As advertised, this is a field microscope, and as such is a wonderful piece of equipment. It is both light, and well constructed, usually the two are mutually exclusive when it comes to microscopes, but Nikon has done a top notch job of combining the two. Focus is smooth, the image quality is excellent and the reversible stage comes in quite handy. It comes with a high quality soft sided carrying case and about the only thing I would suggest as an improvement is a set of stage clips. I ordered a pair from a microscope supply house, and jury-rigged them to fit. They are an absolute necessity when observing flat, light weight objects in the field, i,e, leaves, petals, etc. I also purchased a dual headed LED book light (battery powered) for an illumination source. ... MoreAs advertised, this is a field microscope, and as such is a wonderful piece of equipment. I just wanted to have something for occasional use indoors, which did not take up much space. It serves that purpose. It has some real shortcomings in that the field of view is quite narrow and eyeball centering must be perfect. Illumination can be had by using a battery powered booklight,or two. I mounted mine on a small desk microphone stand by adapting a mic to 1/4-20 stud. Something by Bogen will work. It focuses well, although it is pure plastic in construction. The optics are good. I would consider it a fun gift for a well regarded pre teen. Not a serious instrument. Just a fun item. It folds up very small indeed, and has a nice carry bag. Simple but fun for a youngster just starting out. Nikon should have included the stage clips, they are pre drilled for same. ... MoreI just wanted to have something for occasional use indoors, which did not take up much space. It serves that purpose. Not sure re recommend it to any adult. I may give it to pre teen granddaughter though.

I use this product for failed product analysis in the field. The revolving head makes it very useful for close up inspection where you cannot lay a specimen on a slide

This microscope is like achilds toy. For something that costs [$] it should be better quality. Granted, [$] is not a lot of money, but this thing is junk.

To much expensive to be a toy
2 February 2008

I bought this one to use in the field (indoor and outdoor). Unhappily it was not of great help. Indoor it is impossible to use it without a good light source. Outdoor in the day light there is shadows caused by your head and the obliquity of sun rays reaching the field of observation so that the specimen is not well illuminated.
