I first tried out a Panasonic/Leica 100-400 hoping it would work out due to its diminutive size. Unfortunately, it was not consistent performer. I ordered a Olympus 100-400 to take it's place hoping for the best. That is what I got. The zoom ring is incredibly smooth (something Panasonic has not managed with their Leica-branded 100-400) and I like the Oly's ability to accept the 1.4x converter.But, the Oly is fatter, longer, heavier and slower, making it very difficult to hand-hold, even on the new OM-Systems OM-1. My keeper rate is much lower than before. Though some reviewers say the Olympus is sharper than the Pana/Leica, I can't see it. The zooming mechanism is coarse compared to the PRO. series zoom lenses. It's not bad, it's just not great. No IS synchrony between the lens and the body. I have tried both with just cameras IS and then with just the len's IS and the both types of IS at the same time. I use the camera's IBIS. most of the time. A fair amount of color chromatic aberration.Conclusion: So far I like the lens. I hope it holds up to a great deal of use and not get sloppy on me. I hope the internal mechanics stay good and reliable. So fat I am pleased with the lens.

It delivers premium quality pictures - no doubt about that.At 100mm end, the autofocus is pretty fast, at 400mm the autofocus takes a bit time (with EM5 miii) - a little below my expectation.But the biggest gripe is, it weighs 1120 g (2.46 lb). The full-frame 100-400mm lens from Sigma (for Sony cameras) weighs 1135 g - so virtually weighs the same! This is unacceptable, because the main reason people choose MFT over FF is lighter weight.
I was concerned I would be unhappy with this non-pro lens, but quite the contrary. The 150-400 pro lens is 5x the price and back-ordered so it really is the best available at this focal length. Turns out it is a very solidly built lens and easy enough to hand hold thanks to Olympus (OM Digital) superior image stabilization. When used with the 1.4 or 2.0 tele-converter the reach is amazing. The variable aperture is a bit of a compromise (hence 4 stars) and I suspect I may encounter some limits in low light, but in this early stage of ownership I have not yet pushed those limits. I'm primarily a landscape photographer so this venture into birds & wildlife comes with some learning opportunities for me in the area of continuous auto-focus, tracking and motion capture. ... I bought this with an OM-1 after using the combination of camera and lens for two weeks in Costa Rica (see my OM1 review for more detail). It's hard to review the lens in isolation, but a couple of observations are in order:1. Lens design is constrained by physics, primarily fundamental optics. Performance, light weight, quality - choose two. This lens is not equal to its big brother, the $7500 150-400 pro lens, but then again, it is 1/5 the price. It's also hard to beliee that it is not a better lens than, for example, a light-weight Canon 100-400 that costs half as much.2. IMage quality has been outstanding. If I was being really picky I might want the focus to be a little quicker and the zoom to be a tiny bit smoother and less stiff, but it's better than other lenses I have handled. On my Olympus OM-1, this lens gives a full frame focal length equivalent of 200-800mm. Using the Olympus MC-20 teleconverter, it becomes a 400-1600mm lens. At 1600mm max aperture becomes f/11, so realistically this is a daylight lens; handheld or with moving subjects (wildlife) you're into pretty high ISO like 3200 or 6400 with fast shutter speeds. So, particularly with the teleconverter, expect some sensor noise. This is not a pro lens but it's plenty sharp enough and has the typical Olympus high build quality and splashproof design. For focal lengths up to 600mm equivalent, my best setup is the Olympus 40-150mm f/2.8 PRO lens with the MC-20 teleconverter.
One reviewer (or perhaps one then just one), lamented the weight of this lens. This puzzled me. Because this is a very small lens in comparison with its bigger brother the 150-400mm + built-in 1.25TC.That lens IS heavy at 1,875grams, whereas the 100-400mm f/5.6 that we are considering here weighs 985 grams. Or, to put this into units Americans can better visualize, 1875 g = 4.13 lb; whereas 983 g. = 2.172 lb.How lightweight do you need your 100-400mm zoom to be? That's all. Just a short counter to those (I think) mis-leading reviews.
Let me start by saying I am giving it a 4-star because I have only had it for a few days and will update later. Right out of the box I was amazed that it was slightly more compact than my OLY 300mm Pro. Its weight and feel were excellent, great craftmanship. I paired it with an Olympus E-M1 mark III. Day one I took some images of birds at my feeders. Blue Jay and Songbirds. Day two I took images of ducks and an eagle. It was a cloudy day but the sun was trying to break through. The zoom was smooth, and it was easy to hold without a tripod although I rested it on the car window. I had no trouble with focusing as with my camera it focused fast. I had the limiter on the lens set to 6m to infinity. With the Eagle picture I used spot focus and had to shot between the ... The Olympus M. Zuiko 100-400mm zoom is a bit larger than some zooms of comparable focal range, but Olympus/OMDS had to partner with Sigma to get this lens available for the Micro Four-Thirds platform. Weight is probably mid-pack and it is very manageable with proper camera and lens holding technique. The zoom ring is a bit stiff but not unbearably so. The mount has a slight amount of play when the lens in mounted on a camera, and can be disconcerting although there is no danger of the lens falling off.Performance: Sharpness is good, but not exceptional: Images have very decent detail. Auto-focus is quick and generally accurate on an Olympus EM-1 Mark III. The lens is a workhorse, not a halo product, and it performs as such, which was what I had expected.
