Osprey Ace 38 - Blue Hills
When its time to take your child on their first overnight backpacking trip, make sure they have Ospreys Ace 38. Although designed for youth ages 10 to 17, this pack has the same award-winning LightWire suspension as Ospreys adult models. The mesh back panel and shoulder harness and mesh hip belt ensure all-day comfort. The lid of this top-loading pack is fixed to keep weight to a minimum. There are two zippered compartments in the top lid to keep sundries organized. Two additional mesh side pockets and a front mesh pocket add more quick storage options. A separate sleeping bag compartment at the bottom of the main compartment provides security and compression for this bulky but critical item. Upper and lower side straps and a sewn daisy chain make this pack a truly trail worthy companion. And with the torso length adjustable up to 5, this pack will last your child for many years of outdoors adventure. Please note that children should not carry more than 15-20% of their body weight.

After much research, I chose the Osprey Ace for my children and have no regrets! A beautifully lightweight pack, built-in rain cover, lots of places to add bits and pieces and easy to access things in the bottom of the pack. Finally our kids enjoy carrying their gear, the adjustability of these packs means they fit just right for each individual child. Highly recommend!

I purchased this pack for one of my kids after buying the previous model for the other. There have been a few improvements on the previously model in-line with Atmos; things like a waist belt pocket, a simple yet handy addition, for example. It was unfortunate that the Ace 38 did not include the fit on the fly waist belt (when the 50 and 70 do), particularly as young kids come in all shapes and sizes. This has meant that hips suffer a bit as we couldn't get it tight enough (we got close), but it does seem to have improved since the previous model. It also sucked that the mesh zip pocket under the hood was also removed from this new model as it was a handy pocket. That said, I still gave it five stars as it carries wells and the adjustability is great (waist can be ... The owner of the pack had no complaints and was happy to walk for 5 hours with about 5-6kgs in it with no complaint (about the pack). I would buy this pack again without a second thought.

This backpack is really great. Of all the ones we tried out from other companies, only this osprey bag has all the features of an adult bag, especially when it comes to the suspension system. My kiddo is almost 9 and on the lowest setting of 3 adjustable heights and it easily fits all her stuff for our backcountry camping trips.

After researching other kid packs, I went with the Osprey Ace 38 for my 10 year old. Glad I didn’t go with the Ace 50 for size. The 38 is plenty big for over night trips and is very adjustable to fit her as she grows. The difference is night and day between this pack and the old Kelty external frame I grew up with.
We used the Ace 50 for a 4 day trek in the Chilean Andes. It is a great backpack, extremely confortable. The belt takes the weight away from your shoulders and the backpack is extremely resistant to rain and dirt. We are really satisfied with this article. The first of a long series....(This review was left for a previous version of this product.)
Fits my son well and has several nice features for options to carry water, he can’t wait to take it for a spin! Going to practice loading it up to find the best load out.
Another awesome pack from Osprey with a couple things I wish they would change. I am a little concerned about the adjustment as my son grows. Most Osprey packs have velcro to adjust the bag to any size needed, this bag has preset loops to move rods on. Its different and I’m hoping it will allow for the needed adjustments as my son grows. Also for a kids pack this thing is pretty heavy at 2.9lbs. Great quality as always from Osprey.
I purchased this for my 6 year old for our backcountry hiking trip. I love how adjustable it is. She loves it. I was able to compress it to the smallest size so that she can carry it and a few light items. However, I can see that it will last her all through her childhood as it can be made way bigger! So many cool and well thought out features.
I bought this backpack for a smaller framed 12 year old and it fits him well. This pack is extremely well made and has tons of features for a pretty reasonable cost. The 38 is the smallest in this line but it still has plenty of room for the amount of gear a child would be expected to carry on a 3-4 day trip. I plan on buying a second one for my 9 year old as well.
Our child is 8 and this pack will last her a few years. It’ll grow with her, which is so great (adjustable)! It has all the features we were looking for: room for a water bladder, snack pocket on hip belt (although no zipper), separate bottom zipper for quick tent/sleeping bag access.
