So I had a Nikon 300mm PF ED VR lens which I loved but it got stolen last week in San Francisco in a smash and grab from my expedition along with other stuff. Well I wanted to get another one but heard about the Z 400mm and thought I'll give it a shot. Even though it's bigger and a little heavier it might be ok. So I order it from B&H and had it in a few days. When I received it I carefully unpacked it oh by the way I was at a national park in Florida with many birds around, so wasting no time I connected it to my Z7II and took my first image. I was blown away on how fast it got focus on a flying osprey and then a landing of a Blue Heron. I took a look at them in the view finder and couldn't believe how sharp they were. I also realized that the extra 100mm was a lot ... I am very impressed with is lens and do not regret spending the extra money on it rather than just replacing my 300mm but I will in the near future get another 300mm cause it is just that good too!

Pros: It's very sharp and focuses quickly. I love the AF memory buttons - they are very intuitive. It's very lightweight for what it is.Cons: I'm not a fan of the aperture ring placement being forward because it's easy to turn by mistake. The build has a lot of plastic.I've had this lens out a few times now. The build is a give and take because the plastic keeps weight down and it's easy to handhold. It's lighter than the Z 70-200 2.8 and while it's not fragile, it does not feel as sturdy. I think it's a good compromise. Compared to other offerings and the general pricing for these types of lenses, it's a great lens.

I love this lens. Primarily shoot wildlife and so far this lens has exceeded all expectations on my z8. Using the 1.4x TC shows zero loss of image quality. I am practicing with hummingbirds at my feeder and it isolates the birds. I debated between this and the 100-400 landing on this lens because most of my photos are in this range. I will use the 24-120 F/4 and 70-180 f2 for the other ranges I may need. So far this lens is primarily on my camera at all times. I am 5'2" and weigh about 110 lbs I could not go much higher in weight and still handhold that is why I opted not to get the new 180-600 lens. Time will tell if I made the right decision when I visit Yellowstone in the Fall.

This is yet another lens by Nikon that proves that ultra-high quality doesn't have to mean huge. This lens is lighter than my 300 f/4 D, and only about 1 pound heavier than my 300mm PF. But sharper than either of them. A significant amount of weight is toward the back of the lens, which means I think it would balance better on a smaller body like the Z7 or rumored Z8 than it does on a Z9. That rearward center of mass means that it might be a bit harder to hold steady than you would expect. Nevertheless, at 1/100th or so, most of my shots are keepers due to it's great VR working with the Z9 stabilization. It's got great AF; fast and nearly silent. Reports are it works great with a 1.4 TC, and once I can actually get my hands on one, I'll certainly find out. Some ... Some minor drawbacks: While I like the quickly removable tripod foot, I'd like it even better if I could remove the whole collar. Mostly because of it not having a faster aperture. My concern was low light performance. My concern is no longer a concern. While not the fastest it is more than acceptable attached to the Z9. My go to lens has been a 600 f4 but I have to tell you, after having this lens for a week and half I am thoroughly impressed. I literally have not used my 600 once since the 400 arrived. A big plus is the weight. So light compared to my other primes. Carrying my camera in the field has just gotten a lot easier. The light weight has helped me get on target quicker and my hit rate has increased. The image quality and ... I slapped this lens on my Z7ii and took a few test shots - just to be sure that I did not have to return a possibly defective copy to B&H. Within 60 seconds I knew that this lens was working perfectly, and worth every penny that I paid for it. I cannot believe what this lens can do. To stress test the lens, I decided to shoot hand held indoors in low light at f/11 and ISO 400. The shutter came out to be 1/8 sec. Focus was fast. Picture was crystal clear and sharp. I moved to F/8 with a luxuriously fast shutter of 1/15 sec - the image was perfect. I took a shot at F/4.5 - perfect. Other points to note: this is one of the lightest lenses I have. Most F-mount lenses for my D850 outweigh this lens, regardless of focal length. As for sharpness, contrast, color rendition: ... Have a F Series Nikon 400mm F2.8 VR lens I bought new several years ago. It is still in perfect shape (will be for sale now) and obviously the new S Series 400mm F4.5 is not as MIGHTY, but after about 1 month of use I am quite pleased with how light the new S Series lens is, as well as the photo quality while paired with my Nikon Z cameras.My conclusion is that I will lose a little bokeh of the F series lens at F2.8, but hauling that big setup around will surely minimize the times I go out shooting with it.With the new S series lens, it should be an advantage for me, quality results and ease of use, I'm 66 so less gear/weight is important.And yes, the F series lens works fine with adapter, which adds a little more weight. LOL
I'll get the only bad thing out of the way. If you have big hands like me - the focus ring will get knocked continuously. I have lost focus on a few shots due to this. The lens is just so compact that you have to be REALLY careful where you place your hands. I am positive I'll adjust over time - so I am taking nothing away for this issue.The positives here are huge.I do not think I will be ordering the 400 f/2.8 at this point. This lens is phenomenal and since I do most of my shooting at 500 and above I see absolutely no need to spend the money. The image quality on the lens is phenomenal. Not joking. This will come with me a lot just to have a shorter focal length backup when toting my 600 f4 around (or hopefully if it ever arrives before I die my 800 f6.3).The balance on the lens is incredible. Nearly every long focal length lens I own (including the 500pf) has a tilt point that causes me to have to make a secondary adjustment. At no point does the tilt axis ever move off the camera with this lens. That is a first that I can recall.Subtracting the focus ring bumping issue (which again is a function of the relatively compact size of the lens) - the other controls are great. Smooth operation everywhere.The focus is crazy fast. This is subjective - but I noticed my 600 f4e seems to focus faster with the FTZ on my Z9 than it does on a D850. But this is next level instantaneous. It can hunt a bit, but there are numerous ways to prevent that.With the 1.4x TC (yes - it is supported despite what is noted on B&H), it makes a compelling and lightweight 560mm f/6.3. It won't replace my 600, but if I want to travel light and am shooting in decent light it will do the trick.Ultimately - for the sale price I paid I feel like I just got the bargain of the century. Well done Nikon.Now please find a way to make me an 800mm f/6.3.
