I brought this lens and it came with autofocus issues. Returned it to my local store and they have to send it of for testing for a refund that I am still waiting on. I thought this might just be a one off and a bad lens so I ordered another one while still waiting for refund to have another broken lens delivered. I'm now nearly £300 out of pocket. I would love to know how cex test these lenses before buying. Save your money and time, buy from a reputable camera shop.

I bought this lens for portraits on my DX D7500 body. It really is the only good portrait option for a Nikon crop sensor body. On test shots I found the lens to be just a bit soft wide open. By 2.8, the lens is very sharp. I was hoping for better. The lens will likely work very well for me for portraits and certainly at higher f-stops for everything else, and I expect the lens to be a valuable part of my tool kit. The wide open sharpness seems about the same as the much cheeper 35mm f1.8. Again, I was hoping for better from a lens of this price point. Please note: I did pixel peep, and no-one but me is going to notice any issue, it is a very good quality match for the number of pixels on my D7500 DX sensor. The noise is kind of a Shhh sound like it is unlubricated plastic on plastic. Makes it feel a little cheep. Also not a show stopper as long as it doesn't get worse or cause some other problem over time.Overall, considering this is still a relatively inexpensive lens, It's a very good lens.

My first Nikon 50mm 1.4 lens was purchased in 1964. That MF lens was great and I still use it. I own several 50mm 1.4 lens purchased over time and what makes this special is that I can get almost instant focus shots that are razor sharp! The pros: 1) Focus is internal so focus doesn't alter polarizing settings 2) I can grab the lens to change the focus easily if I want to. (The previous design 50mm f 1.4 AF-D required you to switch the ring to manual focus) 3) It has great bokeh is very good (as it is on previous 1.4 lenses) 4) Fast, accurate AF-S autofocus is giving me a lot more keeper shots that are sharp. 5) Great keep-on-camera lens for walking around. 6) Well thought out placement of controls make the lens feel like I have used it for years. OK, understand, a 1.4 is all about dark environs, good subject separation and likable bokeh. This is as fine a sample of all that as you will find. Sharpness, shmarkness...of course it is plenty sharp! Do YOU use a tripod in clubs and darkish parties? (I think not) so don't compare this to the megabuck Summicron, whose "legendary" qualities you or I will never exploit hand held at a shady party. This lens does EXACTLY what it's supposed to do. It's also plenty sharp at f/5.6-8. Sharpness closed down can be had a lot cheaper in the f/1.8. The f/1.4 has all the sharpness you'd ever need, unless you're doing copy work...that's another lens... If you are a Nikon fan and you aren't clinging to one of their old, all metal-bodied manual focus f/1.4 wunderlenses, get one ... MoreOK, understand, a 1.4 is all about dark environs, good subject separation and likable bokeh. Overall this lens didn't meet my expectations. My assessments are all done on a focus calibrated D810. Wide open contrast is average and sharpness is below average, both improve quickly when stopping down. Focus is the biggest disappointment, it's a little slow but it's not accurate at all - it tends to back focus if the subject is closer than 3 meters. I've seen this behavior with other fast Nikon primes and I believe the reason has to do with bokeh characteristics and how the AF sensor judges when something is in focus - the bokeh transition on this lens is so gradual and smooth the AF sensor misses. Bokeh on this lens is really nice for portraits and would be a top reason to have it. I was very hesitant about this lens as I had read many mixed reviews on it, but I can safely say this lens has become one of my absolute favorites - and that's saying a lot as I have some of Nikon's and Sigma's finest glass they make (Nikon 24-70G, Nikon 85 1.8g, Sigma 70-200, etc). The one oddity I noticed with this lens when shooting it wide open (at 1.4) was that it did terribly on paper (calibration paper tests) but as soon as I started running test shots on people, specifically their eyes, it's TACK sharp. I can honestly say that I've not had a lens perform so poorly with the calibration chart but then blow me away with actual in-person tests! 100% crops I have no issues at all making out all the individual eyelash details (and then some). And the raw files that come out with this lens are to die for! Just love everything about this little guy.....oh and on that topic....this thing is so compact it's actually a joy to carry around, unlike some of my other 6 pound lenses. This is a lens that you will absolutely love after you give it some time and practice. One item of caution - it does have terrible chromatic aberration when wide open, but for the most part, that's fixable in post. Can't say enough good things about this lens. I've attached a landscape shot I took with it the other week.
So far I am really enjoying using this 50mm f/1.4 lens. It has fast autofocus, good bokah, is small, lightweight, and yields sharp images when it hits focus on my D800. But this is my first "modern" G series lens, after using nothing but older AF-D and manual focus lenses on my Nikons, so I don't have the same perspective or presumptions as other "professional" reviewers have who generally panned this lens's performance. Regardless, if you can get this lens on sale, it is a great addition if you need a fast prime 50mm F-mount lens. The only downside is that it takes 58mm lens filters, so all my 52mm filters I use on my older prime lenses won't fit.
Nikon AF-S NIKKOR 50mm f/1.4G Lens:It's been years since I've used a 50mm and I hadn't thought a lot about it really until I started seeing these gorgeous images from my friend. What's in focus is tack sharp and the rest is creamy mush. Not instantly like the 200 I have, but it gets soft pretty quickly. Then mush. I went straight for f1.4 and there was just enough DOF to cover her face and her shirt and enough of her hair. The one thing I did notice is that I have some green fringing in some of the softer but not mushy areas like the hair and one shoulder and a little bit on the rock right behind her. I'm not worried about it. It's a forest shot but it is worth keeping an eye on. I've only had this out the once, but I really look forward to using it some more.
Model as ordered online was not the lens in the picture (shown was a 1.4G, in actual fact, there is no "G" on the given product (But the title of the product is correct though), (No "G" is the older model from the 70s-80's, the G was introduced in the late 2000's).The Given lens was scuffed looking and had a chip in the metal connector somehow. I'm sure the other specimens won't turn up like that, and it's luck of the draw, but ultimately, the image shown is a lens 30 years newer than the lens than you'd get.
