I got this camera brand new in August of 2012. It was my 1st "professional" camera. This camera has been wonderful! It has helped me learn how to do manual. Mine only came with 1 lens, but i didn't mind as i only got it for taking pictures of my son. In 2021 i decided to get a new camera, a mirrorless one, to up my photography game. I still have the 3100 in the closet as i can't bare to get rid of it. Sentiment. 100% recommend.

D3100 is an excellent and reliable device for a variety of beginners in photography: both lazy and ready for experimentationAs agreed above, without detailed technical specifications. The lens is convenient to use, but to quickly connect it to the body, you will have to practice. The impressive part is rubberized, which in combination with a rubber insert on the main part guarantees reliability and failure. At the base of the lens there are 2 switches used in manual focus. Although many scold the kit, in contrast to praise, because it has a greater viewing angle than similar models and is one of the best in this price segment. However, there's only so long that clever product design and feature integration can make up for a specification that looks dated. So with this in mind, Nikon has announced the D3100 - probably the biggest refresh of its entry-level offering since it really attacked the low end market with the original D40.The D3100 is built around a 14.2 megapixel CMOS sensor, bringing not only live view but also Full HD video capture to Nikon's entry-level model for the first time. In fact, this made it the first Nikon DSLR to offer 1920x1080 movie recording. It can only record clips up to about ten minutes long (due to a 4Gb maximum file size limitation shared by all DSLRs), but this still counts as an impressive feature addition at this level. The body gets a slight refresh from a basic design that essentially dates back four years to the D40, gaining an extra button to the left of the screen, a drive mode switch at the base of the mode dial, a sprung lever to engage live view and a direct record movie button. Revisions have also been made to the feature-teaching, hand-holding 'Guide Mode', and an additional autofocus mode that's designed to allow better focusing in live view and autofocus during video shooting. All of this adds up to a DSLR that incorporates all of 2010's 'must have' features but looks like the product of evolution, rather than dramatic innovation. And 2010 has been a year during which the rest of the market hasn't devloped along such predictable lines, not least during the expansion of the large sensor, mirrorless interchangable lens camera crowd.Camera makers always try to stress that mirrorless cameras are creating an entirely new market, rather than competing with entry-level DSLRs, but it's pretty clear that many people planning to upgrade from their point-and-shoot compact will consider both types of camera when making their decision. So, while the D3100 is unequivocally a DSLR (in a time where the line between DSLRs and mirrorless cameras is becoming increasingly hazy), its beginner-friendly guide mode puts it squarely in competition with several of the mirrorless models that are equally eager to welcome point-and-shoot upgraders. Many of these cameras, such as Sony's NEX-3 and 5, Olympus' E-PL1 and Panasonic's GF2, offer similarly accessible interfaces in a smaller, competitively-priced packages. They also, by eshewing the conventional DSLR design, are able to offer a shooting experience that is much closer to that of a compact camera - which even the best DSLR live view implementation can't easily mimic at the moment. So, while the D3100 offers an improved feature set when compared to a camera we really liked, it remains to be seen whether these additions will be enough to make it stand out as well as its predecessor did.Nikon D3100 Key Features14.2 megapixel DX-format CMOS sensor3.0" LCD monitor (230,000 dots)Image sensor cleaning (sensor shake)11 AF points (with 3D tracking)IS0 100-3200 range (12,800 expanded)HD movies (1080p, 720p or WVGA)

Happy Customer
2 August 2024

I took a chance and bought a camera! It is better then I expected! I had purchased the wrong one at first and wrote a email where they responded within a few minutes and switched my order to the correct one I wanted! I am so pleased with it and cannot wait to give to my kid for their Christmas gift! And see what beautiful pictures they get to capture!!

The D3100 is an excellent entry-level DSLR for the true photography enthusiast. The Nikon D series cameras all offer ease-of-use, reliability, durability and a vast array of features that will let you photograph like a pro. In particular, the D3100 blends features from the spectrum of Nikon DSLRs. In full auto mode even the first time user can pick this camera up and start taking beautiful pictures in a snap. The D3100 supports all of the Nikon F mount lenses ever made and the variety of auto focus (AF-S) lenses made by Nikon and other manufacturers is staggering. Getting your digital media off of this camera is simple, with USB-out and a mini HDMI output port For the amateur photographer, experienced or not, this camera packs a lot of bang for the buck. For the professional in the semi pro, it makes an excellent back up camera. I have a D3200, and a D5300 but for ease-of-use I still turn to this little gem. The color saturation and light sensitivity is incredible for any camera in this price range. Based on experience I have to give this camera an A+ for general features, ease-of-use, and overall great picture quality. At just over 16 megapixels, it's a steel, but don't let that for you when it comes to DSLR's megapixels aren't everything this isn't an iPhone or an android... it's a real camera designed and manufactured by one of the best names in photography... OUTSTANDING.......
6 April 2021

It arrived well packed and in good shape. It is fairly priced and I am pleased with it's level of good quality. Instead of learning Japanese, I worked out how to reset the operating language. I am pleased that it is a Nikon direct from Japan. That is where Nikon was born and raised. It is a well engineered tool, by highly skilled designers and engineers. I am left handed and like most right handed tools, there will be a learning curve. The technology is at a higher level the Canons that I used to shoot weddings with. I'm not doing weddings anymore, but it looks like this camera will be valuable in my new specialty. I may get another and some lenses to establish a working system to pursue my new portrait objective.

I give it 5 stars because I don't believe you can do better for the price it is now (Feb 2014).Let me say straight away this camera is built down to a price and so it is unfair to compare it to a professional model. I have used dozens of DSLRs from all the major manufacturers and know there are only really two things to consider - ease of use (a subjective thing as we are all different) and build quality. The latter is unimportant if you mostly intend using the camera indoors on a tripod with a remote, as will be the case for me with the D3100. So yes indeed, this camera is cheaply made and it shows - buttons that wobble, and card and battery doors that don't shut properly, being the most obvious. On the plus side, AF is very quick and reasonably accurate, and ... MoreI give it 5 stars because I don't believe you can do better for the price it is now (Feb 2014).Let me say straight away this camera is built down to a price and so it is unfair to compare it to a professional model. The latter is unimportant if you mostly intend using the camera indoors on a tripod with a remote, as will be the case for me with the D3100. So yes indeed, this camera is cheaply made and it shows - buttons that wobble, and card and battery doors that don't shut properly, being the most obvious. On the plus side, AF is very quick and reasonably accurate, and there is a bright AF assist light that makes it easy to achieve focus in dimly lit situations. Live view is ok for video, but the monitor resolution is not really high enough for precise manual focusing. Controls and menus are quite well thought out and on the whole I find it easy to reach the right buttons and adjust settings in the menu - if pushed I'd say I would prefer buttons for WB and ISO but you can attach one of these to the Nikon's fn button and to be fair the menu system is quick and easy once you get used to it. I like the graphic display and information button that explain all the settings. The viewfinder is nice and bright too, with easy to read information. The shutter is smooth and fairly quiet, and once you have a firm grip on the body and avoid putting fingers near the flimsy doors, the camera actually begins to feel better made than it appears at first glance. The body is small however and the grip is quite small - room for two fat ot three medium fingers on the front and half a thumb on the back. This could be a problem for anyone intending to use the camera for more than 20-30 minutes at a time, unless you have very small hands. However this is a problem I've encountered often with entry-level cameras from all manufacturers so don't be put off by this - try and get your hands on a few different models before you buy and see how they feel to you.I've left image quality to last because frankly it doesn't matter unless you are a professional camera reviewer with lots of charts and measuring sticks. Having owned about 40 digital cameras I know that I can make an image from any of them look exactly the same as an image from another. Many share the same technology anyway, and the differences are subtle and insignificant to all but a few specialist photographers (and they won't be in the market for a D3100). Suffice to say IQ is fine, the metering is accurate and there are lots of options for adjusting JPEGs. If, like me, you prefer to rely on good lighting and technique (and even good old-fashioned filters) then be advised that the Nikon's RAW files are far superior to its JPEGs and unless you intend to use RAW you will never get the best from this camera. So if you're in the market for a cheap camera with a 2 year warranty with a useful guide mode for beginners then I would certainly recommend the D3100, and more experienced users who shoot only in RAW and manual should find the D3100 perfectly adequate - especially if you pair it with prime lenses. Don't be tempted to buy a cheap zoom lens just because it's a cheap body - you won't be getting the best from the D3100 if you do.

Very happy with this purchase!
1 March 2024

Camera works perfectly, in great condition! Came with everything I need to use it in my photography class. Got it at a great price. Shipping took forever because it was international. But when it arrived I was so relieved (both that it made the journey safely and by the quality and condition of the product!). No complaints.
