Nothing sounds like the OB-X8- it's three Oberheims in one. They stuck to the Vintage controls just a little too much but its just such a yummy sound. Love everything about it but please give us midi syncable LFOs through a Firmware update if possible.

This is a board I've been waiting a long time for. It's amazing to have the real sound of the Oberheim legacy at your fingertips. Sending it through a great effects chain, and I'm in synth heaven. The board is physically built like a tank, with a flawless synth action. It has a luxury price, for sure, but it's a beautiful instrument to own.

As far as the analog renaissance that started in lets say mid-2ks with the Evolver - this feels and plays like the ultimate culmination of expertise, and quality craftmanship developed by Sequential over those years. It's truly a beautiful reissue, with nice things like midi and an OLED, but feels immediate like the original. I don't know if this can be beat as far as "analog" goes, same as the Prophet 5/10 reissue. If you ever wanted an Oberheim, i would suggest this over the old beasts with its modern amenities, while still retaining the spark and feel of the old ones.

Fantastic sounding synth. While I don't think it sounds exactly the same as a vintage OB, it sounds amazing in its own right and can stand up to some of the greatest synths ever made. I have a fairly wide selection of modern and vintage reissued synths, and to my ears this is the best sounding of them all. It all starts with the raw tone of the oscillators which sound just right and balanced. Then you have six classic Oberheim filters to choose from and a variety of panning options that really open up the sound. It can sound lush, creamy and gentle, or huge and aggressive. The X8 sounds great even without FX. My only wish is that it had included the X-Mod section from the OB6 which would have really opened up the sound design possibilities. This would not have been true to the originals though, so I understand why it was left off. Overall I'm very happy with the OBX8 and looking forward to what's next for Oberheim. So good to see Tom making gear again.
The sine qua non of synthesis. I had a DREAM, and it was THIS very Oberheim The culmination of a lifetime of wishes and supplication to the Synth genie for an OB-X, an OB-Xa, and an OB-8 in one box; THIS is the Triumvirate of the Synth Gods. All THREE in one package. ALL my synth dreams have been realized!!! Now, the rest of eternity can be spent refining my playing proficiency and adding signal processors to my heart's content. Holy Synth Grail-FOUND: OB-X8. Just effusively EPIC majesty and grandeur...
I was a teenager when the OB's were helping make hit records back in the day, and could never afford one at that point in my life. Tom Oberheim, and his team (along with Sequential/Focusrite), did an outstanding job bringing all four of the greatest original Oberheim synths back in one unit. The sound is dead-on accurate to the originals (OB-X, OB-Xa, OB-SX, and OB-8). The second you start playing this synth, it takes you back to that era, when analogue poly-synths were starting to dominate popular music.
It's Styx, Rush, Prince, The Time, Stevie Nicks, Simple Minds, Foreigner, Queen, Nena, Talk Talk, Weather Report, Lyle Mays, and Van Halen all in one perfect Dream Box!! If you are all about the 70s/80s, THIS is the holy grail. Every patch is eargasms non-stop. A MUST.
I have owned most of the Oberheim synths throughout the past... TVS, OB-X, OB-XA, OB-8, OB-MX, Xpander, OB1, and unfortunately had to sell those off over the years. The earlier the Oberheim product the better the sound, but the less features it had, and it was always hard to choose a favorite. The new OB-X8 really is the best of the OB-X, OB-XA, and OB-8 with some welcome modern additions. The sound is excellent, and if I could only choose one Oberheim synth to own, this would be it!
I sold my vintage OB-8 a couple of months ago, and now after getting the OB-X8, have ZERO regrets. You will get those great Oberheim vintage tones that one would expect, but with all the modern features of a new synth. I am VERY happy with my purchase and cannot wait to see what Oberheim releases next. :)
This is the synth I've wanted for years. It is a fully faithful recreation of the OB-X, OB-Xa and OB-8, plus a number of enhancements like Velocity and Aftertouch. It sounds better than any other analog synth I've ever heard. Shipped fast and safely from Perfect Circuit. No complaints on any front.
