I am a rookie with this type of lens and did not know quite how to use it. The research I did in advance was the basis of my purchase it and I really enjoyed the results in the pictures. Used it at Yellowstone and love my pictures. It took me awhile to get used to manually zooming in and out and changing the lens based on what I was taking pictures of, but once I got the idea that this is a zoom and not for close ups or wide angle landscapes, I did alright. Even when I was unable to zoom in as close as I wanted, when cropped the pictures are sharp enough that it doesnt matter. They might even be better than more zoom because the shake factor is reduced. The images were clear without a tripod. I expect they will be better yet when I learn how to use the features of ... MoreI am a rookie with this type of lens and did not know quite how to use it. I bought this lens as factory refurbished ex-display. Overall it looks good and was packaged nicely in a plastic bag and bubble wrap tucked inside a factory -like box bearing Olympus logo. Sold by an authorised seller as well. Unfortunately, the lens itself did not look pristine. While reasonably tight and clean outside it had some smear marks on it's front element that looked as if fingerprints were rubbed of in a hurry. Lenspen took good care of that, but on closer examination in bright daylight I discovered a small lint particle stuck to inside of front element and slight fogging ( contamination?) closer to outer edge of one of the inside elements. no way to get there without lens disassembly, and I am not fancy doing it myself. One cannot be too picky when it goes about a used lens though, and from my personal experience any noticeable impact on lens performance is very unlikely to happen with these minor imperfections. And this is exactly what I saw in my field test. I purchased the lens to be used with Olympus PEN Mini E-PM1. The camera recognised the lens and worked with it just fine. Images taken through the lens were good, with natural colours, decent contrast and acceptable overall sharpness that could be improved a lot in some image processing software, for example Adobe Lightroom. Image quality overall is not stellar, but what can be expected with plastic body kit tele-zoom. Definitely better in middle third of focal range ( i.e 80-120mm) than closer to extremes.Focusing can be slow and hesitant at long end of the zoom - but that has to do with the camera as well. All in all, lens lives to the tests and reviews that can be found all over the net. It is also feather light so it won't make the whole set much heavier while widening the camera's capacity a lot. Definite keeper for me.

I got this as a much cheaper alternative to the 7-14mm. It turns out that the image quality is about on par with the standard kit lenses. If that's good enough for your needs, this is a really nice super wide angle lens. I ended up buying the 7-14mm after all because I really wanted the better image quality. There is noticeable barrel distortion at 9mm. It's not horrific and some subject matter even hides it but it is present. As an aside, I also have the underwater housing for the E-PL3. While the focus gear for that housing will fit this 9-18mm lens, the lens itself will not fit inside the housing. I don't know if later model housings were built larger but that is something to carefully research and consider if wide angle underwater photos are on your mind.

With the limited number of options available for M43 I want to make sure I'm clear on this... I'm rating this lens 5 stars on the basis that its a good starter lens for a great price. There's no way this compares to Canon L glass or anything even on the mid low tier. But as a no frills low cost option, it works great. I wouldn't by any means call this one fast sharp, super tough; this is basically a kit lens with a lot of throw. But because its M43 it carries all the advantages of such. It is small, lightweight and it takes good pictures at distance. Your skill can make up much of the difference but you'll find there are fewer opportunities for good shots with these slower lenses. That said, if you're an experienced shooter I doubt these are the lenses you'll be ... MoreWith the limited number of options available for M43 I want to make sure I'm clear on this... That said, if you're an experienced shooter I doubt these are the lenses you'll be gunning for. This goes with my travel rig, and for that purpose its perfect. Also glad it is threaded for 58mm filters as I've got a bunch.
This 40-150mm kit lens does the basics well: good image quality, lite weight and compact. I don't think it is sealed, and it is Does focus as fast as the pro line lens. But, I did not purchase lens for pro feathers. I just wanted a native micro 4/3ths lens with good power for none fast action shooting. With my other lens I have coverage from 28 to 300mm worth of power without having to carry around a lot of Equipment.
This lens has exceeded my expectations. Based on some internet review sites, you might expect this lens to be horribly blurry. But my experience has been the opposite. This is the sharpest m43 lens I own at the focal lengths between 12 and 18mm, when stopped down appropriately. At the widest angles, there is a little more lateral CA and a little more corner softness, but the corners degrade in sharpness in a manner that doesn't call attention to itself, reminding me a lot of the m.Zuiko 14-42mm II kit lens which has the same quality. The lateral CA easily goes away in Lightroom or Adobe Camera Raw if you have the box checked. Even at 9mm, the image quality is superior to some of the other inferior m43 lenses I've used such as the 12-50mm, the 14-42 PZ pancake zoom, ... MoreThis lens has exceeded my expectations. Even at 9mm, the image quality is superior to some of the other inferior m43 lenses I've used such as the 12-50mm, the 14-42 PZ pancake zoom, and the 14mm f/2.5.This lens is also very resistant to purple fringing, a problem that plagues Olympus cameras. I've mostly been using it with a Tiffen Haze 2A filter which eliminates the problem, but even with the filter off, I only noticed minor purple fringing at the 9mm end. This is much superior to the massive purple fringing caused by some Panasonic lenses on Olympus cameras.I wish Olympus included free lens hoods with their lenses; it's a very cheap policy on their part. I do have the lens hood, but because this lens is ultra-wide angle, the hood barely blocks any light from hitting the lens anyway, and when used with a filter the lens hood blocks practically no stray light at all from hitting the filter, so I say you can skip buying the lens hood. I decided to not bother using it.I know that many people considering this lens are also considering the 7-14mm Panasonic lens. You may be tempted by the Panasonic lens because for only a little more money you get 7mm, constant aperture, plus it's said to be sharper. There's certainly a big difference in FOV between 7mm and 9mm, so that's a very legitimate reason for choosing the Panasonic. However, my reason for picking this lens is that it's smaller and half the weight, it zooms in to a very useful 18mm focal length, which means you are more likely to be able to use this as your only lens while a max focal length of 14mm is more limiting. The Panasonic lens is also known to cause strange flares and significant purple fringing, both of which I wanted nothing to do with.
I'm basically happy with the lens although I was initially surprised with the older construction. I don't recall an indication of the age of the lens even though it is clean and the photos are sharp with no obvious wide angle distortion as long as I shoot between f8-16. The lens arrived 4 days earlier than projected so I was happy with that.
Well the lens is tiny the quality of its output is huge. I had this lens for about a year or two and almost never used it. I hate a folding lens. I hate a lens that extends as it zooms. So what happened? Went to New Mexico and Arizona. Hiking some canyons my Panny 12-35 was not wide enough. I experimented with using the panorama function on my GX8 and it works very well with a high sucess rate. There is alway wind and it is moving plants which spoils a landscape using the panorama mode. Started using the Oly at 9 mm and kept it on the camera most of the time. put the 12-35 on my GH3 and carried 2 bodies for a bit but it brought back ugly memories of film and carrying a color body and b&W body. So the tiny Oly worked great in the canyons, in Cathedrals using Panasonic panorama mode it just worked great. Used Apsc wide angles that were prone to flare and ghosting in the past and the little oly had no trouble in the brilliant southwestern sun. I pixel peep but hate to lens change so often would zoom out to 18 and was pleased with the performance. Read about a lot of M4/3 shooter sorry they sold this lens and got a big heavy pro zoom some of which are notorious for flare.
This lens represents a remarkable value. It's sharper than I expected, especially when closed down one or two stops. My copy gets sharper zooming past about 70mm, and seems to stay fairly sharp all the way to 150. I wouldn't expect it to hold up under any kind of rough treatment, or bad weather. It's also very light weight. If you can work with the limitations (in particular the small max aperture) it's well worth having. I have no doubt that the Olympus Pro zoom is better, but I'm not sure yet how invested I want to be in this system, so for me this is a good compromise. The photos shown are taken from the extreme corner of the frame, from left to right they are at 40mm f5, 40mm f7.1, 96mm f4.9, and 96mm f6.3; all were taken with a tripod mounted camera. No post ... No post processing done, other than Lightroom's conversion to DNG and then to JPG. I am no expert at lens testing! These show that my copy has pretty noticeable loss of sharpness in corners even stopped down at 40mm, but things get better at longer focal lengths. I plan to keep this in mind when using this lens.
Buy this lens for its light weight, small size, and useful range. It is pretty good all the way to about 135mm. Racked out fully, I found it hard to focus sharply on small details that I was reaching for. I have used this lens with both the EM1-iii and Pen F with the same result. However, there is no other better option I have found for a small, light kit with this kind of range. Some compromise has to be expected. For casual snapshots and people pictures it is a lens you will likely use a lot, and you are likely to use it simply because you are willing to carry it. The useful hood can be stored on the lens in reverse to save space in the bag or pocket.
