The setup for the Orbi RBR863S was easy and straight forward. Using the app is mostly for initial setup but you will need to access the web interface for customized setting such as changing the Subnet (if desired), IP reservations, port configurations and wifi broadcast options. The interface is a little slower to respond then my previous Netgear R6300.I used ethernet backhaul since I was already setup to do so but it also worked fine using wireless backhaul. I have a 3 story 2400sqf. house and signals are good in most portions of the house and don't have any issues with throughput. I have many wifi devices which include switches, plugs, appliances, Echo's and a Thermostat. I have seen online where others have had this same issue so I believe it to be more of an issue with the device than the Orbi since I also had some problems over the last few months on my R6300.Ok, now for my only real complaint. At over $1K I think there should be built-in fine grained firewall options for parental and device controls without having to pay for a subscription based app that is lacking in configuration options. I find this to be just a money grab for continued revenue steam. I have a couple of internal services I run that use port forwarding and with all the port scanners out on the internet they obviously hit and get sent into the device. Thankfully they are secure connections which get rejected but would like to have the ability to block inbound IP's before they even hit my devices or have a list of approved IP's for the service. There are no options for that so you have to relay one the Orbi's "PAID" Security Interface. If it does find an attack, it merely states an attack was found an blocked but only shows you the IP and no info on what kind of attack it was.Overall I am pleased with the Orbi RBR960 and would recommend it. I am taking one star away due to the lack of built-in controls at this price point.

I tried factory resetting and opened a warranty case with Netgear to troubleshoot or replace, but after several weeks getting the same generic āreset the routerā, āre-sync the satelliteā, etc nonsense from Netgear, Iām ready to throw in the towel, because I donāt have the time for this BS. Based on the performance of the router and functioning satellite, I think the Orbi system is very solid when it works, but if you get a lemon, return it ASAP or you will get jacked around by Netgear and not get a replacement. The app and web-based admin portal are pretty weak, particularly if youāve had an Asus or other router with more advanced functionality. You can revoke network access for devices but canāt allow local access without internet access. All the parental controls and traffic monitoring require a subscription which is ridiculous. Itās fair to say that I made an ill-informed (and expensive) purchase, so I thought Iād write a review to prevent others from making the same mistake. If you just want to set it and forget and get great coverage, this is probably a good option, but if you have any issues during the initial setup, RETURN IT IMMEDIATELY. If you want some semblance of network control without paying for a subscription, find something else. And if you have to make a warranty claim, I hope you have better luck than me.

I have used the Amplifi Alien router and that is less expensive and seems to work just as well, with a much easier to use app. Also, for the price while it has a 10 gbs incoming connection the outgoing ethernet ports should probably be at lease 2.5 gbs.Am I satisfied, yes, it works well in my situation, but the setup with the app could be much better.

We are a tech-heavy house and while we have not fully adopted the āInternet of Thingsā, I do have around 35 devices connecting to the Internet. What makes it worse, is that both my wife and I work from home in the IT industry with constant Zoom/Teams meetings all day. Our setup provides the primary connection in our living room, which is on the far end of a 4000 square-foot home, with her office on the other end and mine in the basement. So to get the coverage we needed, I have tried the Nighthawk series with a wired backbone to extenders that still was not able to provide the proper speeds and stability that I have seen with this system. My setup provides a wired backbone from the main router to the first satellite and a second wire backbone to the basement office ...Ā MoreWe are a tech-heavy house and while we have not fully adopted the āInternet of Thingsā, I do have around 35 devices connecting to the Internet. So to get the coverage we needed, I have tried the Nighthawk series with a wired backbone to extenders that still was not able to provide the proper speeds and stability that I have seen with this system. My setup provides a wired backbone from the main router to the first satellite and a second wire backbone to the basement office switch. The third satellite has been set up beside my wifeās desk in which she has her work PC hardwired. We have noticed that using this connection we are hitting around 700 mb download speed off of our 1gb network in all locations (I do wonder if this would be faster if the processor within the router was stronger than a 1.4 GHz quad-core). So some drop rate is to be expected, but unlike our previous Nighthawk system, we no longer have DNS issues. The only disadvantage Iāve seen is that during the first week, it seemed a little slow to respond to the devices being connected. Each time a device was to re-connect there was a lag before it would set the internet would connect. But this has gone away and it is performing beyond my expectations.
4000sqft home, Netgear Nighthawk AX6000 router, 3 Asus AC3100 routers all used to boost wifi. Worked for couple years then started to drop and have difficulty connecting. Spoke w our internet provider and they suggested a mesh-type system since we receive their top tier connectivity package. Was skeptical but bought the AX4200 (on sale). First of all, this is the EASIEST system to set up...so much better than any other router. Took all of 20 minutes to set up the router and two satellites. That included setting up an account with Netgear. Plugged in the router and the satellites on the two floors of our home and everything connected perfectly. They have complained for years about slow connectivity and dropped signals. No more. Orbi has remedied our wifi issues and we are so thrilled! The app is easy and user-friendly. For the past 4 hours, I haven't heard one complaint and no signals have dropped or lagged. Very satisfied with this system!
I bought these with hopes they would give good coverage and good performance across the 2 stories and the basement of my house. Unfortunately, my hopes did not pan out.Setup for this was a bit of a pain. I set it up via the mobile app, and during the setup process, renamed the SSID (which was an option given in setup). After I did that, my phone wouldn't connect again and left the router in a totally weird, and unusable state (even with ethernet plugged in directly). I ended up having to reset all 3 of the units, and start over from scratch. This time, I didn't rename the SSID during setup and it finished successfully. I then renamed the SSID later, and that worked fine. I ended up having to reset all 3 of the units, and start over from scratch. This time, I didn't rename the SSID during setup and it finished successfully. I then renamed the SSID later, and that worked fine. Overall, setup was trickier than I would have hoped, and definitely more complicated than the other Netgear routers I had. I get it that there are 3 units to deal with, but it should never get into an unusable state like that. One drawback for me during setup was that it did not allow you to split your network by bands (e.g. 2Ghz vs 5Ghz). This was surprising since all other Netgear routers do this, and it made it a) impossible to segment the traffic of the IOT devices from the interactive devices, and b) made it impossible to set up some of my 2Ghz-only devices. Perhaps I could have disabled the 5Ghz radio during setup, but that would be a pain.As far as coverage goes, it was strong in all corners of my house, and I had full strength everywhere, which was great. And the throughput seemed decent overall bandwidth-wise.However, as soon as my household started using the network, I got complaints from everyone that it felt slow. My son, who plays multiplayer video games, said the ping time was very slow. My wife, who does office productivity work on her laptop (which was 5 feet away from the router) said it felt slow. I, who do lots of Zoom calls, felt it was ok, but it did feel like it wasn't running full strength either from what I was used to. Not terrible, but definitely sluggish. I rebooted all the units, but that didn't make any difference. For my house, I was 0/3 for some core usage, so I returned it after just a couple of days of usage. I am confident it wasn't just that I had something set up wrong, there definitely seemed to be an overall issue with these for my house.I ultimately replaced it with a Netgear Nighthawk RAXE500. Coverage in the corners of my house is a bit worse, but the speed is great, I got to split between 2Ghz and 5Ghz, and all of the latency issues are gone. Most of all, everyone is happy.
Problems during install necessitated a hard reset and start again. Was not able to get it working. Had a Best Buy tech come out - very friendly and helpful and we thought we found and fixed the problem. Two days later, it failed again. This time two calls to Netgear tech support and another hard reset and (hopefully) it's now good. If it keeps working, I think I'm going to be very pleased with it. I always use Netgear and generally pleased with them. Their support is patchy - two techs and one knew what he was doing. It's possible that installing it on a computer might have avoided the problems, both the Best Buy tech and the Netgear support agent had me use the computer to "fix" it, Netgear need to get their heads out of their rear ends and stop more-or-less ...Ā MoreProblems during install necessitated a hard reset and start again. My previous Orbi was getting quite old. I wanted better speed and coverage. This isn't the current top of the line with Netgear but it is what Netgear recommended for my conditions and considerably cheaper. I have a 1400 square foot home with a finished basement. The router gave me very good coverage everywhere in my home on it's own. 600 to 800mps average. One satellite extended good coverage with average of 600mps coverage to my patio and at least 50' into my backyard. I only got about 40mps in my outbuilding 35' behind the house which I believe is because of it's aluminum backed insulation board. I was concerned the signal was to weak to sync the other satellite. I have 7 items wired to the main router. 4 directly and 3 through a splitter and about 6 items regularly using wireless. All the speeds listed were wireless using my Iphone to run the speed tests. I have 1G service. I am quite satisfied with this purchase. Plus I got 15% of the purchase price back by recycling my old Orbi through Best Buy!
I have been using this mesh system for just over a week now and have been very satisfied so far. The installation and setup was very easy through the Orbi app - it took an hour or less to get the router and 2 satellites set up and working. I use a modem/router combo from ATT and disabled the built-in router (Wi-Fi) from ATT so as not to interfere with the Wi-Fi from the Orbi (so devices will only connect to the Orbi Wi-Fi signal).I mainly purchased this to increase coverage in the corners of a 3-story home. My modem is on the third floor, and I previously had little or no TV streaming signal on the first floor and garage televisions.
