I've been in the Nikon camp since childhood and the inception of the venerable F3 HP, became thrilled with this new thing called autofocus when the F4 came out and have since owned and used every flagship body from the brand and others. I no longer have the Sony's to look up to and I rather prefer the implementation of the AF to either of the other two or three great systems out there. I'm no videographer, but the video I've seen out of this body is nothing short of amazing and I often work alongside some truly great videographers, so I'll leave that part up to them. If I now miss a shot, it's definitely not the fault of the hardware. Anymore.

Since my first Z camera I have been waiting for Nikon to make a true professional mirrorless camera with video capabilities that could match those offered by Sony, Canon and others in the industry. The Z8 brought the heat I was looking for but the body was just a little too large and heavy for the way I like to film and produce content for my clients. The Z6III was the camera I had been looking for. The N-LOG footage is outstanding to work with. This camera is a great companion to my Z9, they share similar DNA, but each has its own advantages (I look forward to using the Z6III for more street photography).

This has led us to be extremely scrutinous in what we purchase. We specialize in weddings & events and need exceptional and reliable performance and also a quick ROI to be considered. The Z6III meets all criteria.Having D500s as our workhorses the bar was exceptionally high. Years ago we tested the Z6II and that sorely missed the mark in a number of ways. Bright. Bright! While I prefer a TTL viefinder and loathe digital this one is acceptable enough for me to accept. Switching from a TTL to this digital is very eye opening The lag is minimal and the picture review is fantastic. Not having to take the finder away from your eye for anything is much appreciated. The only issue I have is the contrast. It's way too much for my taste. Maybe there is a way to adjust it I haven't found yet.Image Quality: Dead on with a plethora of tweaks to suit every taste.ISO/DR: Holy you know what! AT ISO 20,000 the noise is the same as the D500s ISO 800-1600. I had to review it twice at 100% to be sure I was interpreting it correctly. It's so good I don't need to use a flash in 90% of the conditions unless I choose to.File Size: Just the right balance between quality and size to make storing tens of thousands of images annually financially manageable. Also, fast write & read times.Ergonomics: The body is a bit smaller than I'm used to but it sets in the hand OK and the buttons are in the right places. The Mode selector dial is something that is very welcome. I hated the press buttons on the D500. The weight with lens is substantial and comforting. Not too heavy or light for me. I might get the grip because I like the feel when shooting portrait/vert.Battery: I didn't have to purchase one extra battery at all because all of my D500 EnEl work just fine. Love that!Articulating Screen: FINALLY. I don't know why anyone would not love this feature. It gives you choices instead of being stuck on the back as a flip out only.Kit Lens: This is not a kit lens it's a precision piece of glass. Sharp, relatively aberration and distortion free. The only thing is that it's a paltry focal length 24-70 is not nearly flexible enough for our needs.Video: This is what we've been waiting to upgrade for. Choose your settings and you get near perfect out of the box (unless you're using Raw then you're grading) Focus is silent and the auto zoom function is sweet. Even at fixed f/4 the low light capability again eliminates the necessity of an aux light source.Cons:Viewfinder: This is a personal thing directly related to over 3 decades of TTL shooting. It's not natural for me. I don't like looking at a video screen but if I have to this is the one albeit contrasty.Body Strap: FOR PETES SAKE NIKON. Can you finally make a clip on strap and not that convoluted in, over & out nonsense. I've always hated their method of securing the strap.Availability: I hate when Nikon doesn't have enough stock (I get the reason). We do have one and we have place an order a couple of weeks ago for a second body with the 24-120 and are hoping to take delivery this month sometime.I guess those aren't really significant cons just pet peeves.If you're currently pro shooting Nikon DSLRs and have been waiting for a significant reason to move to mirrorless then this IS the body/system for you.
I was very excited about this camera and have been waiting for a mid range smaller body than the z8 with good ergonomics and fast autofocus since the z9 came out. I am less than pleased with the image quality and eye af accuracy (it front focuses 9/10 shots) of this camera compared to my Z6ii. The images are much noisier, and generally softer as focus is off. I also thought the dynamic range hit that every youtuber wants to talk about was just hype but it’s noticeable in high contrast landscape situations.RAW images on SnapBridge load onto the iPhone as a blank white picture with the meta data. Nikon support could not explain this. I am less than pleased with the image quality and eye af accuracy (it front focuses 9/10 shots) of this camera compared to my Z6ii. The images are much noisier, and generally softer as focus is off. I also thought the dynamic range hit that every youtuber wants to talk about was just hype but it’s noticeable in high contrast landscape situations.RAW images on SnapBridge load onto the iPhone as a blank white picture with the meta data. Nikon support could not explain this. I have no issues with the Z6ii files.Things I love about this camera are the fast focusing, ergonomics, and insane Image stabilization. This camera was so close to being the one for me. Maybe I just had a bad copy?? Unfortunately I will be returning and waiting until Nikon irons out this seemingly beta version of the camera. Two steps forward for the Z6 line with image quality taking a noticeable step back.

I don’t need a ton of pixels, but I do need solid focus and significant FPS.I’ve been using the Z6III for a few weeks and I notice positive differences from my Z6II. This camera is a big upgrade to the system I was using. The autofocus is snappy and the 3D tracking is amazing! This may be a bit bigger than my previous camera, but I’m enjoying the bigger grip and the ergonomics are just right. I’ve paired this with the 24-70 f2.8 S, and I’m blown away by the performance. Video options are pretty extensive but I’m glad there are many options. If you decide to shoot raw, be prepared to purchase larger capacity CFexpress cards as the files are enormous. One downside is that there’s no option to adjust shutter angle so you’re stuck shooting 1/50 shutter speed at 24p. Despite this, video is beautiful and easy to work with.I’m very happy with my purchase of my first full frame camera. Nikon has knocked it out of the park with the Z6III.
Reading some of the reviews, you'd think this camera wouldn't be great. (Actually, before setting raw video from SDR to NLog, I almost sent it back). I owned a Z6II, and did back-to-back tests where I couldn't tell any sort difference in quality, so from that point on I could breathe easy - the Z6ii was great in it's own right...For stills, I've owned Nikons from my first D50. I purchased this as an upgrade from the original Z6. While a lot feels familiar, the differences are key, primarily AF and shooting options. AF is now on par with the Z8/9 and ZF, which is to say, great. I don’t feel like I’m fighting the camera trying to shoot moving subjects. I’ve taken it out and shot an air show, dogs at the dog park, birds at the park, and so on. The new stacked sensor allows for some ridiculous frame rates, 14fps mechanical shutter, 20/30/60/120fps electronic shutter. The higher fps rates are either full res jpeg (30, 60fps) or cropped jpeg (120fps). In those settings you also get pre-release capture which can be set from .3-1 full second. The body is somewhat thicker and a tiny bit taller than the OG Z6, it feels like a slightly shorter Z8. That change was welcome but unexpected. Ergonomics was the biggest reason I went Z6iii over the ZF. I actually bought one of those and returned it because I wasn’t a fan of the ergos. Z6iii is perfect. Well, almost, I hate the flippy screen. I knows it’s a personal preference, but I’m not a fan. I would’ve preferred either the original screen or the one on the Z8/9. It is what it is though.Overall, I love this upgrade and have zero regrets over my purchase.
I'm a real estate photographer/videographer and I purchased this camera for its upgraded video and autofocus performance over the Z6 II. Boy does it deliver! After a couple of weeks of use, I am amazed at the level of camera you get for the price. The video quality and full time AF performance blow the Z6 II out of the water, even in low light. I am also a hobbyist wildlife photographer, and this camera is outstanding in that arena! The subject detection is unlike anything I have used before, and makes birds in flight much easier! The burst rate/buffer are also out of this world, and the new electronic viewfinder is bright and beautiful.There are only two things so far that take some getting used to, coming from a Z6 II.
