The blades are made from Sandvik 12C27 modified stainless steel which is corrosion-resistant, doesn’t require any particular maintenance and provides excellent cutting quality. Beech is the most commonly used wood for the manufacture of Opinel handles. From France, their beech is hard, durable and easy to work. With a homogeneous appearance, its light colour varies from yellow to pink. It is characterised by the presence of numerous small dark dashes. Invented by Marcel Opinel in 1955, the Virobloc safety ring is fitted to all folding knives from the N° 06. Cut out of stainless steel, the Virobloc has two sections, one fixed and one sliding. In addition to locking the blade open (safety in use), it is now possible to lock the blade closed (safety in transport).

The Opinel No.8 is a classic. It's fantastic at what it does. It is small and very light in your pocket. The blade locks really solidly. The blade is very thin so this knife is an amazing slicer when sharpened. At this price its not super precious, so if it disappears for some reason, oh well, not the end of the world, buy another one. Therefore quite good on work sites etc.Being so thin bladed, it is not a strong carving or chopping blade. It is a slicer. Ideal for taking camping as folding cutlery. The knife is easily customised. Wooden handle is easily carved or oiled/stained. The carbon steel blade takes forced patinas wonderfully, it is easy to etch a design onto the blade if you feel creative. Or not. Suit yourself.

Perfect design. Super comfortable grip and lightweight. Ultra sharp. The value is so much higher than the price. I couldn't be happier. Opinel pocket knife is the best.

Carbon steel makes for a super sharp knife straight out of the package. If you read the one star reviews that mention a damp handle or rust, get some mineral oil at the drug store and soak the knife handle in it overnight. The wood will then be water resistant and resist swelling in damp conditions, as well as lubricating and preserving the blade.Mineral oil is non-toxic and food safe, so use it on your wooden cutting boards, wooden utensils, leather goods etc. It's a great knife, and I plan to use mine in my camp kitchen as a paring/chefs knife. Maybe I should have bought inox stainless, but that high carbon steel cried out to me. :)

Like many reviews here and all over the internet, there's no saying that this isn't the best budget-friendly pocket knife in the market. The simple locking collar and nail-nick opening are essentially the only two move areas of the knife and that's what makes it so hardy and loved throughout the years. The blade comes super thin and sharp, cutting all forms of paper very cleanly. The carbon steel blade makes for easy resharpening and honing. The one thing is that you have to actively be aware of the metal condition; being carbon steel, it'll tend to spot and rust easily. Then I lightly wipe the flats of the blade on a paper towel to get the excess of, leaving a superficial layer to coat and protect the blade.Great knife to get into the world of EDC'ing. I use this as my "gentleman's" knife, for when the day doesn't call for my other bulkier, more "tactical" looking blade.

Best pocket knife
30 June 2023

I bought this knife to replace my old Opinel. It is the best bang for your buck pocket knife. My last one was used for everything from slicing bread and sausage, cutting open packaged items to making tinder. The carbon steel is better than the stainless steel in my humble opinion as it can be resharpened or honed to a fine edge easier. The locking collar is very simple, elegant feature. If you need a pocket knife you can’t go wrong here!

Classic, and still good

If you are after a knife to use whilst bushwalking, and have no wish for the "tactical" or "survival" or other expensive appeals to ego, then the Opinel #8 stainless steel is what you want. It's light, got a useful sized blade, usefully shaped for cutting things to cook, impressively sharp. Mine packs inside my Trangia cooking pots. The bulk and shape of the handle and the locking ring make it easier and safer to use for meal preparation than a pocket knife. It can of course cut rope or fabric if required.

Functional, no plastic, sharp, light

I've had one of these wood-and-steel beauties for 20 years now. This is fundamentally a paring knife meant for food-processing and whittling. For day-tripping, picnicking, or for field-work lunch out of doors, it is the most functional and stylish design. The blade is the right size and shape for processing fruit and vegetables, slicing cheese and spreading. The blade lock is a great safety feature in such a lightweight knife. Unlike multitools, it plays well with peanut butter, etc. The quality of its steel is superior to any stainless knife, and sharpens to a keen edge — just get past the staining, which is purely cosmetic. This isn't for field-repairing your gear or doing rescues -- though the point of the knife will turn tiny screws and it will cut a heavy line ... MoreI've had one of these wood-and-steel beauties for 20 years now. It isn't the tool I would bring on a multi-day hiking trip or anywhere grams are counted. But for dining al fresco on a day-trip basis, there is nothing better. Finally, I love that the whole rig is ultimately biodegradable, unlike so many plastic-sided knives. If you forget it in a pristine place, nature will recycle it easily enough.

Like a temperamental French car

Opinel's are incredibly simple and beautiful.Their two step process to open and lock make them a pain in the rear. I've have a #8 that I've used and abused for years. The carbon blade hardly looks shiny (ok, so I neglected some oiling) and even broke the tip after it fell on a camping trip (with a file and lansky puck shaved back into a point). It fell from 3ft off the ground. And another time part of the wood chipped. Let's just say it doesn't score points for ruggedness.Does it cut well? I find as a carbon blade harder to sharpen than other blades I have, maybe it's just me, but I sharpen a lot of blades (SS and Carbon) and find this one weird. The back of the blade is a straight 90 degrees which makes it perfect to use with ferro rods for fire ... MoreOpinel's are incredibly simple and beautiful.Their two step process to open and lock make them a pain in the rear. Otherwise accept its potential limitations and avoid it or keep it to open letters.

I sold them and distribute them. But I return to Opinel on a regular basis, it is the one in my pocket unless I want to 'show-off' unless I want to use a knife as an axe or a saw.I still had my first Opinel until I learn that petty theft is something considered 'normal' in Vancouver BC.Cheers,A.
