Winston Smith works for the Ministry of Truth in London, chief city of Airstrip One. Big Brother stares out from every poster, the Thought Police uncover every act of betrayal. When Winston finds love with Julia, he discovers that life does not have to be dull and deadening, and awakens to new possibilities. Despite the police helicopters that hover and circle overhead, Winston and Julia begin to question the Party; they are drawn towards conspiracy. Yet Big Brother will not tolerate dissent - even in the mind. For those with original thoughts they invented Room 101. "Nineteen Eight-Four" is George Orwell’s terrifying vision of a totalitarian future in which everything and everyone is slave to a tyrannical regime.

If I could give this book 10 starts I would and if you haven’t read it I remind it HIGHLY. I can barely get through a conversation anymore without recommending this book. It’s so incredibly smart and well thought out and still so relevant to today’s society/ world. It is such a good book for creating conversation even to people who haven’t read it. It’s so amazing. 10 STARS ⭐ ⭐ ⭐ ⭐ ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

I bought this copy of 1984 because;1. It stated "Quality Very Good" (it was 'Acceptable' at best).2. I wanted the book cover as advertised (it was a different cover)Why do WOB permit their sellers to mislead customers so often?I now see this 'store' as way less reliable than Amazon. Cheaper - yes, but in both senses of the word.Could do better...

But it means also the ability to believe that black is white, and more, to know that black is white, and to forget that one has ever believed the contrary. No change in doctrine or in political alignment can ever be admitted. For to change one's policy, is a confession of weakness.I understand how, I do not understand why.If you want a picture of the future, imagine a boot stamping on a human face - forever. From the age of uniformity, from the age of solitude, from the age of Big Brother, from the age of doublethink - greetings!

The book arrived in good & original condition.I read the book in approx 1974 & have just read it again 1/2 a century later in 2023...I think modern readers would consider the book a little laborious & repetitive, but quite a few of Orwell's predictions have become reality in different parts of the world.

A year to remember (or is it?!)

This is classed as one of the classics and as it was written a long time before 1984 some of George Orwells foresight is spooky. The tale itself is vicious and depressing and I found it hard going and was happy to get to the end. I nearly gave up on a few occasions but made myself carry on with it. I'm very glad that the current world is not a world like 1984 but sometimes, items on the t.v. and things that happen are quite scarily near to the storyline. Trust nothing and no-body.

Brilliant and horrifying. It's a ''Brave New World in 1984. Hope there's enough gas to leave this Animal Farm.''

Absolutely brilliant book. Sad to see this dystopian future unveiling...If not worse in some areas tenfold. Even Winston could drink at a bar.

My son bought me a bookmark last christmas with a list of his 50 must-read books to plough through. George Orwell's 1984 was on it. I think I had to read some of it at school but can't really remember that far back but knew about it through film & TV etc. I found it a very fast reading book... you don't really want to put it down for long as it seems there is always another question or other thought provoking scenario that you want to get on with finding out how it unravels. Well that is perhaps the only negative about the book...does it unravel? many questions/ideas are left unexplored but heyho! Thats the novel and the way the esteemed author packaged it. It is an extremely interesting read and thoroughly recommended especially for those who can get into character ... MoreMy son bought me a bookmark last christmas with a list of his 50 must-read books to plough through. A note on this Everyman's Library edition (with the black-shirted, mustachioed George Orwell on the dust-jacket). Printed in Germany 2003 It is a robust hardback that looks good with or without the dust-jacket and I am certain this copy will be traded and read for a couple of generations at least. Well Done the quality-police at Everyman's!

Not at all lightweight - well written and un-put downable!
9 August 2018

A classic. George Orwell had an uncanny knack of predicting how certain trends in society could be exploited. Their weaknesses used to the determent of society as a whole. Free speech and even to be in love could (and in the book) was forbidden and punished. Constant surveillance with the use of cameras was everywhere. The spirit to resist was broken and the reader follows the progress of a doomed love affair.

Strange political story with romance incorporated.

The story matches our times. It's a science fiction novel but elements of the story are same or similar to events and societal structures of today. It's as if Orwell was trying to predict future. A strange novel. I'm 2 thirds of the way in so I'm curious to find out how it wraps up and resolves. The book itself is of excellent quality paper and card.
