A Compact Z Lens for a Compact Z Camera
19 August 2022William

This DX 24-75 mm equivalent is the perfect size to pair with the Z50 when you want a compact, light, relatively unobtrusive kit for street photography or a walkaround lens. I absolutely love my Z6 and the S-Class lenses, but they are a bit much for travel when photography is not the primary mission. I have not yet done enough shooting with this lens to make any comprehensive comments on IQ--so far, so good--but the optical design advantages of the Z mount assure that it will be at least as good and likely much better than any comparable F-mount lens. More after an upcoming trip.

Originally designed for the Z50, this lens is what anyone who orders it would expect... low weight and small size. I use it on a Z7 which automatically switches the camera to DX mode... still 19 mpx to play with! One problem though was that the VR didn't seem to work. Before returning or exchanging it however I checked for updates and sure enough the most recent update (v. 2.1) corrects this very issue and the VR now works great! Hope this helps someone who ran into the same problem. As for the lens itself, it seems clear at all settings but it is not the best choice for low light situations. But for $300, how can you go wrong?

I wanted something similar to the 18-55 Dx lens I used on my d7000. This lens is pretty good consistantly with all zooms. I noticed when you enlarge the images taken at 16 they seemed more pixilated at 100-200% than a standard prime lens, but its wonderful quality despite that. If you need something really sharp then go for a prime lens. I love this lens for its convenience, quality, zooms, and it's so lightweight! Get this if you want something easy to shoot with. Get this if you need a good go to lens for quick portraits or snapshots. Get this for its price. Especially wonderful if you have the 50-250 and need a well rounded setup for events, family, and fun stuff. Get this for starting out as a photographer if you need something easy to use.

Good, cheap, amazingly tiny
3 December 2021

Its tiny size makes this lens special. A Z 50 with the 16-50 mounted on it is about the size of a small SLR body with NO LENS WHATSOEVER (see photo). Some people are disappointed by the plastic lens mount, but Roger Cicala of lensrentals dot com has written that plastic vs metal seems to make no difference reliability-wise. That's good enough for me. Mine has good wide-open sharpness at all focal lengths. Which is nice, because THE negative of this lens is that it gets slow fast as you zoom from 16mm to 50mm. You'll be shooting it wide-open a lot.

Great Camera & Lenses
20 November 2021

As a current Canon DSLR user, I was looking for a lighter, mirrorless camera and lenses to try. I really enjoyed the Nikon Z50 and found the lenses to be surprisingly sharp. The small size and significantly lighter weight made this setup a delight to use. As always, the camera and lenses were in excellent condition and I experienced zero problems with my rental.

Great lens with a Z50. Does not use the full sensor on other Nikon Z bodies.
1 May 2021

If you are looking for a compact Nikon Z lens, this is it. But is is really designed for the crop sensor of the Z50. It will work with the other Nikon Z bodies but will not use the full sensor, meaning you will not get the full MP capability of your camera when using this lens. The lens is very lightweight partially due to the plastic body. It is a surprising good little lens, but again best used with the crop sensor camera.

Super Lens / 3 Comments

For performance, image quality, and it's compact size, I would have given this lens a 5-star rating. I'm really glad I bought it with my Z 50, especially at its kit price during Nikon's recent sale. I knocked off 1 star for 3 reasons - the first one is a major pet peeve, the other two are somewhat minor, and cost $30 to resolve.First - Nikon, please... no one ever feels good buying lenses with PLASTIC mounts. You're not saving any significant weight, certainly not worth the trade-off. And how much money does it save in manufacturing? I'd be happy to pay you the difference for a lens with a metal mount. The same comment applies to your (otherwise amazing) 10-20mm DX lens, which I also own.Second - the rear lens cap. Again, charge me the $5 difference for the LF-N1 cap.Third - a debatable one I suppose, but... no lens hood included? I bought the HN-40 for $25.For the sale price of this kit lens, I can't complain about buying a rear cap and the lens hood. At the normal retail price, I absolutely would. But I'll always complain about plastic lens mounts. Is this lens a must-have for the Z 50? If you get the kit, for sure. But I wouldn't recommend paying full price for it.

Surprisingly nice partner for the Z50
15 April 2021

For its purpose, which is as a super-compact and light partner for the Z50, I have found it to be just about perfect. I was initially reluctant to go Z50 + this lens for a compact travel camera for a two reasons based on the lens (others based on the camera). First, I was irritated at the choice of f/6.3 for maximum aperture at the tele end. Second, I was irritated at 50mm for the maximum tele focal length. (Of course, what I thought I wanted would have made this lens much bigger and heavier and the combination more cumbersome, not the compact carry-around that it is.)In use, it has turned out to be a very nice combination suiting my basic objective of having a small and light carry-around camera that takes decent travel photos without worrying about carrying a ... MoreFor its purpose, which is as a super-compact and light partner for the Z50, I have found it to be just about perfect. So I'm not deducting stars for those shortcomings. The camera is amazingly tiny and light yet easy to use with ample controls, and the lens is a great partner for it. It goes to 16mm, which covers most of my carry-around needs for wide shooting for interiors, urban spaces and whatever comes up traveling. The sensitivity of the sensor means it's perfectly usable indoors, even at f/6.3. At 100% enlargement, the images are sharp and contrasty, pretty much to the corners. The camera EVF is a real pleasure to use. So the fact that the camera exceeded my expectations, and I don't need to swap lenses to meet its intended purpose, makes Nikon's compromises appropriate to what I really most wanted in this combination. Quite pleased. When I want more capability for more demanding shots, I have the option to schlepp around the D500 and D810 with a range of excellent lenses - almost any camera and lens combo of which weighs in at at least 3x as much.

Way Underrated
26 March 2023

I purchased this lens to go along with my Z fc so I wouldn't need to carry around the far heavier and larger Z 24-70mm f/4 S. I'm overly picky when it comes to lens sharpness and to my surprise this little gem is very sharp, even close up.The plastic mount took some getting used to but since it stays on my Z fc 90% of the time I've pretty much forgotten about it. It's plenty strong and there's no way it's going to break. Mostly psychological issue! I added a silver (sort of slightly dark silver) B+W filter and an inexpensive metal HN-40 lens hood that fits it perfectly looks great as if they were made for each other. The zoom range is well suited to many applications being equivalent to 24 to 75mm in the full-frame world. On one hand the mostly plastic construction doesn't feel as luxurious and some of the mostly metal lenses but from a completely practical point of view it keeps it light, inexpensive, works perfectly fine, and so in some ways is an optimum design for what it is intended to do. It produces pleasingly soft backgrounds when used very close up to the subject. Obviously nothing like you get from a faster prime but it still gives good separation of the subject from the background. Most of my other photo equipment is at the opposite end of the price and weight spectrum but that doesn't keep me from loving this little lens.Almost forgot to mention the fact that this lens has image stabilization (VR). This is a huge advantage on the Z fc body which has no IBIS.

pairs great with the Z50, but works well with the other Nikon Z cameras as well.
1 March 2020

even though this is a great lens that i would recommend for purchase. the lens is a bit small for me since i am used to the size of the bigger lenses. at only 4.4oz this lens is very light. i used this lens with my Nikon Z7 for a short time. the lens is so light that you may not notice that they lens is attacked to the camera unless you are looking at or interacting with the lens in some way other than having the camera hanging around your neck with a neck-strap.for those who have smaller hands and/or is used to smaller camera lenses and owns the Z50, this lens is a must buy for use as a primary lens.
