I bought this for an eight year old 'Hi Tec' brand rain jacket that was not repelling water. I hand washed the jacket along with a Kathmandu Pockit-It Rain Jacket, and a Danali jacket. Following the cycle as per the instructions the seam sealed tape on the Pockit It jacket, along with the waterproof pockets of the other two all seemed to partially dissolve, and separate from the material. I've since bought glues and tape to repair the issues to the pockets, and I've just had to rip away the seam sealed tape on the Kathmandu jacket. It was a really disappointing experience, especially given the Kathmandu and Denali jackets didn't actually need restoration. It's topped off by the fact the Hi Tec jacket still didn't repel water like it did when new.I also note the ... MoreI bought this for an eight year old 'Hi Tec' brand rain jacket that was not repelling water. I employed the same effort, soaking the jacket, and using the toothbrush to scrub the white and red regions. The brightness really began to return to the white, and the red piping and slashes also brightened up after some scrubbing. The wash tub water was really ugly and dark with all the removed grime. I used a separate plastic tub for the rinsing, three good dunks and swishing to get out as much residue as possible, and then a final hose off and hanging it up outside to air dry.I/we are very pleased with the results, and can recommend the Nikwax. We obtained excellent results, had no concerns with any odors afterwards, and it rinsed out cleanly. We have worn the jackets since, with no issues. Well worth the cost and effort to protect the investment we have made in quality riding gear.

I washed my raincoat and it felt different, softer and I was worried it had lost its waterproofing. So I bought this, was a bit worried I’ll admit to use it in case it ruined my coat. However, there were no issues and immediately I could feel the difference in the feel of my coat. Been out in the rain and it just runs off again. Coat looks and feels brand new. Would recommend this product.

I washed my Gore-Tex motorcycle gear with this product. After driving to Arizona in 2021 and Alaska this past June 2022, I felt it was time to wash the motorcycle jacket and pants. My gear came out of the washer clean using this as the cleaning agent. After drying the gear, I then sprayed the NikWax TX. Direct Spray on to help restore the Gore Tex properties (if possible). The jacket and pants have not let water in since being washed and treated with NikWax.
I've been using Nikwax for over 30 years and I have never had any issues. Fast forward to this year, using Tech Wash and TX.Direct has created spots, like oil spots (descriptive since it isn't oil based or anything, but you get the point) on several articles of clothes now: two The North Face FUTURELIGHT jackets, and two Montbell Gore-Tex Infinium rain jackets have spotting issues after using Tech Wash and TX. Direct. Rewashing with regular detergent and regular water did not resolve the issue. Nikwax hasn't provided a response, although TNF warrantied one jacket when I thought it was a one off issue with TNF jacket, but given the issue persisted with three other jackets, I'm narrowing it to Nikwax as the culprit. Nikwax hasn't provided a response, although TNF warrantied one jacket when I thought it was a one off issue with TNF jacket, but given the issue persisted with three other jackets, I'm narrowing it to Nikwax as the culprit. Oddly, a Gore-Tex Paclite Plus and Dry.Q rain pants did not exhibit the spotting despite being washed in the same load as the two Gore-Tex Infinium and FUTURELIGHT jackets. The spotting doesn't seem to affect waterproofing, since I did a water test in the area of spotting and there was no leakage. Not sure if affects breathability in those areas. Aesthetically it looks bad. Don't know if it is going to be permanent or temporary. I may return the jackets to see if the companies will warranty, which TNF did for the first jacket previously. Don't know if this is an odd chemical reaction or what to the inner layer, but given that Gore-Tex Paclite Plus is 2.5L and Dry.Q is 2.5L and didn't suffer from spotting, while Gore-Tex Infinium is 2L and FUTURELIGHT is 3L which did suffer from spotting, I don't see anything consistent about the issue. If it was a washing and drying technique issue (after over 30 years of use with no issues I can't see that as culprit), then it should have affected the two rain pants, too.
My outdoors gear is not cheap and I need it to perform for as long as possible. I used to wash my dwr treated pants and jackets in regular laundry soap and soon realized it was causing my gear to wet out and in some cases leaving a residue. I have a dirty bin for jackets, pants, shells etc. that I wait until it is full and do a load with techwash. It renews the water repellancy and I have been known to go for more than 2 years with a rain shell before I have to re treat it with dwr treatment (I get the nikwax wash in to do after washing it with techwash). It works best if you can toss the items in the dryer after, but you can hang dry as well.
This is one of two products you need for washing and treating Gore-Tex and other waterproof and breathable garments. It's what restores the waterproof nature of the garments. While a little pricey, compared to ordinary detergent, Gore-Tex and other waterproof and breathable garments are not ordinary clothes so you need to treat them with the proper chemicals. Fortunately, it can be done in a regular washing machine, but requires two wash cycles because there's two products you have to use.
Purchased and followed instructions to the letter. Tried to wash 3 ski jackets and 2 pants with entire bottle. My flylow pants with taped seams had multiple tape seam failures. 20k mm jackets now repels no water at all. Set a stain in another jacket. Super disappointed and will never purchase Nikwax products again.
NIKWaW TX DIRECT WASH IN WATERPROOFER. IT IS NOT SPIFFING. You use Nikwax Tech WASH First. Then Nikwax TX Direct to waterproof in a woolen wash 30 degrees use 2 full capfulls of Nikwax in wash as it says in the washing instructions. Finish TX DIRECT WASH leave to DRY .and it does not waterproof your 110.00 NoRTH FACE SHELL GORE TEX JACKET. It is as usefull as a Marks and Spencer Brown Paper Shopping Bag in the Rain. Best thing to do is dont buy a Gore Tex Jacket For 110.00. Save yourself some money buy a Portwest Sealtex Pvc S450 Jacket For 43.00 and you dont need to Waterproof the Jacket and it will last 10 YEARS so that is my of the day for you. Thankyou
excellent and cheap alternative for maintaining water repellency and clean outdoor gears and clothing. we all know that excellent outdoor gear for it to last long and maintain its water repellant characteristic would require small bit of attention and help. and since these dont come cheap, this is where this excellent solution comes into play. a recommended product that can provide more years of usage for outdoor gears.
