When taking images, the focus is swift and accurate, and coupled with the image stabilization, makes the photo as sharp as it can be. The object focus (faces, dogs, cats, birds, planes, cars, trains) enables easy accurate focusing on still or moving targets. The image stabilization is truly amazing. The viewfinder is sharp and bright, as is the LCD screen. The articulating screen is very useful to me, as bending and crouching is limited by arthritis. The in-camera HDR, focus stacking and pano are wonderful, and I often take advantage of them. With the recent release of the Sony A9 Mk3, I became interested in exploring fast action and wildlife photography. However, the cost of the Sony A9 Mk3 camera and a superzoom lens exceeding 200mm was prohibitively expensive for an amateur photographer.Then I was led to try the OM-1 Mk2, drawn by its 2x crop factor for superzoom capabilities, 120fps for capturing fast action, and modern AI detection technologies. Personally, it has met my expectations to such an extent that I am considering selling my Sony zoom lenses and investing in OM System's pro zoom lenses instead. The big EM-1X remains useful for having two batteries, buttons for portrait-format photos, and its build quality. I don't think the OM-1 was necessary for recent photos of small emerging butterflies (with flash), but I used it anyway.,I haven't yet had a chance to do action shots with the OM-1 (missed a day of decent surf and surfers), but the speed of the new processor has been evident from HDR photos of the moon. New images get processed fast, a huge convenience. I expect that to carry over into other functions. I can only assume that these background elements (ie tree limbs, reeds) qualify as bird within the bird AI algorithm.Feature-wise, my easy favorite is ProCapture. It is implemented so well on this body and has loads of adjustability. I am routinely able to get shots that were lucky timing type shots on my R6, trying to lay on the shutter button precisely in-time with a landing or departure event.Other favorites: having four custom modes is great, and loads of custom button, dial, multi-switch configurability.Tip: turn off the manual focus clutch function in the camera menu. This is a feature of the Pro line of lenses. It seems great at first when learning the camera and lens, but in real-world use, its easy action is subtle enough to occasionally fail to notice the inadvertent switch to manual focus. Then while thinking about composition, framing, exposure etc, I would fire off several out-of-focus shots before realizing that I had switched the clutch to manual. Operator error, sure, but removing this from the experience frees up mental capacity for things that matter. Besides, it can be set up for full-time manual override, so just grab the ring and turn at any time.The 12-40 lens works well and is nice enough to operate, but I have yet to be wowed by its output. Partially my bad - it isn't fast enough nor an interesting range for the non-bird things that I like shoot (dogs, people). Of course to someone wanting this range - great! In hindsight I wish I would have passed on this lens and instead gained a fast prime lens within that focal range. It is a fairly light and tight assembly, but tough it is not. A fairly light fall broke one of the rear mounting plate screw hole projections and is now needing a repair.

After I did that, the trade-in sale I was hoping for happened, so I got the Mark II and ... yeah, everything is just a Liiiiitle better. I have been shooting both the OM1.1 and OM1.2 back to back for the last three weeks. For those already using the Mk1 and considering the Mk2 I will mention some key differences.1. Rack ZoomThe ability to rack zoom in SH modes is very nice. There is an awkward pause on the OM1.1 when you twist the zoom ring where image capture was suspended and it requires the camera to re-initiate focus after the zoom motion stops. The OM1.2 allows you to keep right on shooting as you reframe with the zoom ring. Hit rate drops as the AoV is changing but it's still pretty good.2. Larger buffer.I sometimes hit the buffer limit on the OM1.1 which drops my burst rate to 12fps. The OM1.1 will sometimes disappear for a split second then re-appear. The subject box on the OM1.2 is more present which is more reassuring. Does that mean it is giving more in-focus frames? I cannot answer that objectively yet. I will say it feels like it drifts less with the eye in focus as a bird shifts around.5. Quicker Recovery when it misses.Sometimes on the OM1.1 during a burst, the camera might lose focus for 2-3 frames before snapping back in focus. The OM1.2 is back in focus on the very next frame. Really quick to recover - more responsive.6. More precisionThe OM1.2 has less tendency to grab on to distracting elements near the animal/birds eye (branches, blades of grass). It cut my missed shots due to branch focus in half. e.g. if I shoot a 10 shot burst with the OM1.1 of the bird below I might have 2-3 in the sequence where it grabs the twig next to the eye. With the OM1.2 it might sometimes grab the twig for a frame but it is very quick to correct.7. Pro-Capture is smootherWith each iteration of pre-cap, the EM1's and now OM1's are more refined. It does not feel like the slide show experience the OM1.1 does at times. Like the camera is having an easier time processing all that data. Sometimes I have to glance to the right side of the screen to re-assure myself I am in ProCap SH2 and not plain SH2!8. Subject LOCKA fantastic new feature that you can assign to a button that tells the camera to remain locked on whichever subject you identify, even as other subjects enter and leave the frame. Works great for people too. Focus stays on the bride and does not jump to the groom even though his face might be larger in the frame.9. Touch screen improvementsThe touch menu's are a nice addition to quickly jump to the desired tab. You can now tap and/or swipe the high level menu's to jump between them.10. GND!You have probably heard about this feature already but it is really impressive implementation. It is very intuitive and easy to set up quickly in the field. I use it for interior real estate shots to tone down overly bright parts of rooms from windows/sliding doors. Can also be combined with polarizing or physical ND filters for cityscapes and landscapes.
I've purchased Olympus gear for 9 years, and just took this OM-1 Mark II camera to the furthest point north that is drivable in Canada. I use this with a 12-100 Olympus zoom, a 60 mm macro Olympus, and a 150-400 OM Systems lens.I did not even have time to set up the camera completely before leaving, it's a VERY long drive from New Mexico to Inuvik, Northwest Territories , Canada, and I camped most of the time, being exhausted each day. I am a long term user of Olympus gear, starting with the EM-10. Most recently I purchased the original OM-1 on two different occasions. I returned the first because of what I thought at the time, was a faulty front dial. Seemed to rotate clockwise OK, but would hang when turning counter-clockwise. I purchased the second OM-1 for a ridiculous price last Thanksgiving (Black Friday). The front dial moved easier than the one on the 1st body, but was still difficult to turn counter-clockwise. So I sold it. But I'm primarily a bird photographer, so when the Mark II initial reviews can out toting a much stickier Bird AF mode, I decided to try again. The Mark II retains focus (on the bird) even when the bird momentarily moves behind a branch or leaf. Currently very happy with the upgrades over my EM-1 MIII and eagerly awaiting spring migration. I probably would not upgrade from a Mark I, but if you're coming from a E-M1 Mark I, II, or III, then well worth it. Still disappointed in OM Digital for the lack of a battery charger.
