If you require low, slow and maintained, you can’t go wrong with this. It’s simple, intuitive, has all the right features, and for the price it can’t be beat. So far, I couldn’t be more pleased.

I bought a new car battery showing 12.88 volts (full charge) on my multi-meter and hooked up the Noco Genius 1 expecting it to flash green or be solid green indicating a full charge. Instead, it flashed red denoting it was less than 75% charged. I gave it a couple hours til it reached 13.18 volts and it was still flashing red and charging. The charger was hot and I disconnected it. Since it was cheap I'll keep it as a manual trickle charger. If you don't have a multi-meter your just guessing and could over charge the battery. The Genius5 has a battery recondition function (wet cell only) that actually seems to work. I have brought a couple of dead batteries back to life that 2 other so-called "recondition" chargers failed to do. They will charge wet cell, gel, AGM and lithium batteries, ( also 6v lead acid) but you have to select the battery type manually, by toggling through the selections. I have a truck that mostly sits in the garage. Every time I need to back it out of the garage, the battery is dead. I know that just sitting isn't good for batteries, not to mention this battery is several years old. Now keep in mind, this is a large amp battery for a SUV, which was so dead, a turn of the key and I didn't even get lights on the dash. I stuck this little charger on it and it took a day and a half, but it charged completely. Ok, now I'm beginning to get a tad impressed. The only negative I can find, it has a single button to select one of several charging modes, and LED's to indicate which option you have chosen, and those LED's are pretty much self explanatory, as well as an advanced mode where you have to push and hold the single button to enter advanced charging mode. For example, if your battery is so bad, the charger cannot detect there is even a battery hooked up, you can tell it to go ahead and start charging anyway which is a really nice feature. As another reviewer mentioned, when you need to use some of the more advanced functions, if you've lost the booklet, well... good luck. The multi-language booklet briefly explains all of the options, what the LED's mean, and that's pretty much it, verbose it isn't.. It comes in a really nice packaging, like you're really getting something ( and you are), the unit itself seems well made and thought out, you would think a bit more of an effort would have been put into the manual. But, perhaps the product speaks for itself... and it does. And, after all most users will hook it up to their 12 volt car/boat/motorcyle battery, plug it in, select the regular 12v battery option, and that's all most will ever need. Once the battery is charged completely, the charger senses that, and switches automatically to just maintaining the battery. If you loose power while charging (or maintaining), this charger just picks up right where it left off, so there is no worries about pushing buttons or selecting modes, it knows what you were doing before, and starts right back up with doing it again. Several reviewers complained it takes many hours or days to charge a dead battery. It will charge a dead battery but it’s designed intent is to maintain the battery. If you don’t drive your car, motorcycle or lawn tractor often this will keep the battery charged without over charging it.The first time you use it it goes into standby mode and does nothing. You have to select the mode you need. Then it checks the battery and begins charging. If you have a newer computer controlled car there is something always running. After a couple of weeks your battery will be dead. You need something like this.

The owners manual recommends using the 1A unit for batteries up to 30Ah. That means it’s not really intended for car batteries. Even the 2A unit is rated in the manual for 40Ah batteries. I get it that if you have a battery at 50% DoD or more, the charger may take too long and time out. But speaking from experience, on a car that you drive, keep the battery topped up, and just want to long term maintenance/float charge, a 1A or 2A charger should be just fine, even if much larger. The blinking led setup on the 1A unit is highly functional, but I’d prefer the multi-tier indicators, even if very small. Second, the 12V SAE barrel connector is the standard connector. NOCO adapters are expensive and frankly, not that great. Plus then I have another connection point to add resistance and potential moisture ingress. I wish they used standard SAE plugs, and if anything, make a more waterproof or definite coupling for that plug.
Reading some of the negative reviews, obviously those guys don't understand what a trickle charger is. Your battery is not going to be jumped, or charged right away. It takes a day or two or three depending on how low the battery is. Patience grasshoppers!!!In my case, the car battery was totally dead. In fact, graveyards are more lively than my battery was. It took the charger 2 1/2 days to fully charge the battery. I expected it, planned for it, and had no problem with it. It's resurrected from the dead now, just in time for Halloween. It's alive!!!! (insert evil mad scientist laugh).Nice little trickle charger for the money. I would recommend it without hesitation.
Very compact, full featured charger/maintainer which replaced the Noco G750, which I have two. Noco redesigned the Genius 1 to be smaller and, unlike the G750, it doesn't block the other wall plug opening when in use. It's width will cover (2) outlet openings on a power strip though, unless you use one designed with transformer plug spacing. Compared against the popular Battery Tender Jr, the Genius 1 is slightly more powerful at 1amp VS 0.75; adds dedicated charging modes for """"""""regular"""""""" flooded or gell; AGM and Lithium-Ion batteries; automatic desulfation; automatic temperature compensation which changes the charging algorithm; and the ability to charge 6V systems too. Noco redesigned the Genius 1 to be smaller and, unlike the G750, it doesn't block the other wall plug opening when in use. It's width will cover (2) outlet openings on a power strip though, unless you use one designed with transformer plug spacing. Compared against the popular Battery Tender Jr, the Genius 1 is slightly more powerful at 1amp VS 0.75; adds dedicated charging modes for """"""""regular"""""""" flooded or gell; AGM and Lithium-Ion batteries; automatic desulfation; automatic temperature compensation which changes the charging algorithm; and the ability to charge 6V systems too. It's also California certified as an energy efficient charger - CA has newer standards exceeding Energy Star. Battery Tender Jr High Efficiency also meets these CA standards, but at a higher cost than the regular Jr. I'm using this as a maintainer on my Corvette, which is usually connected to a CTEK MUS 4.3. For maintenance charging, the CTEK 4.3 is overkill. I liked that this Noco has a dedicated AGM battery charging mode (charges and maintains at a higher voltage), which I need, and seems to keep up with the natural parasitic draw of the Corvette's computers. I see the Noco switch into maintenance mode 1-2x per day for about 10 minutes, indicated by a slowly blinking green led. BTW, all display indicators are extremely bright - same experience with the Noco G750, you can easily see all indicators in direct sunlight. For around $30, this is a true bargain.
Purchased as a low current battery maintainer for a 12V battery in a car being parked for a few months. The whole product feels high quality. The clips, in particular, feel very high quality and secure well to the posts. Operation is easy. I was happy to see that it remembers the previous setting. That means it will start up in the last used mode after a power outage. My battery was healthy. So I have no experience with any of the more advanced features, but it is nice to know that it may help detect any future problems. I was able to observe it transition from active charging to trickle charging (status light goes from red to green). The device body does get warm during active charging, but is noticeably cooler when trickle charging.
