Excellent update to a classic game. The game is exactly the same with updated graphics and a couple of extra game mechanics. I very much enjoy the new expert mode that allows me to limit my levels to whatever I want. Definitely makes it more productive for level grinding in earlier parts of the game. The original game was absolutely beautiful from beginning to end. Such a rich story with very engaging gameplay. Anyone who had played prior Xeno games would expect nothing less though. The difference is that this one was given the love and attention it deserved. The fact that they could even remaster this game is clear indicator of that. The facelift is beautiful. I would only play the original on emulator so that I could truly appreciate the world. Even with higher resolutions, this version blows the old one away. It's just so freaking pretty. You feel immersed by the world as you explore every nook and cranny of the map. Questing is so much easier too. I actually find myself taking on side quests due to the ease of completing them now. Rather than running aimlessly through the maps, you actually have leader dots on the map that help you complete fetch quests in record time. I didn't even bother with them on the Wii version.Anyway, I highly recommend this game to old Xeno fans and newcomers alike. If you enjoyed Xenoblade Chronicles 2, there is no way you will be disappointed in its predecessor.

I missed playing the original version of this game and ended up playing Xenoblade Chronicles 2 first, and then buying this remaster for the Switch. This definitive edition looks a lot nicer and has some quality of life updates as well. Although I would say that I think I like the sequel better, this is an excellent adventure JRPG. There are a lot of cutscenes and story. The fighting is a bit more simple than in Xenoblade 2 since you don't have pairs of characters. It's a lot of fun to customize your team's appearance and even special moves. As you move through the game you collect better weapons and meet new people that join your team. The story has some pretty heavy emotional points and some mystery that keeps you pushing forward. If you’re a newcomer to the Xenoblade series then the Definitive Edition is the de facto place to begin what is an undoubtedly epic journey. I love Xenoblade and while I freely admit the resolution is less than stellar in docked and handheld mode, the game looks completely fine. I wish the Switch was more powerful to accommodate a higher resolution but what we have is adequate. All in all the Xenoblade series is a must own if you enjoy epic spanning jrpg’s.

My expectations going into Xenoblade Chronicles were average, I had heard the series was good and that alot of people really liked it. I unfortunately missed getting the first release on the Nintendo Wii, so this is my first experience playing this game.I am genuinely suprised and amazed as to how much I have enjoyed (and am still enjoying) playing this game. I have put in over 90 hours since I got it on release day, the game is perfectly balanced with the main story, sidequests and reasonable challenges. The story is so deep and detailed in that nothing appears confusing; there is so much to the world and characters of Xenoblade Chronicles and the narrative slowly introduces you to how the world is and how everything works. The story is so deep and detailed in that nothing appears confusing; there is so much to the world and characters of Xenoblade Chronicles and the narrative slowly introduces you to how the world is and how everything works. There hasn't been a time where I have been confused in the narrative. What I like is how seamless everything is, I barely feel drawn out of the game with loading times. Every environment and event happens when it needs to, the game doesn't need to pause and load a battle arena or a different room, everything just happens as it is. The Gaur Plains is a perfect example, the map is expansive, detailed, you can see enemies in the distance just wondering in the environment, going into battles feels instant. Another aspect is the sidequests. Some sidequests in videogames are minimum at best; do an extra thing to get an extra item. In Xenoblade, you are encouraged to speak with the NPCs, explore the towns, cities and overworld environments and work out the relationships between different people. This makes the game feel infinitely bigger than it already is, you can choose whether to assist in fixing family or political issues, collecting items for development and fighting off additional monsters. The more you do, the more popular you become in these areas, your relationship with your party members also increases and this can have an impact on weapons and how your team fight together.Overall, music is amazing, gameplay is well balanced and theres so much to do, I highly recommend this for any RPG fans or anybody looking for a series to really get into.
Now this is a definitive edition of a video game. This game had originally released two console cycles ago on the Nintendo Wii. It was a underrated game that most people were unaware about until it became a cult classic which brought it Mass attention. Due to that attention, the price of the game ended up skyrocketing and allowing further sequels and side games to the series. Xenoblade is now considered to be a must-have game for whatever system it releases on. There are so many quality of life improvements and visual improvements to this game, I found myself enjoying it more now than the first time I played it. The world is absolutely huge. If you see it you can go to it, if it sparkles you can collect it, if it walks you can fight it and if it talks there is more likely a possibility that you will have a mission for you to complete. There is so much stuff for you to do in the game that you will easily put in over 100 hours. The combat system is rather unique and take some time getting used to however once you do you will begin to master the battle system and even change your controller layout to further enhance that experience. If you love RPGs you will love this game!
The original Xenoblade Chronicles is my favorite RPG of all time, so I had high expectations for this remaster. Luckily, the right creative decisions have been made 9 times out of 10 to bring this incredible game up to more modern standards. The biggest overhaul, the visuals, is very successful given the limited budget available to the dev team. Character and enemy models look expressive and detailed, and textures on the game's beautiful environments have been greatly improved. The game runs at a stable 30 fps now, and overall I'd say it looks very nearly as good as Xenoblade 2 on the Switch. Menus, load times, and management of inventory and quests are also much more convenient than they were in the Wii version. Menus, load times, and management of inventory and quests are also much more convenient than they were in the Wii version. Font sizes are much bigger and more readable, especially for handheld mode. This is without question the definitive version of the game.My sole complaint is that the remastered music is a bit of a half-measure. Many of the original game's orchestral/rock songs were perfect already, and have been fiddled with in this remaster to include bad synthesizers and inferior new vocals. Luckily, the original soundtrack is still available and can be chosen from the menu at any time. The collector's edition, at least in North America, comes with a hardback, 250-page artbook. As video game artbooks go, this one is just okay. It features a one-page interview with the director, existing artwork from the original, and a small amount newly created for the remaster...but many pages are taken up with just in-game renders of the characters' many outfits. It's a nice touch but I'm not sure I'd spend the extra $20 if I had a do-over.I highly recommend this game to fans of JRPGs with long, detailed stories; fans of open-world exploration; and people who appreciate good music and voice acting.
This is a remake of a wii game so with that in mind its graphics are solid and the combat unique and intresting. The game arrived a day before eta which is great. My only gripe is that since the condition of the game is discribed as brand new I was expecting it to be sealed but it wasn't so I don't really know if it is brand new. I have brought games from this before and they were sealed when stated that they were brand new. In any case the game works fine it just that I don't if its new or not apart from the decription since it came naked without a plastic wrap.
Xenoblade Chronicles might just be my favorite game of all time. I bought it for the Wii ten years ago just to support it, since it very nearly didn't receive a North American release. It turned out to the most epic and wildly imaginative game I had ever played. I also bought the 3DS version and now the Switch version, which makes this the only game of this size and scope that I have played through to completion three times. So on a level of pure gameplay, I can't recommend Xenoblade enough. As for this Special Edition, we get a really beautiful and comprehensive art book that is a lovely compliment to the one that came with the Special Edition of Xenoblade 2. The missed opportunity here is that a soundtrack CD was not also packed in, as it was in other regions. ... MoreXenoblade Chronicles might just be my favorite game of all time. The missed opportunity here is that a soundtrack CD was not also packed in, as it was in other regions. This game's music is amazingly beautiful and deserved a showcase in this edition of the game, for which much of the original Wii music was remastered or re-recorded. But I won't even dock a star from this review over that, since the game is such a work of genius that has finally gotten the HD makeover that its beautiful, epic world has always deserved. If you've never played Xenoblade before, then get yours hands on this masterpiece and enjoy!
I first purchased Xenoblade Chronicles for the Wii when it came out in 2012. For reasons I can't explain, I never got very far into the game. I would then buy a New 3DS and Xenoblade Chronicles 3D and I did get much deeper into it, perhaps because of the dub only audio. With it coming to Switch, i was determined to play it this time and I did. 156 hours to do mostly everything, including all but 19 of the achievements. Nor did I play the extra content, Future Connected.Xenoblade Chronicles was a rather fantastic JRPG with good music, a complex story, and some sluggish quest mechanics. When you start playing you are told that quests are completely optional, they won't impact the story at all, but they do help. Problem is doing these quests basically requires you keep talking to every NPC with a unique name over and over again. This causes relationship (affinity) to change with not only you, but with other NPCs. As this changes you get quests. It's like talking to everyone around you in hopes that eventually somebody will like you enough to ask you to get them something from the grocery store and then you go fetch some items for them. With much of the time taken doing this, it can grow dull especially when said items may only appear in rare treasure chest drops. That said, that's my only real complaint aside from translation issues from lame localization. The story like most Xeno games deals with things like religion, race, and psychology. Things are not always black and white. The music has been updated and sounds a bit better than it originally did, but the original version of the music is there if you prefer that.I said it 8 years ago, I'll say it again... The environments in this game seem ripped straight out of MMO, Final Fantasy XI. They are nostalgic to me and I love exploring them. There is a day/night cycle in which enemies can change. They are often huge in size and can sometimes be a little empty feeling, but if you venture out into the real world, not every bit is covered with something to see. Sometimes an open field is just that, an open field.Combat is actively busy almost like an action game. You only really control the party leader (which can be changed) for the most part, and depending on how you're leveling up and the equipment you're wearing, it can be very challenging. There are skills to level up and change which alter how groups chain attacks together or even their role in combat.Enemies range from organic to machines. From small to gigantic. You will encounter enemies your level and you will encounter enemies meant for the end of the game that will kill you in a single hit. You might even fall off a cliff a few times and die. Death is not punished though which is fortunate. There is no GAME OVER here. When you die you simply return to the last landmark location (places you can fast travel to) you were near without exp loss or anything. After 156+ hours, it was satisfying to finally play and finish this game, especially since I own 3 versions of it. Now I might get around to finally playing Xenoblade Chronicles X or 2, both of which I also own and never played.
I really loved this game, and judging by the 120 hours I invested in completing the main story and as many side quests as I could, I’d say I got my money’s worth. Now, I never played the original release on the Wii. I tried the new 3DS version, but I struggled with the 3DS smaller screen and never completed it. Then Xenoblade Chronicles 2 and the prequel for it came for the switch and I completed both. In sight of this release of the first game for the Switch, I was a little afraid that playing back this older game would make me not like it or get a dated feeling from it; but that was not the case. I feel like it holds really well on its own and there are enough differences regarding the story, the characters, and the combat compared to the other 2 franchise titles ... MoreI really loved this game, and judging by the 120 hours I invested in completing the main story and as many side quests as I could, I’d say I got my money’s worth. In sight of this release of the first game for the Switch, I was a little afraid that playing back this older game would make me not like it or get a dated feeling from it; but that was not the case. I feel like it holds really well on its own and there are enough differences regarding the story, the characters, and the combat compared to the other 2 franchise titles on the Switch to make it unique. Also, I can say that this switch version did it for me. I played it docked in order to be able to see every detail of the combat on the TV, which is important I think since a lot happens in the screen at once during the combat sequences.Something I really liked about this game, is that there’s no single way of becoming more powerful in case you’re stuck with a boss or some other powerful monster: you could potentially just level up by defeating a bunch of baddies, but there are other ways like doing side quests (and there are tons of those!), you could buy/trade/sell items you find on your journey in exchange for armor /weapons, you could also increase your affinity between characters by swapping them around and have them fight together for a while or give presents to each other to make them battle more effectively, you could craft new gems that boost your offensive or defensive capabilities when applied on your equipment or you could just explore a new area on the map that’s not your goal (the game rewards you for every new area you discover and grants experience points) and in the process fight monsters to become stronger and get new items to fill out the collectopaedia (which also gives you armor/gems for items of the same tier or area collected), etcAnother thing I was impressed with was the combat and the uniqueness of all the characters. In my case, everything became much clearer when I started swapping characters around and decided to use other characters instead of Shulk, the main character. Understanding how each characters’ talent art and other normal arts tie together is crucial in determining which ones to equip at a time and which characters to bring overall to a boss battle or for regular battles in a specific area. The story overall is very well told and has a depth I really enjoyed; plus it features some very interesting twists and turns. Also the characters are all very likeable and don’t feel as cliched as other games of the genre can be; and they all show evolution. As an extra touch I found nice, I started my game with some extra money when the system detected I had played xenoblade Chronicles 2 in the past and had a save file for it (and I did beat it as well!).Also, even after you beat the main campaign, there is still more fun to be had with the possibility of a new game+ (which allows you to inherit some of the items/achievements/equipment you acquired in your playthrough into a new one) and an epilogue, which adds a few hours. In conclusion I loved this game and would encourage any RPG lover that hasn’t tried it to give it a go. A personal tip: don’t be afraid of experimenting (swapping characters around, even if it means controlling a character other than Shulk, swapping arts, trying different gems, etc). I loved that they decided to release this game on the Switch and that I played it till the end.
