I reviewed Men’s On Cloudrock 2 Waterproof hiking boots as an REI Product Advisor. I am a trial runner/hiker, I work at a vineyard, and I live near the coast in Northern California. I need footwear that can stick with me from work through beach with the trail in between. Easy to take on and off, they pair well with wool socks. The sidewalls at your ankles are a less sturdy material, still offering a bit of sturdyness but not hard to cause discomfort. It was a good balance of support and comfort. However the normal morning dew was such that during a normal walk, ordinary shoes would be damp where as these stayed warm and dry. While it's waterproof now, above the toes is a more fabric free-breathing portion of the shoe. While offering comfort and a decent flex point it will probably need to be waterproofed in the future with normal wear and tear.Improvements: Not much really. The side of the boot has these little square cutouts that aren't hollow. If you step in mud and the mud gets in these squares they'll be quite a pain to empty out once it dries. The rear empty square is about an inch and a quarter deep. The only other one being pricepoint, they are a pricier shoe. Regardless, these are minor things and the shoe is holding its own again some of the best in my inventory.I definitely recommend these. I have worn these black boots almost everday since I received them. I have been wearing them to work, as well as on a weekend hike. The thing I notice most about them is how comfortable they are. I own multiple pairs of hiking boots including Keens and Lowas and when I wear those I always notice that I am wearing hiking boots. With the Cloudrock 2s I forget that I'm wearing boots. Good room in the toes. Good traction. With the original insole, the collar around the ankles puts too much pressure on my ankle bones and they frankly hurt. The boots were laced very loosely to manage the discomfort. With an aftermarket insole with more arch support, the boot collars were more comfortable and I experienced much less discomfort on my ankle bones. Laces are good and don’t come untied. The toe rand is effective at protecting the boot fabric from abrasion. After 3 hikes totaling about 13 miles there was no obvious wear. Versatile outdoor footwear! These boots are good for cold weather, wet weather, long treks, or short hikes. They are lightweight, like sneakers, and they keep your feet warm and dry in cold, wet weather. I live in the Pacific Northwest and these are great hiking shoes for the wet, variable weather we expect out here. They provide good support.I give these boots got 4 not 5 stars because the shoelace notches for lacing and tightening the upper portion of the boot are too small for the laces. At the end of hiking, I enjoy laces that fall smoothly off out of the upper notches on the boot. I needed to pull the laces out of these. Otherwise, no complaints.
After weeks of putting together gear for an upcoming hiking expedition throughout South and Central America, I went all in on these boots from ON. Maybe they're more for taking "hikes" through a suburban dog park trail or your neighborhood patch of forest because they didn't even hold up for 3 weeks of serious hiking. They started delaminating around the toes after just 2 weeks leaving me with wet feet in the back country of Chilean Patagonia. Super disappointed! Now I have to bite the bullet and buy new boots or face putting up with wet toes for the rest of my trekking in South America. The comfort was excellent and they were very light. Just terrible durability.

This boot has a rugged insole and outsole with deep lugs that offer excellent traction. These boots worked well on steep hiking ascents and felt light and agile walking at various speeds. The locking upper eyelets and tongue kept my lacing secure and my heels locked in place on steep descents. This boot worked well for me in hot desert conditions with excellent grip on Class 2 sandstone scrambles (my feet were warm but not over-heated) and equally well in the unforgiving Alpine environment of Colorado's San Juan Mountains. I decided to wear them around the house for a few hours in preparation for hitting the trails later in the day, and I have to say, they are not very comfortable for casual wear. But once I got out on the trails and the mud, they really shined. The traction was probably the best of any hiking or trail running shoe I've ever worn, and the support was phenomenal. I almost felt bad that I was not on more challenging terrain - mud, rocks, snow. I think that these shoes are made for the serious hikers on serious trails. I can't wait to try them out this winter; I think they will really shine. My only problem with these is that they do seem narrow. I took my new ON Cloudrock hiking boots for a spin at our local National Monument and found the boots to be very sturdy on uneven terrain. I felt confident that I would not sprain any ankles as most of my steps landed in an overpronation position when I stepped on the edges of the deeply worn trails. They were also very light even after trudging more than a mile on grassy and muddy trails. I would, however, encourage the use of hiking crew socks and not anklets like I was wearing. The sturdy collars rubbed against my bare lower shins and I ended up with small abrasion, which did sting at the last 1/2 mile of my hike. I still really liked these boots and would still highly recommend them to avid hikers.
