Let me start by saying I love this lens. I probably use it the most, maybe as much as my 24-70 Nikon. I have an older 85mm Nikon 1.4, but it doesn’t autofocus with my Nikon mirrorless as it has the older autofocus system where you need the motor in the camera. I got this lens to replace it and wasn’t sure what to expect. After having used it on several shoots now, I can say I’m in love with this lens. It isn’t crazy sharp at 1.8, but stopping down to 2-2.5 wakes this lens up a ton. The out of focus areas are very pleasant to my eye, and it shoots video very well. The lens is very light, but doesn’t feel too cheap either. It goes very well with my Nikon Z5. I love that the front doesn’t extend at all during focus, and that there is a rubber gasket around the mount. ... MoreLet me start by saying I love this lens. The cheaper Canon lenses don’t have this, so it’s a nice touch. The price of this lens was very reasonable, and it is quickly becoming my go-to lens when I don’t need a wide shot. My ultimate set up would be a 24-70, which I already have, a 70-200 2.8, and 85mm prime and a 35 mm prime. I’m half-way to my dream collection and I’m glad this lens is part of it.I would like the 1.4 more I think, but you can’t go wrong with this lens for the price and quality you’re getting.

I have a 85 1.4D which has excellent build quality but not up to the modern standards for coatings. I used it and a 70-200 2.8 for portraits, outdoors and studio. After reading the reviews the thought of a smaller lighter walking around lens of this favorite FF got the better of me and I bought the 1.8g. It has become my favorite lens, not only is the image quality superior to the 1.4D but it is darn close to the 1.4G I have rented many times. But toss in the light, small package and it goes with me everywhere. I use it on a D800 and D7000 and rank it as the best value in my kit that is full of fast 2.8 Nikon zooms and a few 1.4 and a 1.2 prime. Next on my list is a 20 1.8G and 135 Sigma ART as my do anything kit and leave the heavy zooms home. It is light and seems very rugged and much more likely to survive a fall than the heavy metal lenses. I can't imagine being dense polymer as being flimsy, it feels great. If someone can't get great pro grade portraits or product images with this lenses to satisfy any photo-editor, they will not with any less either. Everyone I have recommended it to, has fallen in love with it.

This lens didn't quite meet my expectations for a f/1.8 prime, but ultimately the images you can make with it are really nice. My assessments are all done on a focus calibrated D810. Wide open contrast is average and sharpness is good, stopped down the lens improves greatly. I've found that I need to apply a bit more contrast and saturation to the images out of this lens than with my other f/1.8 primes. The focus is accurate and a little slow to move from minimum to maximum but in smaller increments it shows little to no issue. If you value a good price over ultimate performance then you'll like this lens.

I purchased this lens because it was much lighter than my other options in this focal length range. I have many beautiful optics:Sig 50mm 1.4 art, Tam sp35mm 1.4, the latestversion Tam sp90mm 2.8 and many more to B&H's profit. And to be sure I have enjoyed owning these optics as well as the excellent experience of doing business with B&H.( I mean that )More importantly, I am serious about creating images. When it's timeto pick up the gear and to go out to shooting it helps when you can carry the equipment. (without an attendant hernia )So I expected OK optical results from this plastic feather. But, I was blown away by just how crazy good this lens truly is. Ok I'm an f5.6-f7.1 scenic shooter. Not fair since most of you will be say f2.0 to f4.0 portrait shooters. So, to be fair, I ran a bunch of tripod mounted studio lit tests between 4ft to 8ft and from f1.8 to f4.0. Once again I am blown away. Not so fond of f.8, but all the fest from f2.2 on is truly excellent. Really! Color, contrast and oh yes yes sharpness. So I can say that if you are still shooting DSLR say 24 to 36 mega pixelFX or 20 to 24 mega pixel DX ( bodies used for these tests )then I can only give a strong thumbs up to this device for anyone contemplating its purchase. Also, right now, switching my systems to mirror-less would not get me anywhere in real world results. But even if one does make the change and they would prefer all Z lenses then this one did not break the bank and will produce like crazy for you for as long as you choose to use it.
I have not had much opportunity to work with this lens so far, but I have a love and respect for the 85mm lens. In my initial forays during this time of “social distancing," the working distance between the camera and the subject is just right. I am not the type of person to stick a lens in someone’s face and take a photo. Beyond the distortion issue of wider angle lenses, I seriously believe the subject needs to be comfortable within their own space. While it is much larger than my manual focus lens of long ago, for the price, this lens appears to be a gem.I have been using it at f5.6 to f11 on my D750 and so far it hasn’t failed to deliver the photos I want to see.
I bought this prime lens to use on my Nikon D810 and l’m absolutely blown away by just how sharp the images are, after years of using zooms and being pleased with the results this takes the pictures to another dimension. I read up on this lens and most say it’s a portrait lens please don’t think that this is all it’s good at. I’ve now used it for street photos, architecture, full length portraits, still life(antique dolls), low light shots of plants and of course actual portraits. I have not been disappointed with any of the results. I’d recommend this lens to any photographer who wants to step up to becoming a serious photographer.
Let me touch on two points. In photo/video there is the old conversation of zooms v primes. I don't care what tests and studies show. I get sharper images easier with primes. Capturing photos or video of people I strongly recommend a quality set of 35mm, 50mm, and 85mm (or 105) fixed focal length lenses. Commercial photo video is my job and I am a Nikon shop. So I do have a 14-24, 24-70, and 70-200. Those are all excellent. But if I am setting up for professional portraits or interview video, I use the prime lens that fits the location. The 85mm gives me tight crops, sharp eyes, and soft backgrounds. And the second part. I don't know about Canon, Olympus, Lumix, Fuji, Sony or others. But Nikon will design and produce their fastest focal lengths, like 1:4 or 2:8. These are their premium professional products. Then they will release a 1:8 or maybe f4 version. Generally half the expense or less. Sometimes the slower models test a little better (I think DXOMark scores the 50mm 1.8 higher than the 1.4) The more expensive lenses are more durable and better weather sealed. So consider your application. For me this 85mm is going to be a portrait session lens with controlled lighting. The 1.8 is fantastic for this. Once you setup your shoot and use one of these single focal length lensesyou will see what I mean. Primes deliver awesome images.
Honestly I did have my eye on the 85/1.4 Nikon or Sigma Art lenses but I didn’t want to spend that much. I bought this lens as a compromise on budget and for the price it seemed like a good value. Once I received the lens, and noticed that it is a plastic barrel and marked “Made in China,” my initial reaction was disappointment and initial instinct to return it.But I paused and did some research first. Numerous people made excellent points: 1) lots of quality things are made in China such as the iPhone and MacBook I’m happy with, 2) the plastic is highly durable and has the advantage of being much lighter than metal, 3) the glass is great and Nikon ensures that lenses are made to spec.So I gave it a chance, shot some portraits of my daughter and was pleasantly ... MoreHonestly I did have my eye on the 85/1.4 Nikon or Sigma Art lenses but I didn’t want to spend that much. I found in focus areas to be very sharp, color and rendering beautiful, and depth of field beautifully smooth. Haven’t had a chance to really capture any images with backlighting to test the bokeh, but I did play around with aperture through the viewfinder and the DoF preview, and feel confident I will get some great portraits with great bokeh and DoF.Is it the absolute best 85mm you can get? Probably not. If budget were not a concern I’d definitely look to keep it and compare it to the Sigma Art series which has one of the highest ratings on DxoMark. But for those of us on a budget this lens is a great value! It’s a fair price for the quality of materials and images you get.
This lens was everything I hoped it would be. I’ve paired it with my D750. The first family shoot I did turned out amazing. Sharp lens with great colors. I instantly booked two more shoots from my first few photos without even trying! This lens will pay for itself! Best Buy had an excellent deal on it too!
For the price, if you are fine with using a prime instead of a zoom, get this lens. This lens is insanely sharp and I'm able to crop in on pictures (when needed) to ridiculous amounts because of how much resolution is still left. I bought this as a portrait lens for a full frame (d750). I also have several zooms and also the Nikon 50mm 1.8. I was actually relatively disappointed in how soft the 50mm was for a prime, but have kept it because of the price and size/weight/versatility for a walk around. However, this lens is now a go to lens whenever I can justify its use. If I were to redo this, I would have waited, skipped the nifty fifty, and gone straight to the 85mm 1.8 and coupled it with either the 35mm 1.8 or something that covers the lower end of the focal ... MoreFor the price, if you are fine with using a prime instead of a zoom, get this lens. I've also used the 105mm macro Nikon, and honestly, while that lens is versatile because of the macro ability, it hunts for focus during portraits, is far too heavy, and really isn't any sharper for portraits (and the bokeh isn't as creamy, despite the DOF supposedly giving it an advantage). Also, there are far better priced macro lenses available if you want macro shots that will save you the money to spend on other lenses. I don't see the need to pay extra for the 1.4 85mm since I rarely shoot that wide because of DOF issues with portraits and modern full frames have insane ISO when I really need it, or I can just strap on the flash. In the end, get the 85mm 1.8, it is insanely sharp, good resolution, quick focus, lite weight, and has great DOF and bokeh. It is twice the price of the 50mm, but worth every penny and more. These two lenses really shouldn't be compared to each other as this is a far superior product and one that a pro could actually keep in his/her arsenal for a shoot. Also, if you're a pro, skip the 1.4 and put the money towards another lens or piece of equipment. I've used both, it is not worth the money. The 1.4 gives you the fancy gold ring, more weight, and that's justifiably it. The Sigma Art is enticing, but also built and weighs like a tank, and unless you're a micro pixel peeper, I can't see the need of a lens that sharp. If anything, it will just create more problems in PP with portraits. Zero regrets with this lens.
