I really actually liked this backpack because I love my other osprey porter 40, so really osprey has been a favorite brand for me. This one is supposedly water resistant which is a big bonus for me, but I didn't test it out, so I can't speak on this. I seemingly am often caught in the rain so bonus for waterproof and water resistant products. So what else I liked about this backpack: the pockets on the backpack. Great minimalist climbing gym bag! At 13 liters it is really small, which is ideal for my purposes but keep in mind if it'll work for you. I ride my bike to the gym, and this bag is so much lighter than the cheapo bag I used before and breathes so much better. No more sweaty back when I get to the gymInside main compartment I've got harness, chalk bag, monkey tail length of rope for practicing clipping, and a U lock. Secondary compartment has snacks, rudimentary first aid supplies (nonstick pads, antibacterial ointment, climbers tape, lil scissors, bandaids, kurlex roll). Got the Daylite to replace an overly organized large commuter daypack from Gregory I used for work. I also purchased the Daylite Plus for comparison (and returned). I kept the Daylite. The Plus was too much volume for my needs. I donāt need a daily carry for a laptop. I have a 24L Osprey Tempest for long and winter hikes. The Daylite carries my lunch box (either a Built neoprene bag or PackIt Classic lunch box (10.35 x 4.26 x 8.26 in.), a few work papers or 9x 11 notebook, a book, keys, wallet , and a few small personal items. Iāve used this pack for a couple years now and have taken it on a ton of short day hikes (~6 miles typically) and itās held up really well! The quality is great, itās very comfortable and fits well (Iām a 5ā4ā woman), the straps are super easy to adjust. The ventilation is great and was one of the main reasons I was drawn to itā boy have I been glad to have this during our humid Georgia summers! Sometimes I hardly notice it when itās on. There arenāt a ton of compartments but I typically carry my belongings in smaller bags to stay organized, so I donāt find it to be an issue. I have an Osprey Ozone 46 that I use as my main carry-on item when I fly on a non-budget carrier or take longer trips. So I wanted a bag that I could complement that - the Ozone can go in the bin above the seats, and the DayLite plus can go beneath the seat in front. On my last trip, I brought a cheap foldable, packable backpack in my Ozone, and used that as my daybag on hikes and things. But after a week of daily use on some short hikes, it was starting to develop some rips and show some wear, so I wanted something that would last ā which brought me to Osprey. Iāve only used this for one trip, but it obviously still looks brand new, and Iām expecting it to be perfect for many years to come, like my other Osprey bags. And for the price of replacing my cheap foldable pack every 2 or 3 trips, I can buy one Osprey that will last me for life.I have to second some of the comments other reviewers have mentioned that the side water bottle pockets just arenāt deep enough. In the one weekend trip Iāve taken, my water bottle has already fallen out when I bent over to tie my shoe, causing the water bottle to get dented. I now loop the top of the water bottle through the compression strap above the water bottle holder, and that ensures it stays in place and wonāt fall out. So I'm deducting one star for the water bottle pocket.Also, my second biggest complaint is that the compression strap buckles on this bag and other Osprey packs are not standard sizes. Though they all look to be a similar size, the three main backpacks that I have: the Ozone 46, a Pandion 28, and this DayLite Plus are all slightly different sized buckles. I was hoping I could just snap the compression snaps from this bag into the Ozoneās and attach this smaller bag to the back of the larger backpack as I was walking around the airport, but that didnāt work. I was able to loop the compression straps from the DayLite Plus around the larger backpackās compression straps, so that the two bags were attached together; it just wasnāt as clean looking as if they buckles would have been the same and clipped together.

So factor in additional cost for a hydration bladder if you donāt want to stop and take the pack off every time you need water. I bought the Osprey Daylight as a dayhiking pack to finally enter the 21st Century, replacing my Jansport Superbreak I have used for this purpose for decades. I still wanted the Superbreak's simplicity, but also wanted something with a real sternum strap and external water bottle pockets, with ability to hold a hydration reservoir being a nice option, but not mandatory. I was worried about cutting the internal capacity in half going from the Superbreak to the Daylite, but moving the water bottles outside frees up a lot of internal space. I can keep two one-liter water bottles (even double-wall insulated stainless steel ones) in the side pockets; a full Patagonia Better Sweater fleece jacket (even though for most hikes I just have an REI Co-op vest which saves room), ...Ā MoreI bought the Osprey Daylight as a dayhiking pack to finally enter the 21st Century, replacing my Jansport Superbreak I have used for this purpose for decades. I still wanted the Superbreak's simplicity, but also wanted something with a real sternum strap and external water bottle pockets, with ability to hold a hydration reservoir being a nice option, but not mandatory. I was worried about cutting the internal capacity in half going from the Superbreak to the Daylite, but moving the water bottles outside frees up a lot of internal space. I can keep two one-liter water bottles (even double-wall insulated stainless steel ones) in the side pockets; a full Patagonia Better Sweater fleece jacket (even though for most hikes I just have an REI Co-op vest which saves room), a stashable Columbia rain jacket, and still have room for a sack lunch in the main pocket; an Adventure Medical Kit .3, Leatherman Squirt multitool, compass, map, little compact LED light, and space blanket, plus a couple of energy bars in front pocket. Certainly enough for most dayhikes. Downsides: it would be nice to have some lashing points on the outside to carry some gear externally, and also it's impossible to take out the water bottles when you're wearing the pack, the best you can do is unsling it from one shoulder, which is not ideal, but still doable while walking. But I guess if you have the internal hydration reservoir that takes care of drinking on the go. I haven't bought one of those yet, so don't know how that affects what you can carry in the main compartment.
I have been searching for a small/medium (smedium?) backpack for day hikes. I like to take my dog on 2-4 mile hikes and this is the perfect size for both our water bottles and all of her dog essentials. I go to the office once a week and this fits my 13 in laptop perfectly with enough space for my mouse, headset, and small belt bag. This bag will get lots of love and I love the color options!I tried this on in store before ordering the color I wanted and Iām a plus size 5ā7 and this fits my frame just fine. The chest strap has plenty of room. My one caveat is I can buckle the waste strap but its a lil snug and could use an extra 2-3 inches to be more inclusive. This daylite pack is much smaller so I was unsure it'd be adequate, but it's very efficient in size and function making it perfect for day hikes! It fit my 3L water bladder, a rain jacket, food, and other hiking essentials. Other reviews stated the chest strap sat high and close to their neck but with the right strap adjustment, the placement of the chest strap is perfect. I kept both straps buckled across my chest and stomach for a 15-mile hike in the Adirondacks and it sat tight to my back and was very comfortable. Planning on using it for a long bike trip this weekend too.
