I'm fortunate to own several nice lenses, most of the FX variety which I use on my D850. I've owned a Z7ii for about a month now, trading my Z6ii for the Z7ii through B&H. I'm a sucker for sharpness and my stable of FX lenses includes several Sigma lenses because I found their counterparts from Nikon to be similar in sharpness but costing substantially more, or I traded the Nikons for the Sigma's because of my disappointment with their performance. I believe the Nikon Z lenses to be significantly sharper and lighter than their Nikon and Sigma DSLR counterparts. Actually I highly recommend both the Nikon Z 24-120mm f4 and the Nikon Z 24-200mm f4-6.3. The latter is great in good light and probably as sharp in the center of the frame as the 24-120mm. But, the 24-200mm quickly climbs to f6.3 by about 75mm and demands a higher ISO or slower shutter speed in low light, and is far crisper at the edges of the frame. Given that I shoot a lot of actions shots in low light (dog show conformation events indoors), I felt it was the right move to buy the Nikon Z 24-120mm f4 S.

I bought the Nikon Z50 with the 2 kit lenses (16-50, 50-250)and I found out that they were limited. The small one was too small and it was like looking through a periscope. The Large lens was the one that I was using almost all the time because of better optics but it was not practical for closer shots. The optics for the small lens was not as good as the large lens. I know that the kit lenses were designed to be light and OK for all shots. But in the end I needed a more professional type of lens with good close-up and good long range shots. I use mine for focus lock and exposure adjustment respectively.This 24-120 is definitely a keeper, and it will be my go to walk around lens from now on. I've decided to sell my 24-200 after just 18 months of use, but I will keep my original f/4 24-70 kit lens that came with my Z6, as it's equally as good in the 24-70 range, and its' lightweight, compact size is perfect for squeezing into my carry on when space is a premium.

While I didn't Need a full-frame camera, I wanted to be able to use vintage lenses, and was willing to budget for the more expensive camera.I'm pretty happy with this camera so far. I've taken it on a short hike on a mountain trip, and found this combo to have as much reach as I needed. Pictures look great out of camera as jpegs, though I shoot raw too for when I want to change something. I use this lens primarily for portraits (mostly at the 120mm focal length) and pro video. This would make a perfect wedding and event lens (provided you don't need the extra stop). I used to shoot weddings and events with the 24-120 g, I would've loved this S version if I would still be shooting wedding and event photography. I was hesitant to buy this lens at first but I needed a little more reach for traveling. I had a Nikon 24-70mm but it just didn't have the reach I was hoping for, so I bought the 24-120 that served me well for many years. I recently purchased a Nikon Z9 and with a couple of the larger zoom telephotos coupled with the Z9, I found that this old man just couldn't carry that camera coupled with a big telephoto around for any length of time. I had a Nikon 24-70mm but it just didn't have the reach I was hoping for, so I bought the 24-120 that served me well for many years. I recently purchased a Nikon Z9 and with a couple of the larger zoom telephotos coupled with the Z9, I found that this old man just couldn't carry that camera coupled with a big telephoto around for any length of time. I recently purchased the 24-200mm lens and thought I would try it around the neighborhood before heading to Europe on vacation. I also have a Nikon D850 and was contemplating using that camera because of the weight difference but really wanted to use the Z9. Well, I think the Z9 with the 24-200mm is a match made in heaven. The combination is not as heavy as I thought it would be and the 24-200mm is razor sharp. The rotation of the lens barrel is smooth and solid and is really a sleeper of a perfect lens. The extra reach I get from this lens is perfect for me. What I can't get as far as extra distance, I can make up for in post processing. I don't regret for a second purchasing this lens and can't wait for my next vacation.

My first inclination was I could not accept those few weaknesses of the 24-120 and would return it. Yet after much more comparison with various styles of shots (landscapes, interiors, near-macros and more) I saw that the 24-120 is VERY sharp (and in all shots as sharp or nearly as sharp and in some cases seemingly sharper than the 24-70), silently focuses very rapidly and reliably, is noticeably lighter (useful for this 64 year old) and most notably has that extra reach from 70-120 in which range it performs wonderfully! So with some surprise and much satisfaction I have decided to keep the 24-120 and have now sold my former standard: the Z 24-70 f2.8. As a previous contributor here wrote, this is the new standard (at least for me) and I could not be happier. Thank you, Nikon, and thank you B&H.
Chances are, like me, you own the 24-200 Nikon and are wondering if this lens is worth the upgrade. As a landscape/nature photographer, I'll give you my reasons why I upgraded to this lens. I got this lens primarily for its f/4 maximum aperture. While my Nikkor 24-200 is longer at the telephoto end, I find its f/6.3 maximum aperture at 200mm to be limiting in less than ideal light.For example, I shot the attached image of a Black Vulture in deep shade at a local wildlife park. The camera settings were ISO 400, 1/80 at 120mm. I zoomed into this completely unedited raw file to 157% magnification to demonstrate the incredible detail this lens captured using the Nikon Z7II. The combination of the Z7II's in-body stabilizer with the relatively fast aperture of the 24-120, allowed me to shoot at a very clean ISO 400 and still keep the shutter speed high enough to avoid camera shake. Just plain ugly! Regardless of the reasons for this design, the look harkens back to yesteryear when the trombone style hallmarked inferior zooms. And though even the excellent 24-70 f/2.8 G extends to zoom, its extension is short enough to be hidden within the lenshood. It is interesting to me that not one official Nikon Z lens product photo shows a Nikkor zoom extended. Mayhaps Nikon, too, thinks extended lenses look dime-store and displeasing to the eye. Please note that my five star rating is for performance, not looks.That gripe aside, this 24-120 lens is a pleasure to use and it does produce beautiful, acute images. Mine is mounted on a Z 7II where it makes a splendid go-to, easy carry, and useful lens. It takes a lot of experimentation and hundreds, if not thousands, of images to learn how to employ a lens to its potential. For me that is a fun process and I still have a aways to go with this lens. But one thing I have learned is that at f/4, 120mm, and @ 1.5' (minimum working distance = 1.2') it can render a soft fade from a sharply focused subject to the background.Here are the lens settings for the accompanying photos. 1) Ginger in doorway 120mm f/4; 2) Sonia roses 95mm f/4; 3) Ginger backlit 120mm f/4; Yellow rose 120mm f/5.6; Ginger rolling in dryer-warm fresh sheets 120mm f/4.
