I have my RZ50 in my game/theater room now. I’m happy with this receiver. The new Denon x3800h has Dirac Live but you have to wait for a software update sometime next year. On top of that, it’s not even free! Like c’mon seriously?! You still have to pay even more for what the Denon x3800h costs where as this beautiful RZ50 has it built right in for free straight out of the box ready to rock and roll. Do yourself a favor, stop waiting, stop contemplating and pick yourself up the Onkyo TX-RZ50!!!

Beware of $70 shipping to authorized repair center

This should be a 5 star review, unfortunately for the past 4 months I've had progressively more HDMI dropouts. This is aggravating when playing FPS games on the PS5. After testing with an OnkyoTX-NR6050 I know that 4K/120 does work just not on my unit. A 3 year warranty is great but, having to pay $70 to ship it to the authorized repair center and be without it for an unknown amount of time is not. It's incredible when it works but I worry about longevity, something I shouldn't have to do at this price point. I've owned Onkyo high end gear for the last 25 years and most were fine, a few had to go in for repairs.

Finally an AVR with more than one 2.1 Hdmi input

Finally, an AVR that has more than one 2.1 hdmi input’s. This particular AVR has three hdmi inputs that support 4K @ 120fps. I have two PS5 and two Xbox Series X. Since there is technically only two sources on the market that support 2.1. If you have both consoles and a TV that also supports 2.1 hdmi. This AVR is for you. I absolutely love this AVR. The dirac live is awesome. Way better than Denon’s room EQ. I have not had any complaints or issues with this receiver.

Good receiver with some niggly flaws.
12 February 2023

I purchased the RZ50 after hearing so many good reviews online and coming from using an RZ830 I was really positive to hear the RZ50 was now orderable in the UK after what had happened to Onkyo. I really wanted another Onkyo as I've always loved the sound Onkyo AVRs produce. Once received and setting it up, the RZ50 sounded fantastic. It comes with Dirac Live built in which is a bonus and I have to say Dirac is the real deal. You can also customise the house curve and once I added the Harman curve it really sounds good and there is a strong sound presence. However, it doesn't quite feel polished compared to my old RZ830. It's practically the same AVR but just with Dirac and HDMI 2.1 ports. It's practically the same AVR but just with Dirac and HDMI 2.1 ports. It's advertised as a 9.2 channel receiver but the subwoofer outputs are not independent of each other like what you get on Denon AVRs, so it's the same signal split in two. Which means I can't eq my two subwoofers which means I need to get another device like a minidsp to eq them. There is no sign of Dirac Live Bass Control coming to this so if you have more than 1 sub this AVR may not be right for you. But if you are only ever going to be running one sub then it's no big deal. My other gripe is that it doesn't include some of the nice features that Denon includes like Dynamic EQ so unfortunately for me, I ended up returning the receiver and will look at swapping it for a Denon X3800H. Just feels that Denon is slightly ahead of the game here, but it's not to say the RZ50 is a bad receiver, it's not. If you can get away with the issues I have then you won't be disappointed.

Great mid range receiver with high end performance

Great receiver! Had been running a Onkyo nr-818 for close to a decade now and the time finally came for an upgrade. Been difficult finding this model in-stock but I jumped at it when the BB website said add to cart. Setup was a breeze, and the calibration results with Dirac were awesome. You need an internet connection and the Onkyo app installed on your smart phone to start the calibration. Otherwise you can use the still effective Audyssey setup. I plan on adding ATMOS speakers down the line however I’m enjoying being able to use my surround back speakers again. Video wise no complaints but I haven’t had a chance to try anything 4k as of yet. Running a BenQ 1080p projector, but the colors and overall picture looks great. I love that AirPlay 2 is built in so I don’t need to have my Apple TV to stream music. Hands down best receiver I’ve ever had. Can’t wait to get Atmos and a 4k project hooked up to it!

This RZ50 receiver replaced an older Onkyo Home Theater receiver, 22 yrs old. It still worked, but the display had all but quit and the audio, although good, lacked focus and clarity. The RZ50 was almost impossible to get. Every time I tried, out of stock. But I was persistent! After connecting the RZ50, I turned it on, configured the speakers and played what I considered the best recorded, produced and mastered CDs I have. I call these my "tuners." It sounded exceptional without running Dirac Live or even setting speaker level/distance correctly. So, I thought, not a bad investment. Then I found the secret. Dirac Live. Why? This application doesn't just eq or set levels or change time delay, it refocused the music and eliminated the room. It gives a clarity even if the listener is not in the center or in that sweet spot. It does this with practically any speakers. I am using restored Bose 901s, coupled to a restored Kenwood KR-7050 amp (both from 1979), no center channel, Klipsch Sub 10 and Boston Acoustics surrounds. This is as basic as one could get. I am only using surrounds plugged into the RZ50 receiver. Only 5 speakers in a small room not designed for home theater. Dirac Live calibrated the system and the audio now surrounds the listener, no matter where in the room. The room is "live." Sound is emanating from every. It is hard to tell where it comes from. The low end is rich from everywhere. It used to be in certain areas. Now it doesn't matter. That is simply not possible....or....is it? I am astounded. I bet it would be outrageous to have a theater set up with 11 speakers! But, I am still overjoyed with my current setup. If you were considering this receiver, for your room or theater set up, then buy it. If it can make my room come alive, it will make yours come alive as well.

Home theater installation takes 6months/10 visits

Best Buy wasn't able to figure out how to use it to give me Atmos. And now tell me I have to order a different receiver (the third one so far-- I ordered what they tell me I need for my installation which has been wrong over and over again). And also that ceiling speakers have to be removed and holes left in the ceiling and speakers placed in different locations. And that I'll have to pay to fix the holes left in the ceiling. My home theater installation will take at least six months and at least 10 visits to complete. And the first installer who was the installation manager never heard of protector hotspots or knew how to prevent them. The components were not turned on to see if they worked or were installed right. No updates were checked. Speaker distances were not entered. And probably 10 times I've scheduled to have someone tell me how it should be done right and I just get a call the day before that says they don't know yet and they cancel and never get back to me.

If you can find one, best receiver under 2k

This is a really hard item to get at the moment. I waited 6+ months to finally find one in stock at it MSRP from another store (i really wanted it to get from Best Buy for the points but after 6 months of waiting, they still don't have them in stock). Anyway on to the receiver; Great build quality and very easy to use. My favorite part is I can adjust the crossover for each speaker. Unlike the Pioneer VSX-LX505, where you can adjust the crossover but for just the Large setting (and then you only have Large or Small options for the speakers). This was the turn off with the Pioneer and why I got the Onkyo instead. Onkyo is also $100 less for basically the same AVR with a little more. For Movies: I have it in a 5.2.2 Atmos configuration and for movies it sounds amazing after DIRAC calibration! I guess my only issue is that, while it has 2 subwoofer outputs, they are not separate; instead it's more of an internal RCA-Y adapter. When calibrating you can only adjust 1 subwoofer. I had to get an SPL meter to manually adjust the second subwoofer. For music: If you have 8ohm and High Sensitive Speakers (say 91db or above) then the 120watts in Stereo\Pure mode is plenty of power. In fact, this receiver mated very well with my Klipsch RF82 towers -- nice warm clean sound even at very high volumes; enough bass where a Sub is not needed. HOWEVER, those Klipsch belong in another room, and I actually have my B&W 683 S2 towers connected to the Onkyo. These are low sensitive speakers and have low impedance drops from 8ohm to 3ohms, therefor are very hard to drive and need power. The TXRZ50 handled them fine and not much noticeable for movies. For music however, you can tell the Onkyo just didn't have enough juice to power the B&Ws to their full potential, even when BiAmp'd and in Pure mode. Therefor, I have an external power amp to drive my front stage. CONNECTION: Plenty of connections in the back, I have my XBOX ONE and UHD Player (Dolby Vision and HDR passes through without issues - just make sure you use 48Gbps HDMI cables). Bluetooth works great and stores multiple devices (you just need to connect and disconnect from the actual device and not the Onkyo). I have HDMI eARC connected to my Sony X95J. It works flawlessly, sony remote controls Onkyo volume fine and passes through Pause\Play\Next options to my blu-ray, however, every now and then the AVR will auto turn even when the TV is off (i assume this is the TVs fault when checking for auto updates). The receiver also does not get hot even at reference levels (I should add, I do have my front stage speakers connected to a separate amp, and my equipment is inside the BDI corridor entertainment center which has vents everywhere which that helps with the heat,). Overall this receiver packs so many things at just $1,300. There are no other receiver at this price that can compete.

Worth the extra money.

I was not disappointed. All specs were excellent. The user interface was a great improvement over the Denon, Onkyo and Yamaha receivers I have used recently. Tip: when moving from 2 to 4 height speakers the connection of back surround will change. The sound quality left nothing else to be desired, excellent. The preamp outs for all channels added flexibility for experimenting with external homemade speakers, equalizers and analog amps. Loved the DIRAC calibration which used the computing power of a cellphone. I will mention one other unique issue I had. I was using 2 passive subwoofers with my choice of full range stereo amps. I needed to add external equalizer as during some music environments I could hear noise (digital?). A regular powered subwoofer would not ... MoreI was not disappointed. All specs were excellent. Worth the upgrade

This is my 3rd onkyo receiver and by far the best one. Upgraded from the 6100 model. More channels and a richer sound experience. The distribution of sound emerces the room nicely. The voices sound crisp and clear while balancing the bass well. I would recommend this receiver and worth the money.
