There is a lot of condensation in my can, and I must make sure the scraps NEVER reach the top of the can, nor the bottom of the lid. If that happens, the lid shows little rust spots (and must be scrubbed like described above), and the filters get moldy way too fast. Always wash the can out and let it dry totally before putting a new biodegradable bag or more scraps into the can. And if all else fails, don't buy a stainless steel can, but a ceramic one so you don't have to worry about these responsibilities!

Good product but a new problem

We have used a smaller pail for two years and discarded it when it developed a small hole in the bottom. We now use a larger pail, the only size available now but use plastic liners to hopefully avoid the hole in the bottom. The new problem is that the filter is being held by a small tape on the inside of the lid. The tape does not hold the filter for more than a few weeks. It keeps falling into the bin. It is a a real nuisance and the filter does not do its job. In the old units , there was a metal retainer that held the filter until we remove the retainer and change the filter. The new product is poorly designed and they should go back to a good retainer to hold the filter.

After searching and searching for the right countertop compost bin for my daughter in law, I found this one at Bed, Bath and Beyond on clearance! Plus, the great coupon for 20 % off!! I was delighted, as it had all the features of the highest rated ones that I had found online! Namely, the filter system, and spare filters to keep the fruit flies away. It is well-made, and stylish in stainless steel. It was a Christmas gift, and my daughter in law LOVED it!

Lid weld off center, creating sharp lip
21 January 2020

It works as a bucket, and the lid fits tightly. The problem is that the spot weeks that holds the top of the lid to the bottom part, which holds the carbon filter, are off center, causing the lid to flair out. The lids, being oval as a result, had to be pressed in to the bucket, with the sharp lip protruding to cut the compost bag. A little more care in production would likely have removed this problem, but I guess that is what this price point produces.

Looks Good but Corrodes Easily
14 April 2019

I got a replacement for the original which was a gift. It's stylish and really looks great on my kitchen counter, instead of a bunch of plastic containers. However, the stainless steel is of very, very poor quality, as there developed pin holes at the bottom after a couple months use. Do not use bleach to sterilize the inside. Do not use for strongly acidic compostable wastes. The manufacturer suggests a plastic liner. If I have to buy these, I may as well just go back to plastic containers.

Make Your own compost
20 March 2018

Love my compost bucket. The compost you make helps decrease the size of the landfills, and your plants will love it. You can’t buy better soil. This bucket is attractive, well priced, and efficient. The charcoal filter in the lid keeps you free of gnats and odors as you collect scraps to put in a larger collection outside. I liked the nickel plate look of the stainless steel to match my decor so we can keep it in view and handy. I recommend lining it with a plastic bag to keep the inside from discoloring.

Not Stainless Steel!
2 August 2019

I have owned this composter pail for about 2 weeks. I noticed rust marks and little patches where the shiny finish has been damaged, due either to condensation on the outside of the OGGI compostable bags or perhaps a leak. Suspicious, I grabbed a magnet to see if it would stick to the metal. Yup. This means it is not stainless steel. (Ironically, the magnet does not stick to the lid, so apparently it is stainless steel.) Taking it back to BB&B today. I'm really disappointed, because I am trying to get away from buying plastic. This problem was obvious at least 6 years ago; numerous other buyers have reported rust and holes. Why haven't you addressed this, OGGI?

Put plastic bag inside bucket
29 November 2015

I've had my compost bucket for about 2 years and it's in excellent condition even though we use it all day every day! Make sure you line it with a leftover plastic bag from the grocery store that you brought your fruits and veggies home in. I have read the reviews here that so many of the buckets are getting holes in them, but of course this will happen, if you don't protect the interior. The filter keeps odor in check and I usually replace them as soon as I start smelling the compost which is usually 4-6 months.I want too, to tell you how easy it is to compost! It's cool how fast it all breaks down and becomes rich dirt probably a week or so. I never put meat scraps (would be very stinky), just fruit and veggies and coffee filters and grinds. We now have earthworms that just appear from nowhere! Nature is amazing! Happy Composting!

Stainless Steel composter
14 July 2020

I have purchased 2 stainless steel compost buckets. My first one was well madel and has stood the test of time. So when I needed a second one, I purchased another from Bed Bath and Beyond.Unfortunately this one does not meet the same standard of quality. The stainless steel has dented , Is harder to clean than the previous one I purchased. Despite being stainless steel, it has areas of rust.

good compost holder
26 March 2020

I bought this compost holder about a month ago and me and my boyfriend love it. it is big enough to place lots of leftover compostable food in there, but small enough to fit on our windowsill so it is out of the way. it holds a fair amount of food over the week. We like to rinse it out and clean it on compost day so we can keep the bin fresh, but when there is food in it, the filter is really great because it does not smell a lot. i say it is a winning purchase!
