Weighing 125 g (approx.), and just 23.5 mm long (approx.), this super-slim and lightweight wide-angle prime lens is brilliant for creative, on-the-spot photography. It’s so unobtrusive it gives discretion a new name. Even the included bayonet hood doesn’t add any real bulk, and the hood can be fitted with 52 mm filters for even more creative options. Despite its diminutive size, this pancake lens has a reassuringly solid build—the lens mount is metal, and the lens barrel and all moving parts are sealed to protect from dust and water droplets.Equally at home shooting street scenes, landscapes, interiors, and more, the NIKKOR Z 26mm f/2.8 lets photographers turn every opportunity into a creative opportunity. The wide Z mount combines with the lens’ wide f/2.8 maximum aperture to deliver great low-light performance, and photographers can use faster shutter speeds to freeze action without sacrificing brightness. For closer work, focusing is sharp with the camera just 20 cm away from subjects—and bokeh can be accentuated at close distances for artful-looking background blur. Video shooters and vloggers can take advantage of the lens’ wide field of view and suppressed focus breathing to shoot great-looking footage, ideal for everything from sweeping wide shots to interviews that create a real sense of place.

A capable lens, but I'm on the fence

This is my new go-to backpacking lens. I packed this lens on a Nikon Z7 into Havasupai in the Grand Canyon and the performance to size-weight ratio is unmatched by any other lens I've used before. At 26mm and f/2.8 it should work adequately as a backcountry astrophotography lens as well. I'm also a big fan of the lens cap design. It stays on snug and there's almost no risk of it getting knocked off and lost when scrambling off trail, which I've done before. I wouldn't hesitate to buy this lens again.

Excellent image quality; minor design quirks
19 March 2023

Image quality is excellent by my own subjective measures on both DX and FX Z cameras. Small size and weight makes carrying it around a pleasure, and a fun, novel experience. Note that the small lens hood, with a protective filter attached, plus the unusual lens cap with covers the entirety of the front of the lens, not just the filter diameter, makes the lens extend a bit farther from the camera than is shown in most photos of the lens intended to emphasize its small size. But that's negligible - it's still small. The unusual lens cap, which appears highly-engineered and looks good, is a slip-on type, with a very thin felt-like material lining the inner circumference to enable it to smoothly slide over the lens ring. But that's negligible - it's still small. The unusual lens cap, which appears highly-engineered and looks good, is a slip-on type, with a very thin felt-like material lining the inner circumference to enable it to smoothly slide over the lens ring. The problem is that the fit is not very tight, and it is very easy to inadvertently knock the cap off. I've resorted to using a standard 52mm Nikon lens cap to place on the filter, as I believe that is much more likely to stay on the lens. One more unusual aspect of the lens is that the lens elements and their casing audibly move during focusing. You can hear this. It's not noisier than the old AF-D lenses or other Nikon AF lenses where there is physical movement of the lens elements and their casing (rather than all of the movement of the lens elements occurring entirely inside the lens barrel), but I suppose the sound may turn up on video where the audio portion is relatively soft. Not a big deal to me, but it's certainly not nearly silent as other Z lenses tend to be.Overall, I like the lens - it's great to have a small, light, relatively wide, fast f2.8 option that costs almost nothing (in terms of weight and size) to carry along everywhere.Hope this helps.Oh, did I

When mounted on my Z30, the enter package seems as small and light as what I had with the Fujifilm X100S.Coolness - The slip on lens cap is very cool and much more convenient than a snap on. Again, this design choice is very similar to the Fujifilm X100sNot perfect - Some definite compromises with the pancake design but nothing preventing this lens from being both a keeper and a highly valued prime:- external focusing extends the lens slightly beyond the lens body. If you put on the lens cap on when the lens is extended, then when you turn back on you receive a Error: Press shutter release... Pressing the shutter release resets lens and all is good but this is unnerving.Good news: the very minimal 'hood' supplied in the box eliminates this problem. Keep this hood on full time and no issues.- Focus motor noise - If you ever used any of Nikon's original AF lens then you have an idea of what this sounds like. It's noticeable to the photographer and camera's internal mics but does not carry very far. So if you plan on using for video - and you really should - then use an external mic. I found my compact shotgun mic even mounted on the camera body pretty much eliminates this issueOverall, I am extremely pleased I purchased this lens. Its quality performance and 'handiness' is truly outstanding.I have provided some pictures of it and 2 quick shots taken so you can see quality.

Good lens with a few strikes against it
20 March 2023

Overall a good lens, not great (but that's what I was expecting for the specs and the price). The stabilization seems a bit less effective than other Z-mount lenses with video, but it's not terrible. The things I don't like about the lens that surprised me: (1) the included Nikon HB-N111 Lens Hood isn't able to be locked into place. The lens hood is a must for me as I always use a UV filter to protect my lenses, and this one constantly comes loose and sometimes falls off when I retrieve it from a camera bag or even when I remove the lens cap, which leads to (2) the lens cap doesn't click into place like the other Z-mount lens caps, and it too is always falling off. I'm sure Nikon was space-saving with this decision, but I'd gladly give a bit more space away to not be constantly losing my lens cap. I used the lens on a one-week spring break trip and I can't count how many times both of these loose apparatuses caused me concern. In the end, though, I still think the lens is worth it for the size and for the quality of images and videos it produces. For the price point and size, it is well worth it in spite of its limitations.

Great compact size
11 May 2023

I have only had the lens a short time. The big feature is its smaller size. Sometimes you just want to take a Z5 when you are not expecting to shoot very much. This lens pretty much is parallel to the handle and does not extend beyond it. It is about half the size of 24-50/4-6.3 that comes with some of the camera packages. I have not made any comparison tests yet.

I Like It!

I am happy I own one.Ever since I bought a Nikkor 40/2 I had been eying the 28/2.8 as a wider companion lens. At the same time, I was looking at the 26/2.8 on Nikon's lens roadmap and was waiting anxiously to read/watch its reviews. So I hemmed and hawed over buying the already available 28 or waiting for the yet unknown 26. I am glad I waited. After studying reviews of both lenses I chose the 26 primarily because of its reported superior image quality.Mounted on a Nikon Z 7II with ISO set to its base level of 64, the 26 tends to favor cool tones while generating the rich colors Nikon is noted for. After studying reviews of both lenses I chose the 26 primarily because of its reported superior image quality.Mounted on a Nikon Z 7II with ISO set to its base level of 64, the 26 tends to favor cool tones while generating the rich colors Nikon is noted for. Auto focus is quick and accurate in good light but may search in dim scenes. The 26's size and weight make for nimble use and allow also for handheld long exposures. This latter characteristic is valuable for an old guy like me who no longer has the steady hand of youth. Nonetheless, I've managed to handhold some stunningly acute photos at 1/10 sec. In addition, one of the things that makes this lens so fun for me is that it is a new (for me) prime focal length. Learning to use it properly keeps me fully engaged in the composition and the camera positioning stages of making a photo. It presents the stout challenges of avoiding distortions of perspective and of exaggerated object length. And, as with any new lens, it takes attentive practice to have images look like the ones in my mind's eye. I find it fun.I was a bit leery about review comments noting focus motor noise and vibration. The comments are true: the lens is audible and does vibrate lightly while focusing. I shot the first few frames indoors and my reaction was, "Oh, blast!" However, after taking shots outside I was mollified that the sound and vibration diminished. As I use the lens more and more both effects seem less and less apparent. So, all in all, I am no longer concerned. I had also read the lens hood falls off easily. I experienced that until I took a good look and saw the hood mounts just like a lens to a camera body. One only needs to line up the flanges correctly, push the hood firmly into place, and then rotate the hood a quarter turn. It locks in place snugly.Another fun challenge for me with this lens is staying within the compositional guideline that less is more. With its greater field of view than my favorite 50, the 26 includes a lot more area and so requires a careful survey of what to leave in and what to leave out. Being old school I still try to get my composition and camera settings correct in-camera so that I need only one frame without having to make edits in post. Therein lies the enjoyment of doing - as well as the satisfaction of creating a keeper - when I manage to score.I have now used this lens for a variety of applications and subjects. I am happy with the results. Consequently, I recommend the Nikkor 26/2.8 with the caveat to include in your decision to buy - or not - awareness of its tendency to hunt for focus when light is dim and that it may be more audible than what you are used to. Considering this proviso, my score is 4.5 stars.

I love this little lens!
20 March 2023

The small form-factor of this lens makes it a great option for making my Z7 a pocket camera. The lens is quick-focusing and sharp. My only complaint is that I can't put a UV filter on it for protection without the included bayonet-mount adapter, and then the lens cap is useless. Overall I'm really happy with the purchase.

Noisy but awesome.

Throughout the year I am usually hired or asked to attend events where I am both capturing and participating in whatever is going. So I often run a small point and shoot style setup so I can be a fly on the wall, capture the action, then discreetly stow my camera and jump right back into conversation or whatever else is going on. This lens has been absolutely perfect for that. It has been bouncing back and forth between my Z5 and Z30. I pick up the Z5 for indoor events where the 26mm and low light advantage of the full frame are much needed. And the Z30 when I know I will need a little more punch in which case the 40mm equivalent is perfect for my applications. When not needed both bodies easily stow in a back pack pocket, bino harness, or fanny pack. Image quality and autofocus has been superb on both bodies. The two reasons I did not give this lens five stars is first, it is the noisiest z lens I have used. This doesn't matter much to me but I know some people will care. Second, the front element protrudes when focusing making the included lens hood a mandatory accessory. This adds very little length to the lens but the hood itself is quite flimsy and mine does not lock in place. This is not a tremendous grip, the included lens cover is quite snug and works great, but I do with the hood snapped in a bit more securely.Overall love this lens and it has become my point and shoot workhorse.
