This is my first full-frame camera, and my first mirrorless camera. Before this I was shooting with Nikon DSLRs for about 4 years. This camera was absolutely worth the upgrade. It took me a while to get used to how light the camera is, and how easy it is to shoot with. Also bought the FTZ adaptor so that I could continue to use my existing lenses while slowly upgrading my currently lenses. I use it mainly for landscape, nature, street, and travel photography. The only complaint I have is that I cannot use my existing memory cards on this camera. This camera requires CFExpress memory cards, not SD cards. And there are no converters on the market yet. Other than that, the camera itself is amazing!

If Nikon were just to make a Z 70-200 f4, it would be great.Overall, the Z7II is a slightly better camera but in terms of picture quality, there is little to no difference, so if budget is an issue you lose precious little getting a Z7 instead. I'm very happy with mine and will probably not upgrade until necessary.

I had rented a Z7 with firmware 2.20 a couple of months ago, so I had spent nearly two weeks acclimating to it before I made a purchase decision. I also own a D850. For fast action where a much louder camera isn't an issue, the D850 will remain my first choice. For anything else, the Z7 is fantastic. It's an incredibly easy migration from Nikon DSLRs due to the familiar physical control setup and menu configuration. Even the grip feels familiar, aside from the fact that the shorter body means one's pinkie finger may feel like it's left hanging.My two favorite features are the EVF and the quieter operation. In dim light, the EVR is almost like having night vision. It's much easier than an optical viewfinder to compose and judge focus in dim light. Even in ... Even in mechanical shutter mode, the Z7 is probably 80% quieter than my D850, and the ability to go dead silent while still having good autofocus capability and being able to brace the camera against my face is light years ahead of silent mode on the D850, which required holding the camera out and resorting to autofocus that was prehistoric in its performance.Despite ongoing firmware and performance improvements, this is still not as good a fast-action, moving-subject-tracking machine as the D850. Whereas my D850 is always in 3D tracking mode with AF-C and back-button focus, I'm more likely to use single point and AF-S on the Z7, especially if I'm shooting with f/1.4 glass and need focus to be spot on.As of this review, I've just installed Firmware 3.0 this week. It is supposed to make the Z7 autofocus behave more like 3D tracking mode in the D850/D500/D5. I expect this to be a welcome improvement as I get used to it, but I don't expect it will actually function at 100% of my D850s real-world performance. Additionally, I have grown accustomed to my D850 with the D5 battery in the battery pack/vertical grip, which allows 9 fps. The Z7 generally has a lower hit rate AND a notably slower frame per second count.Using F-mount glass has been perfect. Not only have I not had to worry about buying Z-mount lenses immediately, but the use of my old F-mount primes has been improved, since I get in-body image stabilization on my FTZ-adapted F-mount primes. That opens up some incredible new shooting scenarios--being able to hand-hold my Nikon 105mm f/1.4 at 1/50-1/60 second with crisp results. A lens like that also requires no AF fine-tuning on a Z body, but such a fast, shallow depth-of-field lens ALWAYS required meticulous fine-tuning on a DSLR body.Overall, I have no regrets with the Z7 purchase. But unlike my D850 purchase, which left my D810 in the dust in every possible shooting scenario, the D850 remains superior to the Z7 for faster action, dual card slots, frames-per-second, and the ability to bolt an all-day battery to the bottom of the camera that also adds vertical grip and buttons.
Nikon has done some great things with the Z7 that keeps it competitive in 2023. For one, the firmware update brought a highly responsive eye tracking feature which helps me out in portrait photography. It still struggles a bit on focusing a subject in low light condition but the eye tracking makes up for it. Come from a D800, which is no slough, the Z7 is a nice upgrade. Now my images are sharper than before.Docked a star because the only card it accepts is CFExpress Type B. My current magazine of memory cards are SDXC or CompactFlash.
I already have a Z6 II. Wanted Z7 II but price was more than my budget. Nikon took $1000 off the Z7 so seemed like a no brainier. Only a few things to be aware of coming from the Z II models. Smaller buffer maybe an issue for wildlife or fast action. Also the virtual horizon is the big round compass like on the D7200. I didn't like it at first but it's ok, I prefer the Z6 II implementation. And only CFexpress card slot, but prices have come down on the cards.
I should have bought D850 a long time ago! But I was not sure if it worth the money. I have been using a D610 which is very decent for an amateur like me. I was seeing more and more situations that D610 not being able to handle very well for me, like the sharpness (I have a couple very very good lense that supposed to be very very sharp), low light performace on high ISO, and the spot metering accuracy... so I decided to buy a D850 when the price came down a bit. To my real surprise though, D850's performances are just so much better than I expected!!! All the issues I've seen with my D610 I mentioned above are not there anymore! I'm able to produce very sharp images and with my photos a lot more like those professionals'.
This camera incorporates all of the great controls and ergonomics that Nikon has fine-tuned over the decades and basically couples that meets or exceeds the resolution of medium format film. It took me a little while to get my head around this fact...but in comparisons, it's undeniable. Mirrorless tech will be great when it reaches maturity, but for my purposes I don't see any clear advantages at this stage, and a few potential disadvantages (startup lag, reduced battery life, rolling shutter, etc.). Note that my rating here is on the D850's performance as a still camera -- while it does provide very high quality video (and even better timelapse at 8k), autofocus limitations in video mode keep this from competing fairly with other cameras. In summary: even including RZ67 Pro IIs, Hasselblads, etc -- the Nikon D850 might be the very best still camera I've ever used. It delivers amazing quality in an extremely smart, comfortable, rugged form factor. It'sreally that good.

I've only shot Canon and is what I was used to and do still have all my equipment and don't really plan on getting rid of it but wanted to expand my horizons so I eventually decided on the Z7 to start. Overall after just waiting a couple nervousto arrive,, I can say I am very happy with my purchase other than the lens shaking around in box and camera having a little dust here and there and it missing the camera strap in which it stated was in the box. On the plus side it did have a 64g card stillin the slot so guess it was a wash. They could check that stuff and make it is clean and firmly packed with everything actually listed.
