A lot of great uses here

Having dials on the top reminds me of old film cameras, and I find it incredibly useful because I often shoot in Manual mode, and love being able to control ISO from a dial. You really can't go wrong with this camera. That being said, this is not a top-grade professional camera, and you'll notice that in certain areas, none of which were a deal breaker for me. This camera is a beast, and I love it. I cut my teeth on a Canon AE-1 Program shooting weddings with my dad, and I missed that 35mm feel. Enter the Zfc. I have ALWAYS shot Canons and Olympus, but this Nikon changed my mind. The creative control and skill requirements native to a 35mm SLR, fused into a pure digital body. Not only that the color saturation doing outdoor photography and portraits alike is amazing--I shot my wife and my father-in-law's Christmas picture and they both loved it. I give the Zfc two thumbs up. Portrait example (c)Priceless Treasures Photography.

Cuter than the Nikon Z50 if you master quirky controls

For about $100 more than the very similar Nikon Z50, you can get this retro-styled mirrorless APS-C camera that will remind old-timers of the Nikon FM film camera series. It uses the same sensor and has features similar to the Z50, but adds more dial-oriented controls for some functions, including shutter speed, ISO, and exposure compensation. Once you master these faux old-style controls, you'll be more comfortable with this stylish camera.Nikon does give you a way to return to more conventional operation, however. Set the EV dial to the C position, and you can add/subtract exposure compensation in five different ways, including a redefined control ring or with EV added to the i menu.Unlike the Z50, this camera has no flash, which is generally a good thing, as the Z50's flash is useful mostly for fill (and cannot serve as a controller for off-camera flash.) The fully-articulated LCD monitor is a big plus, especially for vloggers and shooting selfies. In Self-Portrait mode, the camera reverses the monitor image, so you see yourself as you appear in a mirror (or in Zoom calls.)The 21MP sensor is fine for most applications. There are a few limitations of this camera. The in-camera Flash Control menu system doesn't seem to work with the SB-5000, but functions fine with the SB-300, SB-400, and SB-500. (All other flashes can be adjusted using the flash's own controls.) Some adapters, such as the various Sony E-mount to Z-mount adapters cannot be used with this camera (nor with the Z50.) There is only one Fn button on the front of the camera, pre-defined as the WB control rather than depth-of-field button. Thankfully, Nikon has done away with the virtual zoom in/zoom out screen icons and replaced them with real buttons.Overall, a great entry-level camera with some advanced features, like time-lapse, interval shooting, and focus shift. Although Nikon is seriously lagging behind Sony (and even Canon) in the mirrorless market, the retro-design should help the Zfc to sell well, and, perhaps, even cannibalize some sales from the older Z50.

First mirrorless Nikon for me
19 March 2024

My first Nikon was a Nikonos II with flashbulb flash (I still own!), and hence a number of F-series DSLR's including F2, F3, FM, FM2, then D70, D90, D3, D5300, two D7500's and a lot of Nikon glass .... this camera was my first foray into mirrorless and it feels so comfortable like the FM and FM2 I used so much for travel. I still shoot with my D3. I took my two 7500's on an extended Southern Ocean expedition trip and they performed flawlessly. I chose the Zfc for my planned time in Buenos Aires and street photography - it was perfect with the short zoom. I also bought the 80-200 and the adapter for my older Nikon lenses which I have not tried yet. Recently I was back home and shot some wildlife pics with the 80-250 including the bald eagle pictured. I also shot some pics with the same lens at a night rodeo - I was much impressed with the auto focus there as well and the handling of the low light even at high shutter speed.

Fun & capable travel light kit
11 June 2024

I purchased the Z fc in 2021. Now in 2024 I still love this little camera for all the things which attracted me then.Although the Zf has become my 'serious' camera, I still grab the Z fc often moving the lightweight of APS-C while still having great image quality. The 'plastic' weight is actually an asset allowing an extra APS-C lens or two while still keeping the it light and compact.I find my travel/light street kit consisting of the Z fc, Sigma 18-50mm f2.8, Voigtlander 23mm f1.2, Nikon DX 50-250mm (awesome VR lens) and Nikon DX 12-28 (for wide) & Nikon's stellar SB-400 flash.I recommend this camera but caution that it's not an 'all around' prosumer option. Highly Usable
5 April 2024

A good balance between usability and functionality. I have been using a higher end FX frame Nikon and the number of dials, buttons etc was too much. ZFc has half the dials and buttons and you can easily shoot with only the viewfinder. It's titanium alloy body definitely does not have a cheap plastic feel like some reviewers have said. Gone from the top near the on-off switch is the easily accidently moved single frame/burst switch. I easily assigned it's function to the Fn button. DX lens lack the MF/AF and VR on-off switches of their FX counterparts. Fortunately some brain at Nikon put those controls in the I button menu on the camera. Now a button push, dial turn and another button push let you change the VR and AF. Higher resolution than my FX Nikon and fun to ... MoreA good balance between usability and functionality. My days with the Nikon Z fc
31 December 2022

Twenty-five of my twenty-seven cameras are of the vintage type. Their years ranges from 1956 to 1989, mostly 35mm with medium format sprinkled in. The Nikon Zfc reminds me of my Nikon FE/FM/FA series. Strong. Reliable. Ergonomic. A talking point. I had a great time with the Zfc as the utility felt natural with a blend of new age. My one complaint is that it does not have the weight of my vintage Nikons but that is a personal choice. The unit worked well producing sharp, clear, living photos. Besides with the right adapter, my current lens collection, including vintage glass, performed well. I have decided to trade in one of two Nikon DSLRs to get the Zfc. Nevertheless, the Nikon Zfc is a welcomed addition to my vintage and digital family.

Nikon Z fc has excellent image quality in a small package
27 March 2024

After going on vacations with a NIkon D750 and the Nikon 28-300 zoom lens, I was exhausted from carrying this camera setup all day.So I wanted a lighter camera setup, without giving up image quality.I recently purchased a Nikon Z fc and the 18-140 DX Zoom lens. Easy to setup and use. While the Nikon menus and options were not identical to the D750, they were similar enough that setup was a not complicated.Wow, the image quality from the Z fc is outstanding. Comparing the weight the weight I had to carry from the D750 to the Z fc, I was thrilled the weight was significantly cut by more than half.My only regret was I did not switch a few vacations ago.

Perfect Compact Camera!
1 November 2022

I have been doing photography personally for years, learned on a Nikon disorder and currently own, love and use the Nikon d850. I also used Fuji for almost 2 years as my compact camera and loved my x-pro3. I recently sold my Fuji and some of the lenses and thought I could stay with the 850. I quickly realized the size and workflow not what I was use to with Fuji nor the experience. The x-t5 is being announced today and the Fuji I was going to get is out of stock so on a whim, this one was available and had great reviews, specs I wanted so decided to try it. I am a manual shooter, love the dials and retro look. I have a collection of older Nikon cameras including a film fm10 that I am also currently using. This camera looks a lot like it. I'm happy to say I love it. ... MoreI have been doing photography personally for years, learned on a Nikon disorder and currently own, love and use the Nikon d850. I'm happy to say I love it. It's small it's light and allows me to be creative as I want or flip it in any kind of auto mode for my grandkids, my pets and can much easier go with me with them. My favorite thing I really struggled with is the difference in menus and going back and forth between systems. I never fully got use to it and it frustrated me. With this one it's seamless going back and forth between cameras. A few weeks ago I hiked up a mountain with my husband and pup and the Nikon d850. While the pictures are beautiful, not the experience I wanted. The zfc is much more practical for things like this. The other last thing I expected that I love was my granddaughter (8 years old) wanted to take pictures and I already had it set up and she had no issues and took beautiful pictures. I'm not saying it's better or worse than Fuji or anything else but for what I needed and how I shoot, it's perfect!

Review of NIKON Z fc Mirrorless Camera with NIKKOR Z 28 mm f/2.8 SE Lens - Silver
4 September 2024

Love my new Nikon Zfc especially with the quality of the photos I get out of it. Would love to try a different lens with more focus to see how it will work out with this camera. The vintage style of the camera is what really appealed to me, especially to have that nostalgic feel everytime I handle it. The flip screen is absolutely great for this cam especially for selfies or vlogging with friends. Definitely enjoyed shooting with it on my recent trip abroad as well. Overall, love this cam especially I am still a newbie in photography as its a perfect camera to enhance my skills as a new starter.
