I originally purchased the 18-35 f3.5-4.5 from B&H 6 weeks ago, I thought the lens was sharp enough, but really wanted the 16-35 f, 4, but it was out of my price range at the time. This lens was a great value from an honest, seller who can be trusted. I have found this Nikon 16-35 lens to be as pristine and like brand new as the seller presented it as being and that I had hoped for in a wide angle lens. It has been excellent for landscapes and if you don't get too close to the subject, it is good for those shots where a 24 mm lens just can't quite cover it all. But, I have also discovered that it is not the best lens for people shots when you are only 5-10 feet from the subject. There is what I think of as a distortion in perspective. Plus, the seller continued to communicate with me via email answering every question I posed. Bottom line? I love this lens for landscapes and those shots where you are not too close. It's important to use it for it's design purposes and stick to more appropriate lenses for people shots and subjects like vintage autos or aircraft where you want the subject to nearly fill the entire frame. For those photos and with this lens set to 16-20 mm you will see some distortion if you are too close, unfortunately often necessary in crowds with people everywhere forcing you to be too close for your best shot. For those shots, if at all possible, I rely on my Nikon 24-85 and it's crystal clear images with very little observable distortion, at least to me as an amateur enthusiast. For professionals who rely on their work for income maybe they will not be as enthusiastic as I am, but for me, a dedicated amateur, I am very happy with this Nikon lens.

Each lens has its own strengths and weaknesses but the VR feature on the 16-35mm makes it a better option for handheld use with the D8xx series cameras which have a high density sensor and are prone to pixel blur. A tripod is not always practical and VR really helps in situations where I need to go wide and as a result I end up with more usable images. In fact, after doing a side-by-side comparison with my Nikon 14-24mm I found the 16-35mm better on the edges and in the corners under magnification in many instances. However when I compared images that contained, say houses, in the frame the 14-24mm was far superior to 16-35mm, even in the middle of the frame which was a surprise for me. Nikon shooters are lucky to have three (3) really good UWA lenses to choose from (the 14-24mm f/2.8, 16-35mm f/4 VR and the newer 18-35mm f/3.5-4.5) and while most of us cannot afford to own all three it is clear to me that each lens fills a distinct need. For me the 14-24mm is the sharpest of the three but is more of a specialty lens that feels at home on a tripod, in the studio or for critical architecture work. By way of comparison the 14-24mm is two stops faster and is sharper at f/5.6 than the 16-35mm is at f/10 under magnification and has slightly better color and contrast. However the 16-35mm is a very versatile, is almost as sharp, which is saying allot, and serves a role that the 14-24mm cannot. Continuing the comparison, the 18-35mm is super sharp and very light which makes it ideal for traveling and only slightly trails the 16-35mm in terms of color and contrast. I own, or have owned all three of these Nikon UWA lenses and as long as you understand the strengths and weaknesses you can't really go wrong as long as you choose according to your needs.

That's both good and bad: good because you have technical descriptions & versatility; bad because it's tedious to wade through it all. I've been using the 18-35 f3.5-4.5G for several years. It's a fine lens and super sharp but has a lot of distortion which is of course easily correctable. However, the 16-35 f4G is a much better build quality, has VR which is so very nice in low light situations, and gives me a little more coverage. It's also has much less distortion. All in all, the 16-35 f4 just beats the 18-35 easily in most all shooting situations. About the only negative is the fact that the 16-35 is slightly heavier.

Check out the images below and judge for your selves. So what about the f/2.8 of the 14-24mm and 17-35mm? With all three lenses, shooting landscape or architecture you'll need an f-stop of f/5.6 or better for sharpness, ideally, it is said, somewhere around f/8.0-f/11. So unless you're in bright sunlight, you're going to need a tripod regardless. For me, when shooting in dark interiors at f/6.3 hand-held, the VR on the 16-35mm is a most welcome addition, especially in areas where tripods and monopods are verboten, like museums, galleries and (increasingly) theme parks. Why f6.3? Because it's just about the smallest I can go when I shoot dark interiors in aperture priority on my D610 with ISO throttled back to 800. At these settings my shutter speeds get crazy slow, to 1/30th of a second or even slower to 1/15th of a second. So how do I shoot 1/30 or slower hand-held? By bracing myself on any wall, floor, door or errant 9-year old,( on second thought scratch the last one). There's one last trick that often works; firing off a quick 5-shot burst. Set yourself in a wide stance, hold the camera firmly to your face (but not too hard), breathe out halfway, stop, then gently squeeze the shutter. Shot taken? Good! Feel free to breathe again. The first frame will be fuzzy, due to pressing the shutter but the others will ( hopefully ) be much cleaner.
I have a 24-90 F4 Sima Art lens for my D780 and wanted to be able to shoot wider shots below 24mm. I reviewed many lens in this category and decided to purchase this one. Although it isn’t an F2.8 lens, the widest opening a F4.0 met my needs and also brought the price down substantially. I did not find much distortion and post processing was able to correct these issues. It is lightweight and works perfectly with my D780 and I can use it on my Nikon D7500 yielding a 24-55 focal length.I would highly recommend this lens.
Lens was purchased to replace an older 17-35 mm f/2.8 that stopped working. Upon receipt, the lens went through a series of tests. Distortion was hardly noticeable and focus was very fast and accurate.For these tests a D750 and D500 camera was used.The lens was next used to photograph a Basketball game in dungeon lighting. The lens performed very well at capturing fast moving players at f/5; refocusing quickly and accurately. The lightweight of the system is a plus for sports. Photos required minimal post-processing.
