I've been using a Logitech Harmony for years now and it's finally becoming unresponsive so I looked for a replacement at BB. Logitech's prices have gotten ridiculous wanting too much (and I only ever really used about 10% of the features anyway . . . so I picked another known brand. Changing channels and volume is about all I need. There is a challenge for ANY remote going through all those codes to find the right one for your device. But when you find it, it works well. Technophobes might not have the same opinion, though . . .

I had high hopes for this remote. I was happy to not have 3 remotes anymore when watching tv and always replacing one because it got lost. I received it fast and i was so happy to set it up. The setup itself was really easy andthe codes are all there. What i didnt like is when i set up television and then the soundbar the tv wouldnt turn off and then the volume wouldnt work. I got the roku set up but then i couldnt get to the home screen to get to my streaming channels no matter what i tried. It could be operator error, but I know i put in all the codes correctly and nothing. When i tried turning the tv off and on it wouldnt work soci tried it with the remote that goes with the tv and it turned right off which is strange because i had already programmed it. This ... The parent company for One For All, Universal Electronics, is basically an OEM for on- and off-branded remotes, things like remotes for hotel TVs, cable boxes, etc. These are not bespoke, highly designed products. They are made to be inexpensive, and they are going to be produced according to fixed design and manufacturing plans. The URC7880 is evidently OFA's attempt to try to take their canned designs to their limit by forcing them to do things they weren't ever really meant to - that is, they tried to "shoehorn" features into this product that were never meant to be there. When properly programmed, the device works pretty well. I can fully control an audio and TV setup with two macros and two activities. One macro switches on three devices, sets a TV input, and mutes the screen. Another turns on two devices and sets an input.Bad: nearly all the bad of this remote comes from the "shoehorn" design I described. The microcontroller and memory architecture of this device just weren't meant to do what's being asked of them. That's why there's practically no room for error in programming it.I experienced many of the problems reported by others: buttons that wouldn't learn, or that would seem to erase randomly, or that would, in fact, capture the signal from the source remote but the resulting pulse was all wrong and wouldn't work (I could see that the remote was emitting on the receiver of my IR extender, and the pulse train was visibly wonky). The most infuriating thing was when I finally seemed to be making progress, and suddenly the remote stopped learning after only 15 buttons, acting as though its memory was full.Here's what I think is happening: the remote doesn't fully erase programmed or learned memory. As you attempt to program it, and mistakes are made, erase procedures for keys and macros do not seem to actually remove all traces of previous learned buttons. This results in a steady buildup of data that fills memory, until learning becomes impossible. A couple of times after erasing a button I'd tried several times to program, I actually saw the data build up from each previous attempt to learn get erased in reverse order of how they were entered, and after a couple of erases I got back to the original code I wanted! So the erase function only removes a certain amount of data each time, and anything left sits in unaddressable memory. This is all made worse because there's actually very little programmable memory available in this remote.There also appear to be errors in the microcontroller code. When going into program mode to customize a device, the device has to be selected, naturally. But if you go into program mode with the device already selected, it's even money that your learning for buttons in that device won't be recorded. If you scroll to another device, or scroll back to the one you're starting from, it tends to work much more reliably.Another error is that the keys require relatively long presses to send enough of a pulse to activate whatever function you're trying to control. On the factory remotes, or using a Logitech Harmony, a single button tap gets a response, and taps can be entered very quickly to move fast through menus. Not so the URC7880. It requires presses twice as long, and repeated keying doesn't go fast. This is probably because it doesn't latch the button as soon as pressed (it's that cheap microcontrol hardware/programming again).The final "bad" stuff is really about some design choices. OFA needs to ditch the direct app buttons for Amazon, Netflix, etc. Honestly, who cares when there are so many different streaming services now? Another bad thing is the lack of backlighting. That speaks for itself. Also, the button shapes are ridiculously similar, especially seeing as how the overall form forces closely and uniformly spaced buttons. Without sufficient shape differences, the buttons become almost impossible to determine by feel alone. I find myself having to look at the remote constantly in order to use it. A final gripe I have is the need to activate Macros attached to Activities by using a 3 second delay, and by requiring a 2 second press of the off key in order to shut down all devices. This could all be eliminated with one dedicated Macro launch key for the selected Activity and one dedicated System Off key.With all this said, can this remote be made to work reasonably well? Yes, provided your use case needs only the preprogrammed button sets already in the remote, or if you're careful when setting it up with custom buttons to make as few mistakes and revisions as possible so you don't accumulate old data.Here are my suggestions.1) Factory reset the remote. Instructions are available at OFAs support website.2) Plan out and perform any custom button learning you want to do *before* adding codes or doing a code search to load in the premade control sets for your devices. If any of the learned buttons were for devices that you then added in as a premade set, you may have to reteach those buttons.3) If you're going to create Macros, I strongly suggest if your device has separate on/off keys that you take advantage of them. If it does, then learn only the Power Off key onto the large power key on the remote, and pick some other separate key to teach as Power On. Keep track of these. I used the red Record key as Power On for all my devices. This makes it possible to switch between Macros that use common devices without having to shut everything off first.4) Get used to the timing for button presses while programming. You may well have to do a factory reset several times while you get the hang of it (I did). I also removed the batteries between resets. It's actually not that bad to get used to the timing. Most of my problem is I have big hands.5) Test every device after you finish setting it up.6) Keep in mind the total number of Macro steps is 15, and maybe less if you run out of memory after doing button learns. That's not 15 per Macro, that's 15 for ALL Macros.Final thoughts on this remote: now that Logitech is out of the market, this is one of the only things going for a programmable, macro-capable remote that has lots of buttons. For those who say this is as good as or is a true replacement for a Harmony - no, it most certainly isn't. If this completely replaces a Harmony for you, then you never needed a Harmony in the first place. It also doesn't compare to the Harmony's ergonomics, which are superior in every way.

This is a really cool feature and will probably be used eventually for me.For $40 bucks, it's not a bad deal to buy brand spanking new from Best Buy, but I did find on Ebay that you can buy this remote refurbished for $25. I wanted a brand spanking new remote because I did not want the remote already programmed with someone else's TV and components.
This remote is beautifully designed and feels good in my hand. The remote did not program easily as it took numerous attempts to function. There is no illumination so forgot seeing it if you're watching a movie with the lights out. Customer service by phone (rare these days) is good and comes from the Netherlands. So their English is better than Americans, lol! The downside is you have to call in the morning or early afternoon if you're in the States due to the time different. This is still better than talking to a guy in India and hearing goats in the background. I still need to call CS as I can't seem to get the Activities to work and I'm no beginner to electronics. Unfortunately they no longer make these wonderful devices and one of mine with a built in rechargeable battery is losing all battery life. I chose this device to replace it because of its ability to program for numerous devices and to program activities as well as devices. It does work pretty much as promised and is relatively easy to program for individual devices and up to five activities (ie watch Tv or watch bluray). It works very well for those functions. All functions are there and just needs a little exploring. Wish the instruction talks about the "hidden" but useful function already there. But no biggie.Design and craftsmanship a fair bit better than expected from such a generic device. Surely beats the Bell remote.Highly recommended if you happen to be in the market for something like this.So far not much to dislike about. Fingers crossed.
I bought this to help my mother use her Roku. I had tried writing down the instructions which did not work. I then tried taking photographs of exactly what to do along with instructions, which also did not work. I even created a video for her to watch on her cell phone but even that was not enough.My last bet was finding a 'smart' remote to do the work for her. When I learned Logitech no longer made their remote controls I turned to this. For the price, I wasn't expecting much, but I was very pleasantly surprised.I connected the remote to the 3 devices necessary, in this case the TV, stereo & Roku, and programmed in a command to power on the stereo, change the TV input to the correct channel and power up and control the Roku.
