(34 reviews)

The Peak Light 30 S from Ortovox is a slim and minimalist backpack that impresses with its lightweight design and functionality. The classic top-loader features a shorter back and a circumferential zipper that allows for quick and easy access to the main compartment. You’ll find storage options for small items in the two compartments in the lid, the map pocket, and the two pockets on the hip belt. The exterior of the backpack is equipped with numerous attachments for ropes, helmets, as well as skis and poles, which can be removed if needed for further weight optimization. Thermo-pressed wool has been used at the contact points on the back: the wool pads absorb moisture without making your back feel damp and dry quickly. The back plate and the lid compartment can also be removed if desired, providing even greater weight savings. The Peak Light impresses with its comfortable fit, minimalist design, and durability – the perfect alpine backpack!.

I'm a birder not an alpine climber, but my rucsac requirements are - I think - very similar. I need a large volume rucsac to carry all my kit - either in the rucsac or on it - for day trips that often involve a "walk in" to where I intend to go birding. Depending on the location, habitat, time of year and the weather, my rucsac may need to transport my telescope, tripod and tripod head, folding seat, food and drink, clothing options, walking sticks and - on the rare occasions when they're not around my neck - my binoculars! All this needs to be carried in a rucsac that is sufficiently robust and comfortable to handle heavy loads for most of a day in the field. So I was intrigued to find the Ortovox Peak 55L, which looked as though it would meet my needs. I've have now spent a day out with this rucsac and am very pleased to report that it is excellent. It is well made, strong, can carry a heavy load comfortably and has a wide range of internal and external storage/carrying options. Just what I need and it will undoubtedly become my go-to large volume birding rucsac. Thoroughly recommended...for whatever you need 55L rusac for.

2.5 Stars - usable, but ultimately disappointing

Pro:The styling is more like ordinary khakis, instead of the usual ridiculous look of technical pants that are swamped in pockets. This makes them perfectly suitable for a night out after a day of activity. The styling is a nice flat front, narrow legged look. The light nylon material air dries quickly, making them well suited to sink washes.Con:The fit is way off. I have a 33.5 waist, and size 34 in these pants hung off me like a tent. I reordered the 32, which was a perfect fit. When washed and dried according to instructions (cool wash, low heat dry) they shrank some. I've also noticed they retain food stains, and wrinkle badly out of the dryer. Finally, the detailing is poorly done. I've also noticed they retain food stains, and wrinkle badly out of the dryer. Finally, the detailing is poorly done. For example, the velcro “security” pockets on the back are useless, as the velcro patch is so small and ineffective it may as well not even be there. Also, the small phone pocket on the right leg is nice in that it is very discreet, but it is too small to accommodate an iPhone 5 or other slim smartphone. Only old fashioned compact phones will work.Bottom line:Decent travel pants for going from day time travel activities to a relatively nice night out, but the overall quality, fit and design are lacking, especially at the retail price. They served their purpose on an extended trip through Europe, but I wouldn’t buy them again.

Amazing!
12 March 2018

I use this pack for ski touring. I generally have trouble finding a pack that fits and as soon as I put this on it fit amazing. I've used it touring and it's really comfortable and I love having my safety stuff in the separate outside pocket. It skis great. I didn't feel it shifting at all. I even used this pack as a carry on when heading over to Norway for a ski trip and it worked great for that too. The zipper that goes all the way around the bag is great. I highly recommend this pack.

Best purchase of the year for me.
5 December 2022

So happy with this backpack! Very comfy, so much lighter than my older 32L bag from a different brand, great use of the compartment, one snack place on the hip is all I need, easy access is awesome with the full zipper. Just overall awesome!

Comfy and light backpack

Really good backpack, would 100% recommand it for multi (2-3) day trips. Only down side so far is no back pannel access and you have to put the back pannel on snow to use the easy access on the front of the backpack!

Excellent pack for longer ski tours
8 July 2019

Avalanche equipment fits well in the dedicated compartment (my shovel is on the small to medium size). Zippers are robust and easy to use with gloves on as are all the strap adjustments. Fits very comfortably. Ski toured on very warm spring days and noticed no sweat on my back. The material is also very robust and survived a few encounters with branches while skiing through tight trees. Weight of the pack is decent for all the features and the volume is accurate.

However the helmet cover pocket zipper is so cheap and flimsy. It's often getting jammed and I've been hiking; taken the pack off the pockets open with the zipper pulling apart and the mesh hanging out. Embarrassing.
