The Ninja Espresso and Coffee Barista System features a "do it all" mentality, with the ability to brew both coffee grounds and espresso pods. In typical Ninja fashion, though, the options don't stop there: you can select from a whopping 9 coffee ground brew sizes and 3 espresso pod sizes, brew "classic" or "rich" coffee grounds, or set either side of the machine to brew directly over ice. There's even a built-in milk frother!Unboxing was a straightforward affair, with the machine tightly-packed to avoid any shipping damage, although the box contains lots of plastic and styrofoam. The Barista has a reassuring heft to it, belying the complex machinery that certainly must reside within. It's not a small machine by any means, but I was surprised how well it fit on my counter, even underneath my standard-height cabinets. It's quite a bit deeper than my previous coffee maker, but not all that much wider. I only have to slide it out partway to open the lid on the coffee basket, something I had to do with my previous brewer as well. The machine remains firmly planted and takes a bit of effort to move, but this means you're in no danger of bumping it around or nocking anything over. All the various included accessories fit right into the Barista for use and storage, with only a special cover plate for cleaning the espresso-pod-side of the machine needing to be stored elsewhere. Everything feels very sturdy; I appreciate the thickness of all the plastic pieces and the finishing of everything. Nothing seems cheap or likely to break, and the glass carafe has a large, sturdy handle to aid you in using and cleaning it without breaking the glass.Although the Barista is largely black plastic, it's generally well-grained, and Ninja has included enough stainless steel accenting to make the machine feel about as premium as its price would suggest. I'm a big fan of the way the control panel is implemented. When off, you see a dim clock in the middle, and not much else. As soon as you press the power button the display springs to life, with all the various options dimly illuminated. Pressing either the "grounds" or "espresso" button then brightly illuminates only the options for that brew method, helping to keep things straightforward. Most functions are controlled with the central rotating knob, which is easy to understand and a joy to use. After filling the large (removable!) water reservoir and running an empty cycle through both sides I set out to experiment with all the various options Ninja offers with the Barista. Brewing coffee grounds is as simple, if not simpler, than a stand-alone brewer: simply load the basket and filter, using Ninja's included coffee scoop with helpful measuring options, select your brew strength with the grounds button and rotate the middle control knob to your preferred size. The display indicates your brew size with an icon and a fluid ounces readout, which is a great touch, especially for selecting the right size cup or mug if you're brewing directly into one. There's a helpful flip-down mug platform to reduce splashing into smaller vessels. The carafe warming plate can be turned on or off and the temperature and duration of warming can be adjusted as well. For the sake of comparison I brewed a few carafes of coffee using the same grounds (a "medium-dark" roast) and roughly the same capacity as my previous, well-reviewed brewer. Ninja's "classic" brew setting produced a smooth, slightly bland cup, while the "rich" brew setting made a stronger, more flavorful coffee. Neither cup tasted exactly the same as my previous brewer, of course, but I found the "rich" setting to make a satisfactory brew with noticeably more flavor than the "classic" setting, with a strength that can handle my usual amount of creamer. Again, your mileage may vary, and it's worth trying different grounds and different settings to find the right balance. Both brews came out nice and hot and stayed hot for awhile on the warming plate -- almost too hot, so I might try adjusting the temperature setting of the plate. But I'd rather it be too hot than too cold. I'm happy to say the carafe pours quickly but smoothly, and the brew basket is totally drip-free. This is due to Ninja's lever-based brew basket opening, which requires you to flip a level to either open or close the drip valve. This allows you to pause brewing early for a quick cup of coffee, but it also allows you to shut the drip valve off when brewing is complete, preventing drips from hitting the warming plate and making a mess. While it's not automatic I much prefer the ability to open and close the valve myself, and the Barista is smart enough to stop brewing and ask you to open the drip valve if you forget, preventing the machine from overflowing.I'll admit that until I set up the Ninja I'd never had a espresso pod-based drink, but I've long been curious. Having used the popular coffee pods for many years at work I've been accustomed to a weak, watery brew, so I was a bit apprehensive about the abilities of the Ninja's espresso brewing. I'm happy to say my fears were not confirmed! If you've used any type of pod-based system, you'll find the Ninja very straightforward. Simply load the pod into the machine (it goes in sideways and only fits one way, which is good), press the lever down and make your size selection. Like the coffee grounds side of the Barista, the espresso side lets you select three different standard sizes in addition to the over-ice setting. Unlike coffee pods, however, espresso pods produce far less liquid volume, as they're designed to truly make a shot-sized brew. This will take some getting used to if you're expecting it to fill your entire mug like a coffee pod would. Also unlike coffee pods the Barista will drop the used espresso pods into a built in holder when you lift the lever after it's finished brewing -- a nifty convenience that lets you easily store up to 20 pods until you're ready to dispose of them. Most pods are aluminum, meaning they're very recyclable, either by emptying them yourself or through a recycling program. Definitely look into pod recycling to avoid the amount of waste you'll otherwise produce.I tested the Barista's espresso brewing with a classic espresso roast pod, since I'm pretty familiar with their coffee flavor. The Ninja quickly produced a smooth, delicious espresso shot, with crema on top and everything. The roast was delightfully dark and flavorful, totally unlike a coffee pod, although it's truly a shot, not a cup, in size. Trust me when I say you'll find the flavor an absolute revelation if you're used to coffee pods. The attraction here is the ability to make coffeehouse-type drinks, too, with the Ninja's built in frother, which is easy to use and effective. You'll definitely want to heat your milk up first, though, as cold milk quickly cools the espresso-sized brew and leaves you with a lukewarm drink.Overall I really like the Ninja Espresso & Coffee Barista System. It offers tons of options in a well-made and relatively compact footprint, backed by Ninja's excellent warranty and customer service. Coffee grounds and espresso are both brewed quickly and easily, with espresso pods producing a wonderfully-tasty brew. Grounds flavor is actually noticeably different with the Barista's strength settings, which I appreciate, and the "rich" setting makes a strong enough brew to handle cream, milk and/or sweetener. My only major quibble is on the espresso side, where the adjustable cup tray is positively tiny: none of my large-ish coffee mugs will balance securely on it, and I've taken to removing it entirely when brewing. It's definitely sized to fit traditional espresso mugs, which are much smaller, so keep this in mind when you're brewing. That being said, the Barista is absolutely worth a look if you want a ton of features and flexibility in one good-looking countertop machine.

To be honest, I wasn’t expecting this Ninja Expresso/Coffee Barista to be any different. But this Ninja Espresso & Coffee Barista makes that process easier and faster. Sure, puritans will say I’m cheating by using the capsules, but I’d rather “cheat” and have a nice espresso before heading to work than just not having it because it takes too long to get it right. Having the option of making just one single cup when it’s just you or filling up a mug for take-away is so practical.I loved the Over Ice function which keeps the ice from melting quickly, avoiding the watered-down taste of most iced coffee. We have been trying almost every recipe in the included book and they all come out just as good as you’d get at a specialized store or coffeehouse. Sometimes better because you can adapt to your liking. We’ve tried lattes, cappuccinos, and even a cookie coffee. Creamy and smooth were the words that came out of our mouths. We have a separate milk frother, but with the one built into this system, we are not sure we need to keep that one anymore. Unfortunately, the one thing we didn’t like much in this system was cleaning the milk frother as it is not as easy as everything else. Not a huge deal, but I had to mentionOverall, we are very impressed and definitely recommend. It is like having a coffeehouse in your kitchen. In the long run, you can recoup the cost in a matter of months just by not going to that coffeehouse every day.

The Ninja machine brews regular coffee grounds in the coffee pot side but it’s unable to grind the beans or use a regular coffee pod, which is more common today for a quick cup. If you would like to use the Milk Frother, you have to microwave the milk in a cup, froth it, and then make the espresso pod over the milk. The Ninja Machine is taller and wider than my other two machines put together and has significantly less functionality. For the bulkier size of the Ninja® CFN601 Espresso & Coffee Barista System, I would expect it to have a lot more features than it does. I was pretty disappointed and I would say that if you’re looking to replace an existing coffee maker and espresso pod style machine then this is not the machine for you. My individual machines have more functionality on their own and my espresso pod style machine heats and froths the milk on it’s own and therefore the Ninja® CFN601 Espresso & Coffee Barista System is not a replacement for either machine. However, if you don’t already have these other two coffee pots and you’re not looking for a pod style regular cup or a grounds style espresso cup, then I would recommend this machine to you.

You can push the one on the right for Nespresso pod coffee or the one on the left for ground coffee. This machine does not make espresso starting with whole beans or even with ground coffee. You can only made espresso using the pods. Also, there are only 3 drink sizes possible with the Nespresso pods. You can make ristretto 25 mL, espresso 40 mL or lungo 110 mL or brew over ice 30 mL. There are larger Nespresso pods, but only the original capsules fit in this machine. There is also a mechanical frother. If you want warm froth they recommend heating the milk in the microwave before frothing it. The mechanical frother works very well. All in all it is a nice machine, but if you are interested in a real espresso machine, this isn't it. It really is a fancy coffee maker that can make espresso with pods.
The initial impression I had when opening the box for the Ninja Coffee/Espresso maker was it appeared to have a lot of attachments such as the pod ejection box (for the espresso side), water tanks etc.. But as I began to use the device to brew both Coffee and Espresso there were some things I liked and some things I did not, listed below:ProsClean looking device, is not an eye sore appliance that sits on the counter like some of its competitors in this area. Many brew options, you can choose to brew small cups up to a full pot of coffee which was a neat feature compared to the standard "full pot or none" approach. Its straightforward use was refreshing to see as it appeared complicated at first blush, once you've figured out the capabilities of the device (which ... MoreThe initial impression I had when opening the box for the Ninja Coffee/Espresso maker was it appeared to have a lot of attachments such as the pod ejection box (for the espresso side), water tanks etc.. There was assumptions made based on the name and picture of the unit. The espresso component only takes a specific Nespresso style pod. I was hoping to move away from pods to save some money, but buying brand specific pods does not achieve this goal. Not a huge deal breaker but more of a nuisance. This does not come with a re-usable filter for the Coffee side of the unit.Overall the coffee maker's quality is good, it does brew faster than some traditional drip-style coffee makers, however, this is the best feature, it's a really good drip style coffee maker but nothing more. The espresso side of the unit is disappointing due to the requirement that I must use a specific branded pod and cannot take beans for that side of the process.
To get it out of the way 1-star is removed due to a lack of convenience in an overall all-in-one sense. I realize that moniker/term is not actually in official nomenclature of the Ninja Espresso & Cafe Barista System, but it certain advertises itself as an all-in-one and attempts to lure you in that way. What *would* make this a 5-star item? A grinder. The footprint of the system isn't that large, so adding a simple grinder to the body if one couldn't be implemented in whatever dead-space exists within the current setup means the addition of one wouldn't result in a massively countertop stealing device.Capsules are inherently wasteful, not everyone enjoys them, and with this particular offering, you are limited to only the Nescafe cups. Now, that isn't necessarily a terrible thing (as they are one of if not the best in that market) but on the other hand it means you have to have a separate grinder as most people wanting to get into this area of brewing aren't using pre-ground beans.Wrapping up my only genuine con: I would gladly pay an additional $100-$150 for the above to be implemented, even if it meant a slightly larger footprint. These are supposed to be convenience items, let's make them that top to bottom, inside and out.Ok, with all that out of the way, everything else is stellar, especially at this price-point. I have a mid-range system from a more boutique brand that costs 4x the MSRP of the Espress & Coffee Barista System, and some of the materials (plastic vs metal) on the exterior are 1:1, meaning Ninja did a more than decent job ensuring frequently touched areas are going to stand up over time. You are provided platforms and means to get your coffee fix in whatever way you desire: caraffe, mug, shot, everything has a surface that tucks away when not in use to provide the optimal interaction with the Barista System. It might not seem like much, but it helps with splashes, spills, so on and so forth. The menu and interface are beautifully minimal. The rotary knob handles most all adjustments and is extremely intuitive, even if at first you may find yourself pondering how you're going to control *everything* via this rotary/push button focal point. Read through the manual if necessary, or just start spinning and pushing things, it is extremely straight forward - you will find that it makes sense in no time.Really good coffee machine with all the bells and whistles you would expect at this price-point all the while introducing some new things to the experience, quite beautifully integrated might I add. Recommended if you are in the market and haven't upgraded your current machine in ~5+ years. If you just purchased something 1-2 years ago (that wasn't a $20 barebones drip-brewer) you might be a little underwhelmed with the experience and might want to keep an eye on Ninja in the near future for a possible improved Barista System with an integrated grinder...fingers crossed.
I already own, and use daily, a Ninja basic coffee maker. That legacy Ninja has been the most reliable and easy to use coffee maker I’ve owned, and that includes a variety of manufacturers. BUT, I’ve never had a more elaborate espresso maker, so the Ninja Barista is my first foray into a multifunction coffee maker.I’m happy to report that after a week of usage, the Ninja Barista is great! As I did with my past devices, I make a half pot of regular coffee every morning. The Ninja Barista brews this as fast as my previous Ninja, and with the same quality. Also, it’s just as easy to use, but with the water reservoir on the back rather than the side. I wondered if that would be an issue; it’s not… it’s just different. Also, it’s just as easy to use, but with the water reservoir on the back rather than the side. I wondered if that would be an issue; it’s not… it’s just different. From an appearance perspective, the reservoir on the back is more attractive on the kitchen counter. A nice touch is the simple dial control for selecting the brew amount. This is very intuitive and allows for precise sizing. There’s also a button for choosing brew strength, including an over ice option.Meanwhile, both my wife and I are using the espresso capability. She is not a fan of complex technology, so I was curious to see how she’d react to the Barista… she loves it! The espresso capability is on the right side of the machine, but fully integrated with the regular coffee maker. What I mean is that it uses the same water reservoir and central dial control to start brewing. There’s a separate button on the right to choose brewing size (ristretto, espresso, lungo, and over ice). Additionally, the Barista includes a side/extending frothing wand. That “frother” is also easy to use, and quickly/effectively froths cream or milk. Finally, an important element of a coffee maker’s usefulness is the cleaning process. I’m happy to report that it’s easy to do with all liquid and coffee exposed parts easily detachable and dishwasher safe.I highly recommend the Ninja Espresso & Coffee Barista!
Just picked up this new Ninja Espresso & Coffee Barista System and so far, I am enjoying it. This system is so easy to use, and I love the large carafe size at 55 ounces. On the days I work from home, I fill up the pot and keep it fresh on the warmer all morning long. There is so much to love in the convenient little coffee and espresso system. If you are a fan of espresso but can’t make it to a coffee shop, this machine is compatible with Nespresso capsules so you can have that fresh cup of espresso in an instant. Simply lift the lever on the top of the machine, insert the Nespresso capsule, close the lever, select the espresso type, then let the magic happen. Simply lift the lever on the top of the machine, insert the Nespresso capsule, close the lever, select the espresso type, then let the magic happen. The used capsule drops into a container and is stored until you are ready to dispose of the capsules when the bin is full, the bin can hold 20 used capsules. The bin is also part of the adjustable cup tray, so you can adjust the height of the tray to best fit the mug you are using when making espresso. What makes this machine stand out from others is that it has Barista Plus Technology, which means it is a 19-bar high-pressure system that creates a café-quality espresso with a crema that is so smooth. There are 4 sizes and styles of espresso this machine can make. The Ristretto comes in at .85oz, the Espresso at 1.35oz, Lungo at 3.75oz, and the Over Ice at 1oz. The Ninja Barista System has a fold-out frother that helps to create the perfect cappuccinos or lattes, right in your own kitchen. The frother is easy to use and easy to clean. The arm on the frother that has the blender twists off for easy cleanup. The frother can be used for both hot and cold froth depending on what you are making or personal preference. The espresso portion of this machine is quick and easy to use, creating a smooth and perfect cup of espresso every time. I love the convenience of it if you are looking for that little extra kick. This Ninja Barista System is also a grounded coffee machine. I use the coffee-making capabilities more than the espresso-making abilities in my daily routine. I absolutely love the brew this machine throws down. The machine does a wonderful job and I have yet to have a bad coffee in the morning, this machine has never let me down. I have never had a coffee machine where setting the brew time for the next day was this easy. I have always had to battle every machine I have ever had when trying to figure out the timer, it was like I had to re-learn how to do it, every single night. Not with this machine, it is so easy! It was the first feature I tried out after I set the machine up. All you have to do is press “delay” and then follow the prompts on the little wheel display. Nothing better than waking up and having the coffee be hot and ready for you. The machine even has its own coffee grounds scoop that attaches to the side and has an easy-to-read measurement guide, so you know how many coffee grounds to add depending on the size of the cup or carafe you are about to make. The coffee size-making options are awesome. You can make a single cup of coffee all the way up to the 12-cup carafe. There are a total of 9 sizes of coffee you can make, small cup, Cup, XL cup, Travel mug, XL Travel, ¼ Carafe, ½ Carafe, ¾ Carafe, and 12-cup carafe. The coffee can also be brewed in 3 different types, Classic, Rich, or Over ice. The water reservoir is removable and holds up to 60oz of water, enough to fill the carafe to the top once. The top of the water dispenser is tight and has not leaked on me. I love the handle on the reservoir it is very secure and ensures you have a good grip, so you don’t drop it. The coffee side of the machine also has a warming plate that has adjustable times, up to four hours, adjustable heat, low, med, and large all to keep the perfect temperature to your liking. So far, I love having this machine as a new addition to the kitchen. My wife has told everyone about it as she loves it too. My wife and I went nuts on buying all sorts of new espressos from Nespresso and we have become even bigger fans of espresso since using this machine. The machine brews both espresso and coffee perfectly and evenly and even at the perfect temperature. Ninja did a great job on this machine build, it is solid and has no cheap jiggly parts, and it is very sturdy. I highly recommend this coffee machine!
I kept reviewing espresso machines but realized I may be too lazy to actually go through all that work and not like espressos all that much. I love my regular drip and instant coffee so this machine is a definite upgrade. Now before you go and say “This isn’t a real espresso machine” you’re not completely wrong, but it’s a really great coffee machine regardless.I gush about my coffee maker. I make a carafe for guests, single drip for myself, and then get fancy creating mock coffee shop drinks. It’s a great alternative to buying Starbucks or Dutch Bros every morning. The machine has a frothed but it’s not a steamer. I buy various sweeteners, froth my dairy/plant based creamer and choose between the Ristretto, Espresso, Lungo, or over ice setting for the nespresso ... MoreI kept reviewing espresso machines but realized I may be too lazy to actually go through all that work and not like espressos all that much. I also love the measuring spoon for the coffee that hides on the side of the machine. Everything is neatly designed and has a pleasing aesthetic.I have saved so much money making my own coffee. And for those that say you would rather pay than waste time making coffee…well the same long line it takes to wait for your coffee at the fancy coffee shop is the same time it takes to make a delicious home brewed coffee.Once I understand espressos more I may upgrade but for now, I have no regrets on this purchase.
This is my first "fancy" coffee maker. I have had drip coffee makers and two different "pod"-type coffee makers that were just okay. This one does it all! Well, one exception but I'll get to that later. I tend to use this for drip coffee, making two cups at a time and it does a fabulous job. There is a water dispenser in the back that you do not need to fill each time and it will alert you if it needs filling. You can set this to start at a time of your choosing and can keep the coffee hot for several hours which is great. There is also a spoon attached to the side to be able to be able to measure your coffee grounds. The pod side also works very well. It takes Nespresso Original sized pods (you do not need to get that particular brand) and has a holder to catch the empty ones so that you do not need to fetch them out each time. Other reviews I have read said that the pod side comes out not hot but I found mine to be plenty hot during each espresso brew. There is also an attached milk frother to help make drinks like lattes and cappuccinos. The only negative I have found for this coffee system is that this frother does not heat the milk but I knew that going in (and the directions say to microwave your milk for 45-60 seconds). I would imagine that a coffee system that does heat and froth would cost 2-3x the price of this one, so I'll stick to the microwave. All in all, I am very happy with this coffee maker and plan to use it for all my coffee needs going forward.
