What a wonderful little camera. There's truly a beast of a camera in that little body.I have a nikon D7100, but I hardly used it due to its size and weight. I've taken more photos with the Z50 in the few weeks I've had it than the 7 odd years I've had the D7100.Make no mistake, this is a sophisticated camera and has all the features an amateur could wish for and more. And yet if you chose to use in auto mode you can do with minimal input. The ISO ability is phenomenal; I'm truly blown away at how high I can shoot and still get great results. I did give the camera high marks for size for travel and great images. In my review, I highlighted three problems. The first problem - autofocus - has improved significantly via firmware updates so this is no longer an issue. This camera still is a no go for cold weather - sub 32F due to rapid battery drain (not even multiple batteries in my pockets helps at all when temps are sub 20F). This I now understand is normal for most mirrorless cameras and I will just need to use my DSLR. Yes. But that is part of the compromise when using technology. 75% of the year this camera gets 5 stars, but ultimately it's 4 stars because I still want to use this in the winter but am unable to.

I should note that I basically never use the 16-50mm kit lens - I've found that I am not really interested in this focal length (24-75 full frame equivalent), and although people love it, I've not had great results with it. To be fair though, I hardly ever use it - if this focal length is for you, I'm sure you'll find it more than adequate. I've been duly impressed by the 50-250mm (in bright daylight), with which I've shot all the attached pictures in MANUAL (again, beginner here). The level of detail that this camera/lens combo resolves is amazing - great for zoos, but if you want to shoot wildlife, you will probably want a bit more reach (even though 250mm on the Z50 crop sensor is 375mm full frame equivalent). I purchased a 50mm f1.8 prime F mount lens along with the FTZ II adapter, which I've found works well, and the autofocus is pretty zippy for the most part. I also have a Tokina 11-16mm f2.8, which is an excellent wide angle combo with the Z50, and far more forgiving than most lenses given the lack of in-body image stabilization. In general, I would recommend considering the FTZ adapter to have access to both native and third party F mount lenses, as the Z mount system still appears new and is rather more expensive. One thing I have struggled with is making sure to hold the camera very steady for the sharpest images - if you have a lens with vibration reduction/image stabilization, this isn't so bad, but it's very challenging with prime lenses. Of course at this price point and with a crop sensor, it's not surprising that the body is not stabilized. Just be aware that there is a learning curve to positioning/anchoring yourself, choosing the correct shutter speed, and programming a shutter delay if needed to get the sharpest images - probably a bit more work than a camera body with built-in stabilization. But, great practice for beginners. One thing I will note - the focus tracking for moving subjects, and the dynamic autofocus, could probably be improved - if you're truly looking to shoot wildlife in motion (especially small subjects), perhaps consider a camera with a more developed system in this realm (and maybe a full frame sensor). However, I did take the flamingo photo in burst mode with the 50-250mm - at a high shutter speed and in well-lit conditions, almost all the photos of one bird basically assaulting the other came out super sharp.Ergonomics: I didn't hold this camera before I bought it, but it is tiny and light. I am a very petite female and have small hands, but even with slightly heavier lenses I can hold the camera one-handed (wouldn't recommend shooting this way however - see above). The grip is deep and it is so comfortable to hold, the buttons and touchscreen are responsive, and with the pancake lens, this thing is almost pocketable. Even with somewhat larger lenses, this is very comfortable to wear on the same shoulder as another sling bag for several hours. One note is that the FTZ adapter (I or II) is somewhat thick, so will add a bit of length to adapted lenses. Even so, larger lenses do not feel awkward on this small body.I called this a gateway camera because about a month after I bought it, I had enjoyed shooting with it so much that I bought a second camera (micro four thirds sensor) with a ridiculous 100-400mm zoom lens (equivalent of 200-800mm full frame). Because the Nikon interface is so accessible, I didn't have any issues adjusting to the dials and settings on the new camera. Mostly I bought it because the MFT lens system is very compact, and I would have needed a second body for safari anyway. I know most beginners eventually upgrade to full frame, but I can't really see myself even doing that - this camera plus the MFT one meet my needs in small packages. The Z50 may have an APS-C sensor, but it is highly capable of producing fabulous images with great detail and warm, saturated colors. Could not recommend more.

[Rewarded Review] Good way to test the mirrorless waters
25 February 2024

I have had the Z50 for over a year now. I originally got it to assess if I wanted to move to mirrorless or stick with DSLRs. My Nikon D800 DSLR was showing its age and I was trying to determine if I should get a D850 or go mirrorless. My first experience with mirrorless was with a full frame Canon RP. I was unimpressed. It met the video requirements I had at the time but its photography performance left me wondering why people were switching to mirrorless. Three years later, I decided to give mirrorless another chance. Three years later, I decided to give mirrorless another chance. The Z50 provided me a less expensive way to test the waters before taking the full plunge into mirrorless systems.Because I use these cameras primarily for photography not videography, my comments are limited to using the Z50 for photography. In getting the Z50, I wanted to understand the differences between Nikon mirrorless and DSLR cameras. I wanted to test compatibility with my older F mount lenses. I wanted to experience using mirrorless features and an electronic viewfinder. I wanted to see if the AF system was better. And, I wanted to try some of the new Z mount lenses. The Z50 performed much better than I expected. It blew my D800 out of the water. The AF was hugely improved. The quality of the image seen through the electronic viewfinder was not an issue. The dynamic range and low light capability of the sensor was well within my needs. The setup menu for the Z50 is usable but things can be hard to find at times. The ability to configure buttons for the way I want to use them is a very nice feature. Handling, metering, ergonomics are very similar to what I've grown to expect after 40 years using Nikon cameras. I do like the hand grip of the Z50, and missed it when I held the ZFc.As for F mount lens compatibility, all my AF-S lenses adapted perfectly, Other Nikon lenses performed with the limitation Nikon indicated in their literature. One third party lens did not work, but by looking at a compatibility chart I had known that before I got the Z50.The two kit lenses I got with the Z50, the 16-50mm and 50-250mm Z lenses worked well and helped me understand the quality of Nikon's Z mount lenses but I wish I had foregone getting these lenses. They are slow and don't work well for my style of shooting.I was so impressed with cheaper, entry-level, Z50 that I took the full plunge and eventually got a full frame Nikon mirrorless camera, with even better AF and dynamic range, along with IBIS, and a plethora of other features I never dreamed of when I was happily shooting with my original FM2 film camera. My original plan was to sell the Z50 when I got my full frame camera but I had so much fun with it that I kept it. Now, I primarily use the Z50 for travel and street photography, when size and weight are driving factors determining what camera I grab. Along the way, I have picked up some Nikon and 3rd party APS-C lenses that better suit my photography style.

[Rewarded Review] Great camera, dumb flip-screen design.
17 June 2024

Everything about this camera and attached lenses thus far is excellent. It's light, durable, weather resistant, easy to use. The 50-250mm lens won't really be useable without a tripod. The only strong complaint I have about the camera's design is the swiveling screen. It's useful for shooting low or high (you can angle the screen to view while holding the camera above or below yourself), but the swiveling screen is intended to be used for "vlogging," essentially a video selfie shot while you're handholding the camera. The screen flips DOWN, to beneath the camera, so you can view the capture while doing this. The grip simply isn't large enough to stably hold the camera in reverse (filming yourself), so you're going to be buying a grip to use the camera this way. ... MoreEverything about this camera and attached lenses thus far is excellent. It's light, durable, weather resistant, easy to use. The grip attaches to the bottom of the camera. You probably see the issue. Flip screen is totally unusable in this manner. I can't imagine a feasible way to use it as intended. Very dumb design. This is compounded by the touch controls on the screen; if you try to flip it down while using a grip, it will be near your hand, and you will likely hit the touch screen, modifying the shot.In reality, you'll just learn to shoot reverse "selfie" style without seeing the capture.

[Rewarded Review] I am always trying to balance Size and Weight to Q

The Z50 is small, nice and small, with good physical controls and frankly fantastic kit lenses. I hope and pray they give us a few fast Dx primes one day, but the 16-250 mm range of the 2 lenses, with very light weight and outstanding optics make me happy. I do like the fact that one mount will service Dx and Fx sensors, as it is with other mounts out there. I am at home with Nikon ergonomics, they make sense to me. Images are more than brilliant. I haven't felt this much satisfaction in a long time. Whatever they have done with this 20 Mpx sensor, they've done it right. Incredibly low noise and the airplane photo shown is a 50% crop. I am so happy that this all fits in my fanny pack as I walk around no one knows what's in it. The autofocus video, which i don't use much, is still better than I was able to get out of an a6400 - in continuous. Bottom line, this works, is very affordable, gives great image quality and I want MORE Dx .... More, do you hear Nikon, MORE Dx on Z mount.

[Rewarded Review] Many features for a camera beginner

I know barely the basic on these types of cameras -( for years all I’ve used was the iPhone camera on SE model - Lol ).After visiting the store and speaking with Thayne, a Nikon trained store employee, she took the time to explain this camera in detail and made it sound fairly straightforward. One advantage, it’s Auto-Set ( point & shoot, even if you use manual zoom ). Rotate shooting mode dial, now I can quickly capture my dogs running and jumping over whatever. Sport action shots are very clear. ( if I ever had the idea to Blog - haha, > this camera also has video mode ! ( having still pics of my dogs are fine, but at same time I can video what they’re getting into. Yes, that was said, while in Video Mode- Still pics can still be taken! There are many other ... MoreI know barely the basic on these types of cameras -( for years all I’ve used was the iPhone camera on SE model - Lol ).After visiting the store and speaking with Thayne, a Nikon trained store employee, she took the time to explain this camera in detail and made it sound fairly straightforward. Yes, that was said, while in Video Mode- Still pics can still be taken! There are many other features and I’m slowly learning about them. ( I did buy a book for dummies online to help ). Yes, I could have chosen a more basic model, but how soon would I have said “video would have been nice, I need a longer Zoom lens ?)This Nikon came with a Two Lens package, although I did on Thayne’s recommendation, purchase the On-Sale Low-Light Interior Lens…. Again, she was well knowledgeable. Using this extra lens, inside my parents home that doesn’t offer great natural sunlight, this lens is very able to capture all the light needed. I will be learning more about this Nikon over time, but this has been my experience so far. I did immediately change the neck-strap, a tethered lens cap, and a hard sideed / foam insert & waterproof camera / electronics storage case.

[Rewarded Review] Nikon Z50

I am giving this five stars because this is my absolute first legitimate camera I have ever owned outside of a phone. I love it so far. I have been wanting to do wildlife photography and the Nikon Z50 has really set me up to start that journey. I researched a lot of cameras, and although Canon is a the big brand for a lot of photography, I really just dug the Nikon. It is comfortable in the hands(mine are relatively small), the photo quality is great, the battery life is average. I was able to take around 350 photos during my first session. As far as the price goes, this is really a deal with the added lenses. The 50-250mm specifically. If it weren't for this lens to start out, I wouldn't be able to take the photos I have, at a relatively decent distance. [Rewarded Review] Well balanced

Got this Nikon to try mirrorless after seeing its popularity. I have used compact and DSLR cameras of the top brands for decades. They all have a speciality that makes them unique. Even though the Z50 is classified as entry-level I find it very capable and customizable too. All modern cameras produce outstanding photos and it is up to the user to find the sweet spot.I recently purchased the Nikon Z50 body and the DX 24mm f/1.7 lens which is a wide angle that also allows for close ups with a nice blurry background. The crop sensor is more than enough for my casual shots and I find this camera a good upgrade to medium DSLRs like the Nikon D5600 or the Canon EOS SL2, that I also use.The bright electronic viewfinder and the monitor provide real live view. It has a good grip, it’s light, good for carrying it around but not pocketable. Using the P mode and all the default settings, it is very easy to use, and you would be taking great shots from the first day. Then you can learn more about its settings and maybe move to M (manual) mode if you dare.I did get a spare battery because the average is only 300 shots per charge, although it would improve if you skip the review after each shot and use more the viewfinder and less the monitor. The USB cable provided allows uploading to your PC (with Nikon software) as well as charging. The wifi transfer finally works via app.Very much recommend the Z50.
