I bought this lens for use on my Panasonic GF-1 to cover wider angles below the 14mm (28mm Full Frame equivalent)available on the kit lens. Its main intended use was as a very portable travel Wideangle. It has rapidly become my favourite micro 4/3 lens and now spends more time on the camera than either the 14-45 or 14-140. The 18-36mm FF equivalent covers my most used range, output (sharpness, colours, contrast) is great, and for daylight hand held photography it's hard to beat. At those focal lengths I don't miss the lack of built in image stabilisation (only an issue on the Panasonic micro 4/3 cameras, of course, as the Oly bodies have it built in.) It autofocuses quite quickly on my GF-1 (with the latest firmware update). However, I've achieved quite good results mating the GF-1/18-36 with a small table-top tripod to get slower shutter speeds. If this lens had been faster, eg aperture of 2.8, I would have given it 5 stars. But that's the tradeoff made for small size, low weight and great portability. I am really happy with this lens!

To me, it belongs to the compact holy binity (the other one being the Pany 35-100 f/4-5.6). They cover an incredible range (the missing 19-34mm range you cover by walking a little bit or getting a zoom pancake) and weight less than 150g each. Can you have it in any other system?I hope Olympus and Panasonic dont forget the main strength of this system.Negatives: The silver accent at the bottom; The cosmetic (and optional) hood. Hint: the alternative LH-55C for the 12-50mm is more useful and doesnt vignette; The price.

I received yesterday the lens and I could not wait to try it on my Olympus Pen F camera. I was literally amazed by the small size, low weight and image quality when compared with my Nikon D7000 and my Sony A7R full frame lenses. Image quality, light weight and focal range are outstanding and ideal for any street photography outing. After the initial test, I will likely make this lens one of my standard lenses.

If I didn't already love the compactness of my Olympus Pen enough, this lens absolutely tops it. Amazing quality, and extremely wide angle. Brilliant for everything from indoor photography of small rooms to stunning landscapes and action shots.
I love this super-wide lens. It's much more usable than the Panasonic 7-14mm: no huge, bulbous front element, and much smaller and more portable, with a more useful zoom range. Even though it's 9mm narrower, it's still plenty wide and distorts like an ultrawide should. Optically, this lens is also quite decent. I hear it's not quite as sharp as the Panasonic but still more than good enough. (You won't notice anyway.) The zoom ring is also nicely damped and the focus turns quickly. The aperture isn't constant like the Panasonic though. Do note that this lens uses a collapsible design, so in usage the lens is about 1.5x longer than it is in its collapsed position. Obviously for those wanting the best and widest lens, the Panasonic is probably a better choice, but it's ... MoreI love this super-wide lens. Obviously for those wanting the best and widest lens, the Panasonic is probably a better choice, but it's nearly twice as expensive. If you just want to shoot wide, the Olympus is definitely the way to go. I'm reluctant to give it five stars, though, because although the optics are very good for the price, they're not quite world-class.
The build and lock mechanism are a little idiosyncratic, but this lightweight, compact, well-engineered zoom is an invaluable tool.Distortion is acceptable for a lens this wide, the resolution is impressive, and the Olympus 5-axis stabilization compensates for the the slowness of the aperture
Suddenly my Olympus 9-18 mm stopped working in my Lumix GX8 camera, sent all to Panasonic, no solution. Attempting to upgrade Olympus lens firmware on the 9-18 bmm lens to no avail, going in circles on that process. I'd avoid mixing lens with other camera brands, just about wrecked my vacation in Armenia, not worth the risk, luckily the combo died towards the end of the trip and I had 2 backups.
I’ve used this and the Pro version 7-14mm and while I believe it’s not useful to compare various lenses all the time I will say that this is a stellar lens that you take with you as opposed to leave at the house. My Pro zooms are awesome, but I find myself grabbing my primes and this wide angle zoom more times than not. I shoot landscape, street , interiors for pay and unless you have pixel snooty clients who are staring at the edges for critical sharpness you’ll be just fine with this wide zoom.
Reading the online reviews and resolutions tests, you'd expect to see liquid images in the corner, but it's actually not too bad. I'd call it near-even performance, in that you don't look at the corners and think you should just crop them off. It's just difficult to compose something where the center and the corner are both in focus, so test with just the corner in focus, and you'll see. I find it to be a more-than-adequate substitute for super-wide primes. The slow speed didn't bother me; I've been using the 9mm end most of the time, and f/4 is bright enough to shoot 1/20 second or faster in most lighting even at ISO 200-400. Barrel distortion is visible in raw files, but I usually do not mind it, since it adds a bit of drama to the image. 52mm filter by itself ... MoreReading the online reviews and resolutions tests, you'd expect to see liquid images in the corner, but it's actually not too bad. I haven't felt the need for a shade. I've tried using a 52-55 step up ring, but the 55 mm filter vignettes a bit. I'd get a 62mm or larger if you are using a step-up ring. I've definitely gotten over my fear of (prejudice toward?) zooms. :-)
I've only had a chance to do a short test run with the lens, but it seems to focus quickly and accruately. That and good sharpness are what i primarily am interested in. It isn't the smallest lens I own, but it it certainly light! The build quiality seem good, but I would still hate to drop it as it is plastic. Considering the price, I'd say it's a great choice for four thirds photographers that are looking for a good, versitile wide angle lens to use outdoors.
