Despite all the features and name brand, Philips voice recorder sound, ease of use and straightforwardness is a thousand times better for all ages (we returned it before trying an external mic).If you want the learning curve, it works.The speaker, marketing and variety of settings is better than the sound. Too frustrating unless you want a budget note taker which only you will hear.

I I have owned Olympus products in the past with great results. Unfortunately, this did not happen this time. I found the instructions lacking and what instructions there were difficult to follow. I could not for the life of me figure out how to turn this recorder off. I tried multiple times with no luck.

I had to re read the instructions a few times but once I did it was pretty simple to understand. I needed a affordable recorder to record my obnoxious repulsive neighbors beneath me and shockingly this does the job. I was surprised at how clear it sounded and picked up the noise beneath me. What I don’t like is you have to keep purchasing batteries to keep it on and it’s a little hard to understand how to use at first.. but other than that it’s decent.

Note that this recorder does not have options for "Quality" and "Microphone Sensitivity". Instead, they offer something called "Recording Scenes" that essentially select quality and sensitivity for you. As a test, I recorded a simple "Testing 1 2 3" in each of the 4 "Recording Scenes", then imported the recordings into Audacity. In the first screenshot, we see that the "Music" recording scene uses low sensitivity and the other modes use high sensitivity. The second screenshot shows a very short time interval; so short that individual sample points are easily seen. My recommendation: Use "Music" mode for low microphone sensitivity, and "Talk" mode for high sensitivity. The 4 GB capacity enables over 200 hours of recording time at the highest quality. Other reviewers have commented that setup can be difficult and the screen is difficult to read. Well, setup was not too complicated at all, and once it is setup, you really don't need the screen for much. One dedicated button to record, one for playback, two for next / previous, two for volume up / down.It is a simple User Interface.
The Memo and Talk functions work well. The Music and LP not so much. It can't pause, which is unforgivable. Despite that, for under $40, it is good for dictation and for small, closely-held meetings. Playback of Memo and Talk recordings are loud and clear. Playback of Music and LP recordings and low and muffled. As long as your expectations don't exceed those parameters, it is a good recorder, and is certainly affordable. I just wish it could pause and resume during the same dictation/meeting session. Then I could give it another star.
I purchased this recorder because I needed to record conversations for note taking purposes. The only reason I gave it a 4 stars instead of 5 was because it took a bit of time to get the hang of naming & deleting files - but other than that it was really easy to use. After getting the recorder I was needing a way to record conversations with my physician for reference. I purchased the Olympus TP8 Telephone Pick-Up Item # 519274 and I was able to do this easily. It looks like a single earbud. It plugs in to the microphone jack. When on the phone just place the phone on the ear with the single earbud and it will then record both sides of the conversation. This is a great device because it does JUST WHAT I NEED not 1000 other things that I don’t!

You can fast forward by one button push and the longer you push the faster the rate(jump one hour play in 20 seconds). The recorded programs are stored in files that appear on the screen and the total time of file is displayed in hours,minutes and seconds. While recording is occurring the actual record time is displayed. When you stop record all you have to do to listen to last recording is press play. There are three modes of record and I started by using LP which allowed 1000 plus hours(wow!). I am now using the "Music" mode and there are 267 hours of total record time with more natural voice quality. I bought this recorder for the sole purpose of using it for my research with start-up companies. I wanted to focus on the person I was interviewing is why I bought a recorder. I have a mac book and the description says that it is compatible. However, it is NOT. It will open with any app or program you use on your mac.
The WS500M recorder was the bomb. I still have it after probably 10 years, it's amazing. It will record to MP3 or WAV, but this VN541 only does WMA recording. Big bummer. Duh...1/2 the world is Mac. I had to convert the WMA to MP3 thru VLC to get it in a form where I could share it. But, whaddaya want for twenty bucks. It has some typical ridiculous functionality. The result of someone in china creating the user interface and manual. Like, when see your file's length in time, the word under that time says REMAIN. That would suggest the available time remaining on the unit, and *not* the spec for the file length. Also, there is no pause/record mode. You have to stop the recording and create a new file. Unlike my other model, which as a small metallic button, this thing feels very flimsy. As the main switch, that will be used thousands of times, it should have been much more durable. And finally, unlike my other model, this does not have 2 mics (that I can see, or hear). I use my other unit to record ideas on piano and guitar, and the binaural sound is fantastic. This model is strictly for voice. But, as I said, it was only twenty bucks. And instead of letting my wife borrow my good one for her readings, it's worth it, albeit the odd characteristics and shortcomings. If you want something with great quality, you'll have to get a zoom or upper end sony or tascam.
Great little device for recording. Very easy to use. Lightweight, only one battery. It's very user friendly, ergonomically shaped so it sits well when handling it (it has a cut out groove at the rear where your finger fits snugly), so you're less likely to drop it when using it. Great voice recorder for the price. I would highly recommend.
