a brilliant lens for someone who likes to walk around with an all-purpose zoom (this is what all these other reviewers are saying ...). And it's good for people like me who have a specialized use that doesn't depend so much on corner sharpness. But in this case, maybe rent it.
