Bought this 2nd pair for my son in law as they are the same as the ones I have used for 20 years now. Of course they have the great Nikon glass that I have always used exclusively as a professional photographer. The most important spec is almost always not included when searching for the right binoculars--that is the exit pupil. Hold the binoculars several inches from your eye and notice the diameter of the hole of light coming through. The bigger the hole the more light they will capture. Anything near or above 5 mm is great for hunting, bird watching ,or any low light activity you want to see. Not only do these have a large exit pupil, they are quick to focus (even with heavy gloves on), durable, and light weight. Super product at a fair price.

I am disappointed in these because: The eyepiece cap assembly keeps falling off (a common complaint on B&H, Adorama, and Amazon), and Nikon doesn't seem to be willing to address the issue. The case is pretty chintzy (no strap attachment points) for binoculars in this price range. And to my eyes the image quality is only marginally better than that of the $90 Bushnell's I bought from B&H 12 years ago. On the plus side, because they are roof prism design they are smaller, lighter, and more comfortable to look through than the porro prism Bushnell's. I am returning these and will order a pair of of Vortex 8x42 Diamondback HD binoculars.

I bought these binoculars at the time Nikon introduced a newer version of them so the price for these binoculars dropped. I had a 10X Hawke monocular and I wanted a more powerful binocular.I wanted a lightweight and relatively compact binocular to take it with me during hiking, walking in parks, canoeing, fishing and bird watching. This binocular fully meets my expectations. For these binoculars I would recommend to buy a tripod adapter. You can hold it in your hands, this is good for general observation. But if you need to have a detailed view of something, then tripod would help. Say, if you want to read a license plate of a car parked on the other bank of a river. What I like:PowerfulLightweight (comparing to other models)Clear view, no visible ... MoreI bought these binoculars at the time Nikon introduced a newer version of them so the price for these binoculars dropped. I've suffered with my father's binoculars for fifty years, but choosing new ones, with all the various products available, was confusing and off-putting--but after a year... yes, a YEAR, of looking and reading, I finally pulled the trigger and I COULD NOT BE HAPPIER. Crystal clear, easy to focus and not too heavy. Even my 7-year-old granddaughter said, WOW papa! These are really nice! (Gotta love grandkids). One reviewer wrote something like ...I've paid more for less... I believe it.
Great powerful magnification, sharp image, wide and comfortable field of view, easy focusing. Low light performance is very good. It feels like the build quality is good, but time will tell. Eyepiece cups tend to loosen up, not sure if it is only my unit or a general issue. Chromatic aberration is noticeable under bright sunlight, but bearable. Usable without a tripod for short periods, but heavy and not comfortable to hold in hands for too long. The supplied tripod mount seems shaky and touching the binoculars while on the tripod produces much shake. Important: the minimal interpupillary distance of these binoculars is 60 mm and this is too large for some people. Check this before buying.
I was at a local birding hotspot and using a pair of 12x50 Vortex Diamondback binoculars. Another person there was using the Nikon Monarch 5 12x42 binoculars. When I compared the two I was surprised at how good the image was with the 42mm binoculars. The Nikon were 20% smaller and much lighter at 22 ounces. I decided that the 12x42 was for me the better choice over 12x50 binos. The lighter and more compact the binoculars the more likely I am to have them with me and available for use.
This is my first pair of Binoculars. I wanted a nice clear high quality pair but couldn't justify spending too much for recreational use so I did some research and found the Nikon M5. The 12x magnification is real nice! I find them fairly easy to keep steady. The build quality is fantastic being solid and has a great feel. The focus is butter smooth. The optics are super clear and crisp. For the price I don't think you can get a better quality binocular. I highly recommend the M5.
I just bought these and I’m really impressed. They are bright crisp and clear, even in low light. They feel very sturdy and well made but not too heavy. I’ve been looking at binoculars for a years and a half, reading reviews and researching. I’ve looked through Swarovski and Zeiss and in all honesty I don’t see enough of a difference to warrant another $1500. Nikon must have redesigned the lens covers because mine fit very securely unlike other reviews have said. The focus knob is the perfect stiffness; easy to turn but very solid. The diopter adjustment is stiff which I love because it doesn’t get knocked out of adjustment. The eye cups have multiple relief positions as you turn them out. They too are stiff and sturdy. I’m very happy with my choice and I’d ... MoreI just bought these and I’m really impressed. They are bright crisp and clear, even in low light. They feel very sturdy and well made but not too heavy. In my search for the perfect binoculars I comparred multiple and narrowed it down to the diamondback hd, prostaff 7s and these monarch 5. The vortex was an easy no, I originally purchased the 7s because of the price, and honestly they are also amazing. However they were too long for my bino harness so I returned them (thank you cabelas) and upgraded to the monarch 5. And I have to say wow. In the store it's hard to tell the difference, but out in the mountains glassing for deer, the clarity, crisp sharp images, amazing color rendition and contrast really start to shine. The more compact size and way better objective lenses caps and even just the feel of the binoculars all come into play. So is it worth the price difference ? Absolutely. I'm a birder and nature photographer and had used a pair of Nikon 7x50s for about 30 years. I wasn't much into birding back in my college days and they didn't provide the close focus needed for birding. While out on an Audubon field trip, a friend let me try her Monarch 5 8x42s and I couldn't believe my eyes. After researching and reading reviews, I went to the Bass Pro Shop in Prattville and compared the Nikon Monarch 5 to a pair of Vortex and Leopold, and decided on the Monarch 5. The first thing that got my attention was the brightness, even in low light. Also the depth of field and ability to throw things in the background out of focus is perfect for isolating moving wildlife. In photographic terms, we would call this "fast glass." Actually, I didn't know this ... MoreI'm a birder and nature photographer and had used a pair of Nikon 7x50s for about 30 years. The first thing that got my attention was the brightness, even in low light. Also the depth of field and ability to throw things in the background out of focus is perfect for isolating moving wildlife. In photographic terms, we would call this "fast glass." Actually, I didn't know this technology was available in binoculars. Whatever Nikon did with the optics, it does not hinder the transmission of light through the lenses. I also like the stiff diopter adjustment which prevents any creep once it's been set. Their weight is unbelievably light compared to my previous Nikon 7x50s. The colors are rendered very accurately and there seems to be a much appreciated slight increase in contrast. The only quibble would be the eye cup protectors which do not stay on, but I hardly ever use them anyway. However, the objective lens protectors are heavy duty rubber and fit snugly in place. Since I've had them about a month, I have identified animal life I had never seen before. And their ability to focus as close as 8 ft has allowed me to identify hitherto unknown butterflies. The level of detail they show is breathtaking. I would say they have changed the way I look at the world around me, and I don't leave home without them.
