All the hype applies, yet, as I have elucidated elsewhere, the staff is sorely misinformed regarding removal, counter-clockwise, of the central axis cap. If one actually manages to get it off, the two barrels of the binocular will become noticeably loose. Nikon amicably promised to replace the one I needed to damage in order to remove, but it has taken six months to get it here. Their excuse: more than one item, but an unidentified number needs to be gathered in order to send the shipment from Japan. It's plain absurd...

pro: In general, I tested the product at viewing small objects at 60 yards and am relatively happy with the image quality. The product has detachable lens cover for the front lens that mate with the strap. The strap is pretty good and can be adjusted to hold the bino's at the correct height on the chest. cons: The binoculars have this plastic twist that is used to space the lens from the eye. The mechanism is plastic. I could see that with the twist extended and dropped, then it could break. The binoculars are not really useable without the twist spacers since your eyeball would touch the glass. Also, the back lens have lens covers, but I almost lost one of them the first time I used the product. There is no way to fasten the back lens covers to anything.

This was my 1st set of binoculars recommended by my brother. Other than the weight the lens and binoculars itself is pretty solid.

I was worried at first it would be hard to hold steady, but it is fine. I understand Nikon's Monarch series are even better than these, but I am quite happy with my Prostaff. The only thing that could be better is the lens caps. You are bound to loose them if you don't pay attention. Nikon, how hard is it to make eyes on the lens caps you can thread your strap through??? And not with the weird t-shaped slots that are on only 2 caps anyway. I quite enjoyed watching birds and boats at Lake Ontario with them last weekend
These binoculars are very clear the eye cups stay in place and don't overlook around. Very high quality i use them for 3d archery they are superb. Super performance.
I'm aware that nowhere in the product descriptions does it state that the Prostaff 5 12x50 is tripod-adaptable, but in my opinion it should be. I got these with the assumption they would be, being 12-power especially. Well, I was told that, as is customary, all one had to do was remove the central axis cap counterclockwise, revealing a 1/4"-20 female thread into which your run-of-the-mill tripod adapter would fasten. Wrong! If (and when destroying the thing) you get they cap off, the thread is just peculiar. It is flat at first, then around 1/4" in, there are threads, but none of my wide assortment of adapters will fit there. I phoned Nikon and was promised hesitatingly that an exception would be made and they wound let me have a replacement for the mangled cap ... MoreI'm aware that nowhere in the product descriptions does it state that the Prostaff 5 12x50 is tripod-adaptable, but in my opinion it should be. I phoned Nikon and was promised hesitatingly that an exception would be made and they wound let me have a replacement for the mangled cap (needed vice grips to remove; all scratched up). That was last December and I am yet to receive it!Optically, however, after they were mounted on a "universal tripod adapter",my discovery was that in the end they were worth the price, very nice views, even though not new, they look as if they'd received a few battle scars of late. So the rather pricey optic was, in the long run, worth it, I guess.
I purchased the Nikon 12x50 Prostaff 5 Binoculars for $219.99 with free shipping on December 13th for my husbands Christmas as guided by his cousin. The binoculars are what he wanted but he was very disturbed when he opened the box and a sales sticker of $159.99 was attached to the box. Needless to say he wasn't happy that I spent an extra $60. Not sure why this happened. If I had gone to Reno to the store would this have been my price?
I have a long relationship with Nikon, cameras and lens. The Nikon quality shows with these binoculars. One thing that I like is that you don't have to take of your glasses off to get a full field of view in the eye pieces. The 12x50 is manageable for long range viewing, with a little bracing of arms, All said these are top quality and build NIKON BINOCULARS.
my first pair of binoculars. a great start to overdue birdwatching! Great optics! Familiar with Nikon high standard for SLR. Was not disappointed with these field glasses. These have opened a new dimension to Nature's beauty.
I was not sure about the 12 X 50, read good and poor reveiws, but using them out fishing yesterday, pretty smoky from all the fires in the mountains, still could see as reasonably clear in the smoke and really clear in clear conditions, I wouldn't buy anything else
